From the Mushroom Vaults: Easterly Eggses and Things that go OW in the Night!

This month, I’m offering a full-fledged walkthrough for the YIDS level “Yoshi’s Island Easter Eggs”, plus a couple of miscellaneous tips for DKC2 and DK:KS. Also, I’m introducing the Monthly Challenge section. Have fun!

“Gaze upon my knowledge!” ~ Cranky Kong

Easter? In March?

We know it probably took you forever to complete that annoying Yoshi’s Island DS, but Easter? Already?

Yoshi’s Island Easter Eggs is an annoying collection of extremely annoying tricks. Though you’re probably mastered most of them (Lakitu hijacking, anyone?) there’s still plenty to be learned… through trial and error. With this guide, though, it’ll even out the chances to mostly trial.

Egg #1: Yoshi Terrorists attack Civilian Lakitus!

Poor Lakitus. What have they done to deserve mauling and cloud-stealing of the first degree? They chuck Spiny eggs at Yoshi and attempt dive-bombing of the second degree, that’s what.

Simply leap atop the Lakitu while he whizzes about the room, trying to find a shot. Then into the spiky room, on the Lakitu’s cloud, you go! Grab the key to the right before going to the left. (A small note: Try not to land atop the platform the key is on, as this will cause the cloud to drift out from Yoshi’s feet, marooning him in spike land! Instead, grab the key by going through the platform from below.)

There’s Red Coins hidden in that patch of yellow coins in the corner, so snag them before unlocking the door.

I Can’t Believe It’s Not A Trampoline!

They’re floating, bloated, rotund, not fun, A-N-N-NOYING… the Bouncie room is one of the most annoying features of this level. If Yoshi watches his bounce, he can soar to extreme heights. But bounce off the wrong end of the pink blowhards, and Yoshi gets propelled into the depths.

There are red coins in the following areas: After two formations of coins, drop down a bit to find a formation of coins shaped like three “+” symbols. There’s a Red Coin in the middle! At the edge of the wall, the closest coin to the wall is a Red one in disguise. Leap off the ledge with the door and flutter through the nearest row of coins for one more Red Coin.

After reaching the door, Yoshi should flutter and Bouncie all the way to a Flower and a platform with a key to the door.

Crouching Shy Guy, Hidden Platforms

This one has straightforward items… but a really annoying gimmick. There’s a Shy Guy in the middle of the room, shielded from all Yoshi attacks by a brick wall, turning the platforms on and off! It takes awhile to get the rhythm… after wasting about 83 lives, though, you’re bound to get it. There’s a Flower in the bottom-right corner of the room; lock the aiming cursor down-right, then flutter across the room and snipe it when the platforms go off. Plus, the five-coin formation to the right of Shy Guy’s barrier conceals two red coins. With perfect timing, Yoshi must grab the key without being crushed by the platforms, then race to the left and unlock the door… which also sits precariously on a temporary platform!

Lemme On! Lemme On! My Turn! My Turn!

After the last “egg”, the solution to this one should be obvious. Slurp the Shy Guys, then, holding down Up on the D-Pad, spit them so they land on all four switches. Be sure to save one or two eggs to shoot the two Red Coins and the Winged Cloud above the pipe for the key first, though!

LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHTS OOOOOOOOOOOOOOUT!

Remember those dark, dank levels with torches? This “egg” takes that a bit further. Without the lights from stomping the ! Switches, the room goes entirely black, except for a halo of light around Yoshi! Plus, this little gimmick is a real <sarcasm>”help”</sarcasm> to item collection.

After hitting the third switch, take a ride on the platform for a Red Coin. Hit the switch again as soon as the lights go out. After bouncing for a Flower, flutter right until a switch is seen. Above it is a Red Coin. (Incidentally, after hitting this switch, one can bounce off it and, with extreme fluttering finesse, make it to the next platform with a switch without riding a precarious moving platform. Also, this allows easy access to the key and last Red Coin, which are located right by the highest switch!)

A Yoshi in a Foreign Spiky Land

By far the hardest of them all, this “egg” has Yoshi riding an egg-fueled platform across a deadly land of spikes. One misstep and Yoshi is a Kamek kebab.

