FTMV #3: Yoshi and Mario: Items are Fun ANNOYING!

Two things in the world of Mario are for sure: The two hardest levels in Yoshi’s Island are “Items are fun” and the hardest Red Coin Star in Super Mario 64 DS is in Bowser’s Sky. Fortunately, 3D has the answers. So fire up the GBA/DS/N64 and get ready to bust these two annoying levels!

Items are FUN! (not)

Badum DUM! This level is extremely enigmatic: You can do it the WRONG way and make it the SHORTEST Yoshi’s Isle level ever, or go the RIGHT way and get it to last forever. But which way is the right way? This section will show you how to get on the right track, and grab a few extra bonuses. To start out, grab the juicy melon and spit those Tap-Taps out of the way! Then exit to the next area. Fill up with Huffin’ Puffins; scoot to the right and HEY PRESTO! Goal Ring! But wait... there must be a catch. There is. Go figure. Hop in the nearby pipe to get to the “real” level. Now, I bet you might’ve gone in the pipe before, but gotten scared off by all the complicated-ness in the underground. No need to be freaked out. Head to the right side of the room with some Puffins in your arsenal, but stop at the end of the ledge. Flower above ya, right? But the flippers are blocking it! No matter. Fling a Puffin north-west to scoop up the flower as it boomerangs back. Handy, eh? Now hit the P Switch. WAIT! What’s all this? One platform is blocking another! Wait until the platforms are about to disappear, then bounce and flutter to the solid ledge, hit another switch, then race to the pipe. DON’T GO IN! Bet you did already. ;D If you did, go ahead and flip to the next paragraph. But for those who were patient, WHEE! Above the pipe, there are prizes in a Winged Cloud! When the Stars are gone, flutter to a ledge on the far left. Skedaddle to the end, the hop in the pipe. Now, this is a very interesting area. The Winged Clouds all hold 1-Ups, so shoot them down! But the Bandits, when shot, will give off 1-Ups, too! Just bazooka-mouth them until they spit extra lives. Sweet. When you’re done, fall through the coins (one red) then zip to the P-Switch on the right and hop in the pipe (after going through the procedure aforementioned about the switch, of course.)

Oh-HO! I’ll bet you hopped in the pipe too early and skipped here, did you? DID YOU? Really? You came here after getting all the bonuses? Well, “bully” for you. Bounce on the ball to get to the top of a pile of dirt. Yay. Inside the mound, there should be a Winged Cloud. Shoot it for a door. Now, this should be EASY! Just hop in the door; in the next room, enter the door on the ledge. Now, I’ll leave you to sort out to rest of the level, but there’s a big secret in the dirt-filled room. If you get into the door when it’s on the dirt, you enter an area. If you hit the P-Switch and shoot the dirt under the door, making it land on the ! Blocks, you enter ANOTHER area. And if you get the door to land on the ground at the bottom of the room, you gain access to the last area. One other hint: In one area, there are two Tap-Taps and an Ice Melon near a cliff. Freeze the bouncing metal beasties; then bounce off them to enter a secret area! Cool Cold! With this info, getting 100% on the level should be a breeze.

Red Coins in the Sky!

Bowser’s Sky. Intimidating, ain’t it? Fortunately, the red coins are in quite accessible places, and won’t send Mario on any annoying side-quests. For the first, push the block near the purple platform to the end of the ledge, the jump for the coin. The second is very obvious, grab it after the rotating purple platform with an Amp. Fall to the ground from the seesaw right afterward, then gently grab the coin on the right ledge; there’s a trail of yellow coins leading to it. On the rotating checked platforms, backflip to the above ledge to bypass a very dangerous route. Hit the switch, then leap up the stairs. At the top of the metal prepice, leap for the next reddie. Hop on the moving platform and adjust the camera angle, then double-jump for another red coin! Behind the point on the middle of the rotating platform, another can be found. So far, six coins! Climb the pole, then long-jump off the retracting platform to another pole. Handstand on it for the seventh coin. Scoot up the rest of the ledge, then leap onto the rotating platforms again. Wait for them to take Mario up to their top of their revolution, then jump to another set of platforms. Leap off them at the right time to grab another ledge. On the granite platform, the wind is blowing up a storm! Hide behind a pillar for safety. Leap up to the grassy area with the pipe. But wait! There’s still a coin to go! Jump back to the bridge, then drop under it for the last coin. Whew! That’s that! The star will appear by the pipe, grab it before the big boss battle. Good luck!

