Opening Statement

HI EVERYBODY, and welcome to the January Issue! I'm your beloved Co-director, Tucayo. Now, let the nonsense begin!

By now you have probably noticed I like clichés, so I will start this section with one: By the time you read this, I will be long gone. Well, not exactly long gone, but I will have already retired. I did not want to leave before the term ended, but things usually don't go as planned; luckily for me, I'm leaving because of a great opportunity, so I hope that's a valid excuse for not doing the news this month.

Section of the Month

Hey, everyone! Sub-director Turboo here with the results for December's SOTM poll. We got a total of 41 votes this month, and also a 3-way tie for second with 3 equally great sections! Paper Yoshi (talk)'s Upcoming Games won first place, so congratulations to him! In this section, he describes the announced upcoming games in detail and includes a calendar at the bottom for reference. It's a good section, so you should check it out!

I'll be back for the Closing Statement, so have fun in the meantime!

The 'Shroom Spotlight

Shroom Spotlight Lakitu.png

Hello, everyone. This is YoshiKong, and I have a special announcement to make. In the coming weeks I intend to retire from the community, and regretfully this means I must give up my 'Shroom positions, as well as my wiki sysop duties. But more than anything, I wish that the Spotlight project will continue to be a regular section in the newspaper. Ever since the section was resurrected and revamped last April, it has attracted a surprisingly large amount of community input, and it has been a great experience to co-ordinate it. I'm turning over the manager position to two users who have both strongly contributed throughout the duration of the project, and have expressed their interest in becoming co-managers together: Yoshi876 (talk) and GBAToad (talk). I have confidence that you will both continue the Spotlight project to a very high standard. Thank you everyone, and all the best for the new year!

Directorial Address

Greetings, 'Shroom readers! I'm your Interviewer, previous Activities Director, and now 'Shroom Director, Superchao (talk)! I'm quite honored to be the Director for the 'Shroom in 2014 - while there may have been a lack of competition, I'm still appreciative of all those people who thought I was a good choice for running the entire paper this year.

Unlike last year, I don't really have any special plans for the director process, such as co-directing. I shall instead put up my staff roster for the coming year.

Fake News

Editorial

Hey, and welcome to the Fake News, and happy 2014! Looks like we're all still here. How surprising.

So, anyway, is it really 2014 already? Really? Already? 2014? Is it?

Yes, it is. Get over it.

We have quite a special section towards the end of this issue. As you may or may not be aware of, one of our directors, Tucayo (talk), has just gone off somewhere to do god-knows-what. And, what's worse, he's left me with this special section and I've got no clue what I'm meant to do with it. I'll just plonk it somewhere around Ask Paper Yoshi.

So, anyway, doesn't look like we're changing any of our staff around today, so I may as well get straight into the Section of the Month.

Fun Stuff

Director's Notes

By Smasher (talk)

Happy New Year everyone! Let's start by announcing the winner of December's Section of the Month. There was actually a three-way tie for first between Pyro (talk)'s Find the Differences, Megadardery (talk)'s Mind Bogglers, and Paper Yoshi (talk)'s Crossword, with six votes each.

There are several resignations this month. Tucayo (talk) resigned from Mystery Images, Paper Yoshi (talk) has resigned from Crossword, and Megadardery (talk) has left both of his sections. Tucayo and Paper Yoshi's final sections are below.

And finally, I'm resigning. This is my final issue as a member of the 'Shroom's staff. I wish the best of luck to my successor and the rest of the staff in the future.

Featured Character Artwork (Paper Yoshi (talk))

SMB Peach Calling for Help Artwork.png

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the January Issue of Featured Character Artwork!!

As many of you may have heard, Nintendo secretly released a new title for the Wii U in the Nintendo eShop during the last month, which literally surprised every Nintendo fan out there. It is none other than NES Remix, which features a series of challenges set in parts of classic NES games, such as Super Mario Bros or The Legend of Zelda.

Pipe Plaza

Director's Notes (Paper Yoshi (talk))

Hello, readers, and welcome to the first Pipe Plaza of 2014!! I'd like to thank everyone who supported us throughout 2013, and I wish you all the best this year!!

Unfortunately, 2014 starts with bad news for the Pipe Plaza team. YoshiKong (talk), our dedicated Community Report and Projects Seeking Contributors writer, has decided to retire from the community, and so this will be his last month as a Pipe Plaza writer. Thanks for all your hard work during those 14 months in the Pipe Plaza team, YoshiKong!! I wish you the best luck in your efforts outside the Mario Wiki community!!

Section of the Month

December's SotM poll got a measly 7 votes, so I urge you to vote for your favourite section in this month's poll!!

The December Section of the Month, with 3 votes (42.86% of the total), is...

...UPdate, for the first time ever!!!

Interview

Superchao

Hello, 'Shroom readers! For the first month of the new year, and my next streak of interviews and traditionally bad introductions, I'm interviewing Wiki Sysop and outgoing 'Shroom Spotlight Manager YoshiKong! I would say more but I kind of have to rush this one!