To start, throw five eggs at the platform, but, when the platform nears a spiked weight, leap off. Grab the free eggs, and grab the Red Coin in the “+” shaped formation. Throw all remaining eggs at the handing weight, wait for it to rise, then flutter under and onto the nearest platform. Fill up with yolky ammo, throwing one at another “+” coin formation for another Red Coin. Once again, throw about five eggs at the platform, but this time, throw them very slowly. Chuck three eggs at the next weight and wait for it to come all the way up, fill up with the Egg Blocks, then fling enough eggs at the weight to allow Yoshi to pass under. HOW-EVER, when Yoshi passes under, the weight will be low enough to smash Yoshi’s eggs thrown at the platform. So, before passing under, throw as many eggs as possible to propel Yoshi from under the spiked thingamajig. Grab the eggs with Yoshi’s tongue to avoid losing the platform, then, once again, fling an egg at that formation there for one more Red Coin. Whew! By the way, save one egg to hit the Winged Cloud with for a key, or Yoshi has no way out but suicide.

Pimp my Arrow Wheel

This one features those hard-to-maneuver wheels…. upgraded with (finger quotes) invisible rocket engines! (/finger quotes) Fortunately, the items are obvious. Whenever a “+” formation of coins is seen, there’s a Red Coin in the middle. Plus, there’s a Flower that’s smack dab in a corner. Throw an egg at it to avoid a spiny end.

The door presents an interesting problem, as there’s no platform underneath it! Yoshi must use the wheel as a makeshift ledge to enter it.

Herbicidal Hero

Ever wish there was a chance to use Superstar Mario to the max? This “egg” grants that wish. However, there’s a catch. All Piranha Plants in this room must meet their doom before the large block blocking the entrance to the exit can be opened! Fortunately, there are only two Red Coins here; the last two top rows of coins before the exit conceal the two prizes. Oh, and grab the Flower too.

A winning strategy to win this level is to backtrack as much as possible. The Stars resupply themselves when Mario wanders off-screen, making an opportunity for unlimited super power! By the way, it wouldn’t hurt to supply an egg for the end, as the key for the door is stuck in a Winged Cloud. Woes betide those Yoshis that do not bring supplies. Tsk, tsk.

The Egg which is an Egg

Finally, there’s a real honest-to-crawfish Easter Egg in this level. Something in this level, that can be seen in every “egg”, that reduces itself every time Yoshi goes in a door, which appeared in the original Island, is found here. What is it? Let me know on my talk page if you figure it out!

Brambly Scrambly

OW! Those brambly levels of Donkey Kong Country 2 are one huge pain in... various places. But there is a way to bypass the pain of getting thorns imbedded in your rear. When using Squawks, the Kong’s underbellies become invincible. So you can land on briars without getting hurt! At least, in the GBA version you can. Research for the SNES version is currently in limbo due to the writer’s cheapskate parents not wanting to buy an SNES off eBay.

Right on the Sweet Spot

In Donkey Kong: King of Swing, when you hit an enemy/obstacle, you go flying back, right? This can be annoying. But it can also be the key to completing the most horribly horrendous level of the whole game (and that’s pretty bad). The Diddy Kong time trials are most likely the most annoying thing since the advent of faulty Wi-Fi connectors and dishonest eBay sellers. And the last level, the K. Kruizer engine, takes the grand scoop as THE most EVIL level in a peg-grabbing GBA adventure. That’s really bad. And, as you can guess, the Time Trial for the level doesn’t ease up one bit in toughness. But there is a way to cheat a little. When Diddy lands on top of a spiked ball, he flies into the air, much higher than even when he Goes Bananas. In the first area of the K. Kruizer Engine level, instead of slamming all the ? Barrels, you can just leap on top of the spiked balls to propel Diddy to the top of the area. After that, completing it should be EZ. Have fun beating the rest of it. Not.

Monthly Challenge: Race through the Galleon

This month’s challenge: See if you can beat the first three levels of Donkey Kong Country 2 in less than 30 seconds! If you are able to, PM your achievement to me on the forum or here on the Wiki, and I’ll list you as a winner both here and on my user page.

Have fun with your newfound knowledge! And for those of you who think that Waluigi is in SM64DS, or that Wario is in SM64, go jump in the lake.

Review: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

by Phoenix Rider

Scores out of 5, * = 1, + = 1/2. I.e. ***+ = 3.5/5

Hello again and welcome to the Review Corner of the ‘Shroom! I’m Monty Mole, and this month’s review is for Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the DS sequel to the acclaimed Superstar Saga. Let’s get right down to the nitty-gritty, shall we?

Gameplay- ****+

Superb. Not much else to say there. The storyline is very involved, even for an RPG. This game puts you right in the middle, exploring the overworld, solving puzzles to proceed, battling enemies for experience, which in turn levels up your stats so you don’t get beat to an embarrassing puddle by the stronger enemies later in the game. The RPG elements are all here.