So that’s that. Umm... Expecting anything more? Well, there isn’t. What’re you hanging around for? Expecting to find extra hints? OK, here’s one: “L IS NOT THE ANSWER!” Now get going already.

Review: Mario Party 7

by Phoenix Rider

Reminder: * represents 1 star, + a 1/2 of a star. Ratings are out of 5.

Monty Mole here again, your faithful reviewer for games of Mario’s past and present. For the month of March, I’ll be reviewing the latest-released Mario Party for the Nintendo Gamecube. While we wait for Mario Party 8, here’s my opinion of Mario Party 7.

Gameplay- *

This being Mario Party, there are no real story elements. That in itself is not a problem. However, this Mario Party sets itself apart from other Mario Parties in its style of execution.

Following the trend from Mario Party 6, the standard 20-Coins-to-a-Star rule has all but been thrown out the window, as just one board incorporates it. That’s one strike. The other boards all have some other quirky way to get Stars, such as riding Chain Chomps to steal stars from opponents (an idea already used in Mario Party 6; that’s two strikes). Also, some are even luck-based, such as having three chests, but only one contains the star. This method was used in Mario Party 3, but here it’s taken to an even more extreme level. Also, the computer AI is as dumb as ever in this incarnation, with the “Normal” AI hardly being so, and only “Brutal” even crossing the threshold of normal human behavior. Although the game is directed to a younger audience, surely even they would not make the same mistakes the computers do. Strike three and this Party is out.

The only saving grace is the mini-games. However, many, almost half, of the mini-games are based on pure luck, and of those precious few that aren’t, they’re usually over too quickly, making them seem more fitted for a WarioWare game.

A “strike four” for this is the inclusion of six Bonus Stars instead of the usual three. However, only three of the six are given out, further raising the amount of luck needed.

Sound- **

The Mario Parties just wouldn’t be the same without the background music, would it? Imagine playing those mini-games in complete silence, and it would get boring fast. While Mario Party 7 does deliver the standard mini-game jingles and music themed for each of the boards, it’s lacking somewhat. After playing about 10 or 15 mini-games, all of which have pretty much the same tune, you’ll probably start to wish it WAS in silence. The boards’ music selections are OK, but nothing too outstanding. The Neon Heights board has arguably one of the coolest background music selections in any Mario Party, however. It alone saves the Sound section from an even lower grade.

Graphics- ***+

No doubt the best part of the game. More animated than Mario Party 4, not as kiddy as Mario Party 5. The boards are more three-dimensional than ever before and the mini-games have plenty of extra background goodies if one pays close enough attention. Indeed, it’s a shame that more of the work put into the graphics wasn’t put into the actual game, as Mario Party 7 has a lot of eye-candy to offer. Even something as simple as throwing an Orb looks cool. The boards themselves are chock-full of graphic avant-garde. Sand billowing in clouds in Pyramid Park, and the flashing lights and signs of Neon Heights. Graphics are at a high point for the Mario Party series.

Replay Value- *+

I suppose you’ll at least want to play it enough to unlock all the mini-games. Perhaps even buy out the Shop if you’re really into it. But sadly, this game lacks the charm that makes you want to come back to it, mostly due to the over-simplified games and the tacked-on extras. You’ll be going through your games one day, find it, say “Oh, this game again.” and promptly throw it back without another thought.

Overall- *+

Four words: Not worth the money. Four more words: Worst in the series. This game seriously lacks the charm and appeal of earlier Mario Party games, especially those on the N64. Take the Duel Boards of Mario Party 3. Fun, entertaining, a new idea executed in a good way. Take the Lottery Shop of Mario Party 4. Same deal. Take Mario Party 7 as a whole. Changing the rules that have worked for five past Parties, dumbing down the computers even more (which should in no way be humanly possible), and turning the mini-games, which should be fun and exciting, into boring, slapped-together WarioWare-esque ideas makes for one Party not to remember. Nothing against the WarioWare games, but Mario Party needs a bit more depth to it.

The Mario Party series has always been about skill with a little bit of luck involved. Mario Party 7 inverts that formula. The game will continue to frustrate all but the most hardcore Mario Party fan willing to overlook all these flaws. For the rest of us, our only hope is that Mario Party 8 will bring the series out of the ditch that the last two Parties have dug and back to the glory days of the originals.

Upcoming Games

by Sir Grodus

Banjo-Kazooie 3

The as-of-yet-to-be officially named latest instalment in the Banjo-Kazooie series, so far not much is known about this game; Banjo, Kazooie, Gruntilda and Jolly Roger have been shown to be returning characters.

