Wintertime Playlist

by Dragonfreak (talk)

Hello readers! I hope you are enjoying your holiday break. And a great way to enjoy the break is to relax and listen to music. This time of year, I love listening to music from winter themed levels in video games. Even though winter is not my favorite season, winter music is fantastic, because it can be incredibly diverse. Winter can be anything from a happy, festive time of the year to a cold, barren, desolate land filled with snow and seemingly only snow. And music that relays these scenarios can both accurately describe winter based on the person or place. That is why I think winter can evoke more emotions than any other season.

To share the wonderful music of winter, I have made a Playlist on YouTube of what I think is the best winter songs in video games. I listened to about 125 songs and I picked the top 40 here

Here are the highlights of the Playlist:

Freezeezy Peak (Christmas) - Banjo-Kazooie: I have never played Banjo-Kazooie before (I don’t count Nuts & Bolts though), but I have listened to some of the games’ music and it is amazing. The Freezeezy Peak theme is no exception. I feel like everything good about winter can be expressed though this theme. Especially the Christmas version, which is unlocked once a certain task is completed. The Christmas version adds bells to the song, which makes this great music even better.

Snowman – Mother series (Super Smash Bros. Brawl version): To me, Snowman represents the beauty of winter. I can imagine myself walking down the street in freshly fallen snow, taking in the beautiful sights of winter. The music is incredibly calm and soothing. There are many versions of Snowman, but the Brawl version is the best, because it combines all the previous version, plus there is a very nice choir section at the beginning which gives me shivers every time I hear it.

Phendrana Drifts – Metroid Prime: The Phenedrana Drifts theme perfectly fits for those areas that act as a winter wasteland, where all you can see snow that is reminiscent of Antarctica, Siberia, Greenland, or the very northern parts of Canada. The music sounds empty and haunting, which winter can feel like that to some people (admittedly sometimes me).

Snowpeak Ruins and Blizzeta theme – The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: Snowpeak Ruins is one of my favorite temple/dungeons in all of the Zelda franchise. I love almost everything about it: the enemies, the bosses, the puzzles, the dungeon item, the overall uniqueness, and of course the music. The theme of Snowpeak Ruins has the similar feeling of Phendrana Drifts, but except it feels here that it is leading up to something. You can call it the calm before the storm. When I was playing the game for the first time, that is exactly how I felt about it. Then I got to the boss Blizzeta, and when that battle music started playing, I realized this was the storm of the entire dungeon. The Blizzeta theme is a great theme for the power of a blizzard. I love these two songs to death and I think they play really well with each other.

I hope you enjoy the playlist. Winter music in video games are amazing that can make any experience so much better.

Happy holidays!