A great addition is the inclusion of the baby Mario Bros. Sometimes they’ll have to solve puzzles and battle enemies on their own, without the older Bros. help, adding a new dimension in gameplay, because the babies have some moves they can’t use when traveling with the adults, and vice versa.

Battling sometimes feels like a chore, but there are enough varieties and choices you can take so it doesn’t get too monotonous. Supplies are generally easy to come by, more so than in Superstar Saga, because you’re not always strapped for Syrups. Money never seems to become an issue, as the many battles and item blocks literally throw coins at you.

The only thing is, the gameplay ideas aren’t as innovative as they were in Superstar Saga. Perhaps this is because sequels are generally compared to their predecessors, but in this case, there are some dragged-out spots. *coughThwompVolcanocough* Still, supremely good.

Sound- ****

The background music in this game is pretty memorable, from the instantly-recognizable Peach’s Castle theme, to the spooky/sad theme of Toad Town, to the spacey Star Shrine music. It’s enjoyable, even if some loop a little more than necessary.

The theme that plays during battles leaves something to be desired, though. It’s similar to the Superstar Saga theme, only played in a minor key. Kinda grating after a while. Still, it’s not that bad, and you get used to it.

Graphics- ***

OK, OK, so it’s no Galaxy. But it does keep more or less the same graphical style as its predecessor (does Luigi’s nose seem the size of a watermelon to you?). Anyway, the characters are drawn well, and the different varieties of Shroobs are distinguished quite nicely. Some might say they’re just palette swaps, but there is at least variety.

The landscaping, for a 2D-ish environment is very detailed. Little nuances such as flowers twitching, bolts in a metal flooring, etc. all come together in the environment. Of course, the big things just add to the atmosphere of the particular environment, such as the broken windows and dilapidated roofs in Toad Town or the Toad souls flowing through the pipes in the Vim Factory. On the other hand, while some spots are detailed, others aren’t very much so at all. But for a 2D adventure, graphics don’t disappoint…much.

Replay Value- ***

Well, it’s an RPG, but a good one. You might want to go through it again. Or you might not. Still, it’s a pretty fun game to play.

Overall- ****

Nice solid choice. Fun, almost as good as Superstar Saga. Nice pacing, lots of funny moments. You can customize Badges and clothes to your liking, something the Mario RPGs have been very good with so far. There’s a certain je nais sais quois that Superstar Saga had that Partners in Time doesn’t, but that doesn’t stop it from being an excellent game. I highly recommend it.

In the end, Mario finds himself transported to Flipside, an interdimensional place where he must search for Pure Hearts to counteract Count Bleck’s sinister Chaos Hearts.

To aid Mario in his quest are the Pixls, small creatures who bestow powers to Mario, such as making the surrounding environment 3-D.

That’s all for now, hope you enjoy Super Paper Mario, which is being released in only a few days!

Listen Up!

Wow. I received a lot email regarding that last issue. Yup. I got two. Take a look while I cry.

Dear HK,

Well, you wanted e-mails, so here ya go. I think the whole wrist strap controversy and lawsuit are pretty idiotic. I have had my Wii for months now and the wristband has worked perfectly. The problem is, some gamers don't use the Wii Remote as they should. They hold the remote by the strap (instead of placing the strap around their wrist) and spin the device really fast. This activates the motion sensor, which creates various actions in the game. Of course, the wrist strap was not designed for such use, and they break. It's not Nintendo's fault; it's the fault of dumb gamers. If you play as you are supposed to play as given by in-game descriptions, you will have no trouble with your Wii or your wristband (in fact, if used correctly, the wristband will probably prevent you from dropping your Wii Remote!).

-Son of Suns

Hmph. Trying to make me look dumb, eh? Well, it won’t work. Just kidding. It worked. Quite well, I’d say. I generally usually tend blame the whole thing on stupidity myself. But I blame a lot on stupidity. Like people not joining PipeProject:Toad. Now that’s just stupid.
-The ever-stupid HK

Dear HK,

I found your editorial simply enthralling. You never cease to amaze me in amazing ways I never thought possible. I had never been so engrossed in any piece of literature of any sort as I was with yours.

-Name withheld by request

I’m overjoyed at receiving this uplifting accolade from someone of your social standings. I never would have guessed you were one to frequent the Mario Wiki. I will keep in touch.
-The Honoured HK (note from Director: yes, that second email was fake. :D)

As most of you know, I’m a real stickler when it comes to sources. Well, there’s a reason. Now Listen Up:
It’s easy, especially if you do it right. I hope that my shoddy presentation helps. It’s on a very small scale, so, sorry about. Mira aqui (Look here):

Bad: "Wartortle is a blue turtle."
No sources were cited.
Okay: "Wartortle is a blue turtle." Then at the bottom of the article: "Sources:Pokemon Red, Blue, blah, blah…"
Mhm. Next.
Better: "In the Pokemon series, Wartortle is a blue turtle."

