Opening Statement

HI, readers! I'm your multicultural Co-director, Tucayo, here to get it started with our eightieth issue.

Quite the catchy tune. Anyway, this month we have been really busy getting ready for our traditional Holiday Issue, but that doesn't mean we don't have news, here they are:

Section of the Month

HI, I'm your concise Co-director, Tucayo, here to present October's Main Team Section of the Month Award. I'll make it brief so you can enjoy the great issue we have for you. Last month's winner was none other than Chuck Ballymoo (talk), who in his last section gave us an interesting overview of Nintendo's last three home consoles, which hold special places for most of us.

Voting for this month ends one week before release!

The 'Shroom Spotlight

Shroom Spotlight Lakitu.png

Hey guys, and welcome to the November edition of The 'Shroom Spotlight! This monthly section of the newspaper is dedicated towards improving a selected group of articles on the wiki. Each of the four selected articles have a specific issue, such as requiring a rewrite or more images. Progress which is made throughout the month is reviewed in the next edition, and a new round of articles are selected. So as for last month, we had quite a lot of input from readers towards fulfilling our goals. The article Krow was initially lacking in images, but now boasts a decent amount of visual examples of the subject. Giga Bowser originally had an overly long Trivia section, but many of those points have now been incorporated into the main paragraphs of the article, and an acceptable three points of Trivia remains. Takashi Tezuka, which was a Stub article, is, well... still a stub. Ah well! Moving on, the poorly-written Pillow Fight article has now been completely rewritten for clarity. Thank you to all who contributed towards helping out with the Spotlight project! We have a new line-up as the Spotlight focus for this month, check them out below!

Fake News

Editorial

Hello, and welcome once again to the Fake News! It's November, in case you haven't noticed - in fact, we're already over halfway through November. How scary. Time flies when you're reading Fake News. Or not, if that works better. We here at the Fake News take self-deprecation in our stride. Well, I do. Not sure about the other guys.

Speaking of the other guys, Waluigi Pyro (talk) (writing the Travel Guide) was our Section of the Month winner for October with a grand total of 22 votes. Paper Yoshi (talk) and Ask P_Y were close behind with 13 votes, and Yoshi876 (talk)'s Obituaries were next with 7 votes.

Staff changes: I now have a staff. I hit people with it when they're late.

(of course this means I have to hit myself a lot)

Director's Notes (FunkyK38 (talk))

Hello, all! I hope life is treating you right! This month, check out ‘Featured Character Artwork’ for sure- a very familiar face in a very familiar game makes an appearance! As always, we are always looking for new artists! If you’d like to contribute, whether one-time or monthly, send me a PM or a message and we’ll sign you up! Let’s get to it, then!

Pipe Plaza

Director's Notes (Paper Yoshi (talk))

Hi, dear readers, and welcome to the November Issue of Pipe Plaza!! I guess I have no news about the Sub-Team itself, so let's keep on going to see the Section of the Month results!

Section of the Month

Last month's SotM poll got 11 votes for the third time in a row.

The October Section of the Month, with 5 votes (45.46%), is...

Community Report, for the second time overall, and twice in a row!!!

Community Report, written by YoshiKong (talk) from January to April as a guest writer, and since May as the official writer, brings news on what happened on the wiki in the previous month, listing any staff changes, and listing proposals that have reached a consensus, as well as the ongoing ones, for example.

Additionally, three sections got second place: Tip of the Month, written by FunkyK38 (talk), Projects Seeking Contributors, also written by YoshiKong, and Monthly Report, written by myself. They all got 2 votes (18.18% of the total).

And that's it for this month's notes!! I hope you like this issue!!

Critic Corner

Director's Notes

Palkia47 (talk)

Hi. I am your new Critic Corner director! So… hi! How you all doing?

October Section of the Month

Had a slightly higher voter turnout than last time, which is certainly nice! Congrats to MrConcreteDonkey (talk) (why did you people vote for such a horrible person…) for his Should Have Been section, which covered his opinion of what should’ve been in Nintendo Land. It was a very nice article, so well-deserved (not that NSM’s sections were bad, because they were both great as well!)

P.S. Anything bad I say about MCD is all in good fun, because he hates me too. :’)

Interview

Superchao

Hello, readers! I'm interviewing Mason, now known as Puddin, for this issue of the Shroom!

Puddin is known for a few things. He was a forum mod for about half a year, he's made multiple sprite comics (including one of the few successful one, The Three Musketeers), and is known for being generally active both here and at Userpedia.

...Eh, no one reads these anyway. Go read the interview!

Interview

Superchao: Hello, 'Shroom readers! For this next interview, I'm interrogating community regular Mason!
Puddin: Hello!
Puddin: (I go by Puddin now.)
Superchao: Okay, Puddin' it is!
Superchao: Let's jump right into the usual first question, since I don't have any new ideas! How did you find the MarioWiki and its community?

Brawl Tactics

Timmy

Hello Brawlers, welcome back to Brawl Tactics once again with me, Timmy! My third article being written here and I am rather surprised I have earned Section of the Month for Brawl Tactics the second time in a row now! Thanks for all the support, you guys!!

So my first article I covered a general tactic (which was on getting a KO). My second article I covered a character (on the lovely Princess Peach). This time, I'll cover a stage! Here, we're going to the beautiful town on Isle Delfino; Delfino Plaza! This is actually my favorite stage in the game!

Delfino Plaza is a stage that comes from Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo Gamecube from 2002. In this stage, most of your brawling takes place on a moving platform with a few more platforms (the small platforms change layout each time). All of these platforms can be passed through from below, but you cannot fall or duck through the main platform. The platform randomly goes to one of nine locations for a short while, then it'll return and move to the next location. This cycle repeats indefinitely!

Mario Calendar

Paper Yoshi

Hello, readers, and welcome to the November Issue of Mario Calendar!! Once again, I have no news regarding this section, but I did notice something quite interesting while writing this section: a Mario-related game has been released in every single day of November. Yes, all thirty of them. Anyway, let's all take a look at all the Mario, Yoshi, Wario and Donkey Kong games released sometime during the eleventh month of the year:

A History of Video Games

Chuck Ballymoo

Hello. This month I'm going to be discussing the history of bad translations in old school video games. I have often viewed the notion that the Japanese transpose their L's with their R's to be an overly magnified stereotype. But many of them do make this mistake, due to the night-and-day differences of Latin versus tonal languages. For an English speaker to become passably fluent in another Latin language such as Spanish or Italian, it on average requires two years of devoted study. But a tonal language, such as Japanese or Chinese, will require at least six years of such study to be able to converse with any degree of adequacy. The inverse then, for a translation from Japanese to English, is evenly true. The translation, or transration of video game or any at all text from Japanese to English is indeed most laborious. But sometimes, poor translations can lead to great things. When Miyamoto created his Donkey Kong 1981 arcade, he picked up an English/Japanese dictionary and through it concluded that everyone in America and the entire English-speaking world would immediately correlate the name Donkey Kong to mean Stubborn Ape.

Closing Statement

Salutations! Welcome to the November 2013 edition of The 'Shroom. I hope that everybody celebrating Thanksgiving this month has a great time this year. I know that I am thankful for everybody that makes this project possible– the readers, the writers, the 'Shroom staff, and the Super Mario Wiki community. I am also thankful to Crocodile Dippy (talk) (who has resigned after directing the Critic Corner for over a year) for his time with The 'Shroom, and to Palkia47 (talk) for joining us as the new Critic Corner Director. We look forward to working with him for the next few months.