The Interview

Superchao: Hello, 'Shroom readers! As the first interview of the new year, I'm interrogating our outgoing Spotlight Manager, YoshiKong!
YoshiKong: Hello!
Superchao: Since 90% of your stuff to talk about has to do with the wiki, we might as well start on that subject. How'd you find it?
YoshiKong: Well I believe it was early September, 2011. One day I was playing Mario Party DS, and I was curious about all the unlockables. So as you would, I shot off a Google search and one of the first results was an article here.
YoshiKong: The article was "List of Collectibles from Mario Party DS".
YoshiKong: After finding the info I wanted, I began to look around the rest of the website, and I saw myself contributing to some of the article.

Brawl Tactics

Timmy

HHappy New Year to all you Brawlers! Timmy is back for this edition of Brawl Tactics, and this will be my fourth article being written here, as well as the first article of Brawl Tactics for the New Year! Like always, this'll be quite a long one!

Well, for this month... I'll cover a character once again! Who's the lucky character? It's the PSI Powered Youth who's been PK Rockin' in all 3 Smash games, and my true main, Ness!

Ness may not be easy to pick up at first due to his recovery, but he is a fantastic aerialist and has plenty of KO options. He's not bad at racking up damage either, he can actually heal from certain projectiles, has the ability to play serious mindgames with his PSI powers and he's got pretty good throws! However, not even my favorite character is perfect; just like every character. Let's look at his pros and cons, and again, I'll bold the best pros and the worst flaws he has.

Mario Calendar

Paper Yoshi

Hello, readers, and welcome to the January Issue of Mario Calendar!! Unlike December, not as many games have been released during January before, so this month's list is shorter than the previous one. So let's check all the Mario, Yoshi, DK and Wario games released during the first month of the calendar year:

Upcoming Games

Paper Yoshi

Hi there, and welcome once again to Upcoming Games!! As I said in the December Issue, despite having changed my bi-monthly schedule towards the end of 2013, I would still write for the January Issue, so here I am!

Unlike last month, there has been only one Nintendo Direct conference since the previous issue, but that doesn't make this section any less important. Let's see what Nintendo has in store for us this month!

Nintendo Direct 12.18.2013

The first Mario-related game discussed by Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, during the Nintendo Direct broadcast was Yoshi's New Island. Not much was shown aside from a game trailer and a Spring 2014 release date. Nintendo later announced, on January 10th, that Yoshi's New Island will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in North America on March 14th.

A History of Video Games

Chuck Ballymoo

Since this is the first month of the year, how about I delve into the history of the first video game in all of history. At least, that's what everyone thinks. That game would have to be the inimitable Pong, released in the arcades by Atari, the American video game company founded by a man named Nolan Bushnell.

The history of video games did not even seriously begin to be recorded until the early 90's. Perhaps that is why it is such a commonly believed legend that Pong is the first video game. Pong, as I'm sure you know, is the instantly recognizable monochrome Ping-Pong video game released for the arcades in late 1972. It had only two moveable graphics, which were two vertical white "paddles" (if you can even call them that, more like little squares) that moved up and down on either side of the screen. A ball, that was also square, (yes, a square ball... good grief) bounced off either one of them, depending on which side of the screen the ball was, over a white-dashed line that I guess was supposed to be the net, and you got that oh-so-recognizable pong sound, hence the eponym. The score was even kept in the upper right and left hand screen.

Mario Party: Island Tournament

After five months, a surprise final round, and plenty of votes, it's finally time to announce the results! There were 42 votes total this round.

Coming in dead last with zero votes is Cloud Climb from Mario Party Advance, a 1-player minigame, where the goal of the game is just that: climbing the clouds to reach the goal.

Snow Brawl from Mario Party 6 managed to get one vote. It's a 1-vs.-3 minigame where the goal is to freeze your opponents with snowballs before they can freeze you.

Tucky and SMB Discuss

Super Mario Bros. and Henry Tucayo Clay

Tucayo: HI, 'Shroom readers! I'm Tucayo, and I am here with none other than my partner-in-crime, Super Mario Bros., to bring you a very special joint section!
SMB: Hello everybody! I'm here with Tucayo. a!!
Tucayo: So, although this may seem like an interview, it is NOT. We will be casually discussing stuff about our history with the paper and more!
SMB: Yeah, just picture us sitting on those fancy couches wearing those robes and fez hats having a rousing discussion pertaining to ourselves!
SMB: We're not trying to steal Superchao's job here... Yet.
Tucayo: He won't know what hit him until we have him in our secret basement and we're the new interviewers!
Tucayo: Anyway. By the time this section is released, our term will have already ended - the third one for both of us. What could be our biggest takeaway from this past year?
SMB: That we both like the number three?

Closing Statement

Sub-Director's Notes

SMB died again before he could get the issue out, so I did it instead (credit to Superchao for the polls, he's a bro). Below are his last recorded words and effectively his will, and soon I fear I too will become a ghost and pass on from the 'Shroom.

Just kidding, I'm coming back this year. At least for now.

- Turboo (talk)

Closing Statement

I want to thank you all for the support that you have given us here at The 'Shroom. I have had a lot of fun Directing the paper for the past three years, and together with my friend Henry Tucayo Clay (talk) for the past year. It was always great seeing the new and interesting things the writers sent in every month and working with the other staff members to produce quality issues. I will not go on at length this time around since is is time for Superchao (talk) to shine, so I would like to wish him and his new staff the best for the upcoming year— he is a talented and dedicated member of the community who will be able to handle the publication well. I urge you to read his Directorial Address to see his plans for the months to come. Thank you, and be sure to read the next issue on February 15th, 2014.