See the differences? The second is the most obvious, and at first look, efficient, but the third… Its just as efficient and… its clever. Its EASIER. Its legal. Its safe. Just do it. In the end, it just might save a heap of trouble, it makes the site look good, more informational in some cases…. I’m going on rampage pretty soon if some things don’t change. Now where’d I leave that template?

Oh, PipeProject:Toad. Remember!

"Mada Mada Dane."
-Echizen Ryoma

Merchandise Review: The Super Mario Bros. Super Show Boxset

What Mario fan who grew up in the 80s/early 90s doesn't remember the Super Mario Bros. Super Show? No matter how cheesey, ill-conceived, or completely off the plot of the games the show was, it had all our favorite characters and we loved it.

Which is why I think most of us will be very pleased with the complete series, in the form of two boxsets packaged by SHOUT! Factory, containing not only every episode from the series(Including the live action segments), but the following extras:

SET 1

  • An interview with Captain Lou Albano, who played Mario during both the live segments and the cartoon.
  • Original storyboards of the title sequence
  • Original storyboards of the "pattycake" routine.
  • Original background art galleries.

SET 2

  • Interactive tour of the Mario Bros. Plumbing live action set.
  • Short film on Captain Lou's autograph appearance for boxset 1.
  • Original background art galleries.

Additionally, in the first time since their original TV airings, the previews for upcoming Zelda episodes are preserved in the live action segments.

Sounds like they got everything, right? Unfortunately, no. The 80s tunes that appeared in each episode back when the show was on TV have all been removed due to copyright limitations, instead replaced with instrumental versions of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 songs. This is the only setback, and if you can get past that, it's an enjoyable collection that no Mario fan should miss!

I rate the Super Mario Bros. Super Show DVD collection with a 9/10. Go buy it whenever you can!

Entertainment

by RAP.pngRAP...

Hello, welcome to my section AKA Entertainment Section, names RAP... Here I review some of the fantastic SWFs or clips from fans who make stories above from the infinite database! Let’s hit the road and start the reviews!!!!

Supah Mario Dy Es

This SWF whatever file is created by RogerregoRRoger who was a member in Newgrounds. The story goes off as usually like in Super Mario 64 DS; but with a funny twist so crazy you might laugh. It goes as the Mario brothers received an email from Princess Peach; usually it says about a new castle and bringing your friends (or foes!) and blahatyblahblah… and when they arrived; Princess Peach shows them around the castle, at the end of the tour; Bowser came along to kidnap the Princess. Worst of all, he trapped all the characters in this castle; except Yoshi about to free the group. The group goes into random painting to collect Power Stars to restore the castle and save Peach. Meanwhile, Bowser finally talked to Peach about something after the kidnapping; shockingly, Peach has to bodyguard Bowser Jr. because Bowser replaced the Koopalings. Despite that, the Koopalings came and tried to get the hands on Jr. After that was over, Bowser uses her as bait as he keeps Peach. Back at the group, they are so sad; they talked to Toadsworth about the problem and they suddenly played mini-games, forgetting about Princess Peach. At the rest of Bowser’s time, he guarded Peach and wait for Mario to get Peach. And then Bowser is slowly getting bored… No wonder he’s stupid with her… As such, the graphics are usually average; some worst like Bowser and some good as such; you’ll get the hang around it… The jokes that the storywriter put are surprisely funny especially the NPC joke… If you want to watch some crazy story with some crazy setting when you’re obviously bored here for some reason... Go... Here!

The Real Luigi’s Mansion

So that’s it, a new mansion for Luigi to scare so easy?! Anyway, this one is created by some guy named Dan-Dark again a member in Newgrounds. This time the ghosts will goof off too much where they make trouble with Luigi here. This is like some comedy movie people like, but this is a laugh with the ghosts and Luigi. Unfortunately, the clip has no plot or storyline since the jokes can randomly pop-up from nowhere as you speak… And you laugh as anyways... The graphics are somewhat good; due to the fact it has sprites and have drawings in it made in MS Paint... SO if you want to laugh so hard and like ghosts... Go... Here!!!

New ACTIVE Users

Yet another 193 users joined the crew in March. Here's the low-down of those that made a difference this month.

