Fading Into Obscurity

Sea Side King
The King of Water Land in Kappa form.

Welcome to Issue L of Fading into Obsucurity! This issue I decided to talk about a character from the most special Mario game in history, or rather, seven characters: the Mushroom Kings!

These seven glorious characters ruled over the seven lands of the Mushroom Kingdom: Grass Land, Desert Hill, Sea Side, Big Island, The Sky, Iced Land and Pipe Maze. Very few of them are named, but I saw great promise for these seven when I first heard of them. They debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, where the main objective of the game was to rescue them from the clutches of some awesome other characters. Unfortunately, these monarchs did not reappear in the game’s remakes New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii (and don’t try to tell me that the Koopalings in a cake story was better than one involving the kings).

Four of the Kings have also appeared in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3 in four different episodes. These kings are the Sultan (Desert Hill), Prince Hugo (Giant Land), Emperor Ed (Sky Land) and King Windbag (Ice Land). This was the most recent appearance of the kings. With the release of many games since then, including sequels where they did not appear, the Kings have simply faded away; into obscurity.