Other returning features include Isle O' Hags and Jiggies. A variety of new attacks and moves have also been shown to be in the game.

DK Bongo Blast

A racing game for the Wii, DK Bongo Blast will be starring several Donkey Kong series favorites such Donkey, Diddy, Dixie, Tiny, Funky, King K. Rool, Kritter and what looks like a Krumple.

The unique feature of this game is, that instead of vehicles, characters will be using rocket-powered barrels to race. The game has also been confirmed to be compatible with the DK Bongos.

DK: King of Swing DS

The sequel to DK: King of Swing, not much has been revealed about this game so far, except that it will have a multiplayer mode and Donkey, Diddy, Dixie and Funky Kong are all playable characters.

Itadaki Street DS

An upcoming game for the Nintendo DS, Itadaki Street DS will be created by Square Enix, the creators of other games such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Mario Hoops 3-on-3.

Itadaki Street DS, along with having the board game style of the Itadaki Street series, will have Mario Party style mini-games in it.

Confirmed Mario characters in the game are Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Princess Daisy and Waluigi. From the Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior series, we have Slime, Jessica, Dragonlord, Pudding, Bianca, Angelo and Yangus.

Mario Kart Arcade GP 2

The sequel to Mario Kart Arcade GP, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, like it's predecessor, will be for the arcade. Atleast a dozen new items and weapons have been shown, along with several new tracks.

Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Princess Peach, Toad and Bowser have all been confirmed as characters; Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Blinky from Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 are also going to be returning. Waluigi and a Tamagotchi, named Mametchi, are also shown to be new characters.

Super Paper Mario

The third instalment in the Paper Mario series, Super Paper Mario will be for the Wii and unlike Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Paper Mario will be an adventure game instead of an RPG.

So far, it has been revealed that a new villain by the name of Count Bleck has appeared in the Mushroom World and plans on causing untold destruction, apparently by having Princess Peach and Bowser marry eachother. Its up to Mario, who has been transported to the dimension of Flipside to stop Count Bleck and save the day.

Mario Party 8

The latest game in the Mario Party series, Mario Party 8 will be exclusively on the Wii and will make use of all the "Wiimote's" capabilities.

Dozens of new mini-games have been shown so far, new "candy powerups" have also been shown; these powerups will seemingly give characters special powers.

So far, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Birdo, Wario, Waluigi, Toad, Toadette, Boo and Hammer Bro. and Blooper have are confirmed characters. Some non-playable characters include MC Ballyhoo, Big Top, Donkey Kong, Bowser and King Boo.

Some new boards include: DK's Treetop Temple, Goomba's Booty Boardwalk, King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, Koopa's Tycoon Town and Bowser's Warped Vortex.

Mario Strikers Charged

The sequel to Super Mario Strikers, Mario Strikers Charged will have several new characters and fields in it.

So far, Mario, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Bowser, Wario and Waluigi have been shown to be game captains; with Koopa Troopas, Boos, Toads, Dry Bones and Kritters as teamates. "Thunder Island" and "The Vice" have are new feilds in the game.

Thats all for this month, tune in next time, maybe they'll be more to report. Until next time....

Never EVER stop rock'n
- Meat Loaf

F zm fc323ef.png

Due to an extensive Wing contest at the Mushroom Bowl, Crime Lords Wizpig and Jabba the Hutt were neck in neck in a tie. As far as authorities can point out, Wizpig left the theater with a silver cup (he was seconded to Jabba). He apparently stole Jabba's last Kit Kat bar and was shot to death in his car in a drive-by shooting believed to be masterminded by Jabba himself. we interviewed Jabba on the tragedy and he just said "Give me a break". As far as this report is concerned this may turn into another Cold Case.

F am ed81fa0.png

Meat Loaf has been on tour the past few months and landed in the Mushroom Kingdom early last Saturday and played with the MSO (Mushroom Symphony Orchestra). The big guy was doing a great performance and pleased many critics that saw it, until the finale. Meat did some stuff from his new album plus many classics including "Objects in the Rear view mirror". During his "Johnny B. Goode" final song, things got outta hand. Meat attempted his regular stage dive, only to cripple those who caught him. From eyewitness reports Meat landed on an elderly man who is now in critical condition. Another victim was a monstrous plant named Petey. I can't spell the plant species name so I won't risk the embarrassment. Well Petey, After Meat landed on him gave birth to a son. Petey will be pressing charges on Meat Loaf for this unexpected twist of fate.