News

A few noticeable tidbits this month. First to come, in regards to administrating promotions, the writer of this article was promoted to bureaucrathood, the only besides Steve. This user in turn decided we needed a 11th sysop and promoted Yoshi626 (talk), a very active user. There have been no changes since and no planned changes for awhile. Remember that both sysops & bureaucrats are both equal to users in terms of editing. Additionally, Steve is off the wiki for 10 days for Spring Break.

Next up: UnMarioWiki, another Wikia successfully created by MarioWiki users. If you need a break from our "factual and strict" setting, they've got some crazy things to read on there, including a fun choose-your-own-path "The Game". We are not officially affiliates with them, but check it out anyways if you haven't already.

Though not officially news, look out for a boost in article edits with the release of Super Paper Mario. More items, areas, characters, bosses, and everything you could expect from a Paper Mario installment. If you've spoiled yourself like I had, you've found out some interesting things already... ;)

Finally...MarioWiki:Anniversary is now created. It took me about 15 days after Issue III to create it, when I said the link would only be red when Issue III was "hot off the press". Oops. 9 members made it to the first committee meeting (above expectations) and we're looking for more last-comers next meeting. You must join the committee by April 21st, the day of the 2nd meeting, if you're interested.

  • Booster – apparently the developers also looked at the bottom of their mail as well. For his Smash Move, Booster uses his magic train set to attack other players while being invincible himself.
  • 9-Volt – 9-Volt will basically be a clone of Pikachu. They will share movesets and speed. 9-Volt can use his skateboard to attack the others.

The secret of the Dryites has been revealed. They say they are not in fact real Toads, but Shroobs. Mr. Joke, a Dryite has stated this. Strangely, him and his accomplices were giggling the whole time he was telling the story of the Dryites. Must have been a Shroob thing. The police team later detained them for questioning and they said they were joking. We should have seen that coming. Either way, we're keeping a close eye on them.

Car Crash

Yoshi holding Mario's Cap artwork from Super Mario 64 DS.
Wayoshi taking his cap off for the last time.

Wayoshi (age 15) died today in a tragic car crash. The other driver wasn't looking where he was driving. The driver was none other than Donkey Kong. He made some sad grunting noises, so the police let him off with the charge of 10 Golden Bananas. Wayoshi's funeral will be held at the Princess Peach's Castle Dungeon. The MarioWiki users couldn't chip in enough money for a funeral reception. Oh well. The real question is: What was Wayoshi doing driving a car at 15?

Strikin' it Rich

Lumpy in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
The slumpy Lumpy, get it?

Lumpy (age 26) struck it rich today by finding oil in the fields of the Dry Dry Desert. He kept a short jounal of his adventure.

Day X0

I was wandering around the desert, looking for oil. You see, I was doing it for my kids and I'll tell you later. This isn't the time. Anyway, I bumped into this talking tornado. It told me to dig around some ruins. I went and I did what it said. It even gave me a ride. After a lot of digging, I thought it was lying. But at that moment I had hit black gold!

After he found the oil, he legally had to pay Mario back for the 100 coin investment. In interest, he had to pay three times as much. Ironically, that was all the money he made for the oil. Maybe he should have gotten more oil. Now what will poor Lumpy do?

Tussle

The scene before the fight.

The crowd at Glitz Pit (various ages) had a tussel today. The crowd went wild when the Great Gonzales and Rawk Hawk were climbing the stairs to have their match. A bunch of rowdy Doogans and Lakitus had a disagreement on who was going to win. A Doogan swung at a Lakitu and instead hit an innocent Toad, the situation escalated. Great Gonzales and Rawk Hawk were too immersed in their battle to notice the fight. The fight was a rain of mallets, Spinies, and fire. Luckily, the Glitz Pit security team had the situation under control.

Editor's Notes

by the Director

And so here we are again with another successful edition of the 'Shroom, with 11 articles this month, including 2 new writers, RAP & ChrisAlassal. Sadly, combined virus problems and extracurricular activities left WarioLoaf (talk) unable to write his 'Shroom Fake News section this month. The article count hopefully will then go up to 12 or even more next month.

I know I said April 7th was the due date, but I had to push it back 2 days (curse the life of divorced parents...sometimes you don't know your schedule). Thanks to all others for still getting their articles in on time. Issue V's deadline (100% this time) is Saturday May 12th.

Like last issue, I leave a link to MarioWiki:Anniversary again in this section, so that all of our active contributors are aware of the event. Heads up for writers: I am planning a special issue that has just the complete results, including exact votes for each nominee of every award, in August and just my chart of monthly statistics instead of what would be Issue VIII, giving you guys a month off from writing and leaves your focus on writing award presentations (more on that later).

Now for the 4th time, thanks for reading!

Wayoshi, Director of The 'Shroom