F Sportsm 1f3cdcb.png

In Baseball, Luigi has a perfect run score of some odd decimal number I don't recall. He retired this month and is co-boss guy at Barbie HQ in LA. He should be wedded in late May. Due to user hating my perverse perv speech, I can't say what gender he is in love with nor how he feels about a certain Jorge.

No other sports were written down due to the other reporters died in an airplane accident to see the annual Mushroom sports games on Kitchen Island. Don't look for them in obituaries, they wont be there, for they aren't that special (and I didn't feel like it).

Riddles

Can you figure out who or what is being described in these clever lines? From Plumber, Riddles of the Pipe.

Riddle #1

I used to just sit around all day without moving
Getting fed and tanned was pretty all I was doing
But, then one day, I was changed
You may say I died,
But I prefer "changed"
But at least I could move
I only wish I could walk freely
What/Who am I?

Riddle #2

If you want something destroyed,
I’m your man(?)
I can manhandle anything until it is destroyed
I’m even more destructive than all the Trollers
and their sockpuppets combined (even Peachycakes!)
Tell me where it is, and that will be its last destination before destruction
I’ll even go as far as to having a seizure,
get bombs dropped on me and missiles fired at me
As long as it’s destroyed
So, if you ever need a hand in destroying things,
Just give me a(n) call email
Cause, I prefer to type
Since my speaking isn’t all that great
I can only tell you a few laughs and screams
I’m your man(?)
Who/What am I?

Riddle #3

I kidnapped someone in a video game once, you know
But some people don’t want you to know
Those people say I did not
But another group and I say I did!
Of course, now I don’t do that anymore
But I bet you can’t guess who I am!
You could try to beat videogame to prove you know who I am
But I bet you can’t do it!
Forget the game!
You’d lose anyway!
And even if you did win…
You would never get the best score!
And I only tell who gets 1st place in the high scores!
So ha!
Who/What am I? (You won’t guess)

New ACTIVE Users

Though we didn't reach 166 new users this month, we have a ton of new active ones. Here I again list the most active:

Also shout-outs to RAP (talk) and Maxlover2 (talk) (*) for still being super-active this month.

News

The big news this month was of the RareWiki. It was decided that the Banjo & Conker series was of barely any importance on this wiki, so a wiki that has it of primary importance was created by me (or, rather, a Wikia). This follows the Diddy Kong Racing DS report from last month. Although customized and with 90 articles, 72 files, and nearly 20 active users, the RareWiki needs help getting that jumpstart. I'll report on its progress this month.

New created on February 12th is the Trouble Center. Based off of the trouble center of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, users post a request (such as adding a navigation template to all pages related to it, etc.) and another user takes on the request. So far the Trouble Center boosts 21 completed requests, and has helped with mainspace edits greatly.

Otherwise, the wiki has continued to be very vibrant and informative to all. Please keep in mind of the MKDSummer Event – I still want to try to get something down.

Also, today's unofficially Mario Day. The origins come from leet: 1 = i and 0 = o in leet. Take the abbreviation of the month March and combine it with today's date to get Mar10 (Mario). There's various traditions for some people and whatnot, but regardless, happy Mario Day!

One last note... MarioWiki:Anniversary. If the link's red, you're reading the 'Shroom hot off the press, and it hasn't been created yet. If the link's not red, click on it. This big project should be very fun.

Editor's Notes

by the Director

Oh boy...where to start today.

For starters, I have only 6 minutes to write this. This is because I'm extremely late in posting this. I apologize to all users eagerly awaiting this issue – you see, I guess I celebrated Mar10 today by playing the Pit of 100 Trials from 3 to 6 in the morning...that left me too tired to finish on-time. That also shows how obsessed I am with The Thousand-Year Door... again, sorry. ;) :P

One of our writers from last month, HK-47, has missed the deadline. You'll see his next editorial next issue as well as a reply to his first editorial. Additionally, Parayoshi has not been seen since he signed up – I'm not sure on his status. Finally, Maxlover2 will do half of "Did You Know That..." with Aipom next issue.

Speaking of next issue: there is some preference to have it on April Fool's Day, which is a Sunday, and just 22 days away. I am willing to have a fun and crazy issue for Issue IV, but I want general agreement among contributors. Leave your thoughts on the idea on my talk page. If you're the first, make a new section, otherwise add a comment in that section. Otherwise, Issue IV will be on April 7th, the following Saturday.

Finally...MarioWiki:Anniversary. When it isn't red, be sure to click. I want as many users as possible involved.

I hope you enjoyed our new Fun Section as well. 'Til then see ya!
