Wii's successor?Edit

Ok, I'm not pretty sure if I understood very well in the videos, but the Wii U works with the wii, so it can't work alone actually. The infobox then says it will be the sucessor of the Wii, but it shouldn't if this works with the wii on - and the succesor's info should be deleted, unless they did have announced a definitive sucessor for the wii (and if possible, the Wii U as well) ¢oincollctor rsitem209.png

Never mind, the console is totally different. Now I see pics clearly. ¢oincollctor rsitem209.png

StubEdit

How is this a stub? Stubs are not short articles, they are articles with missing info. This article has all of the available info.  DKPetey99TCE 14:09, 7 June 2011 (EDT)

Just remove it if you see it

It's a stub because not everyone knows about the Wii U completely.

Gamecube CompatabilityEdit

It doesn't seem to have it. I'm going to miss it. Will everyone forget about the gamecube? Even the PS3 has PS1 compatability (I think).

I don't see any holes.

The Wii U does not support the GameCube. --Mechawave 07:16, 8 June 2011 (EDT)

It is speculated that you may be able to download Gamecube games to the Wii U, however will the gamecube controllers be at least compatible?
The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gamerlad2 (talk).

The Wii U won't be compatible with Gamecube controllers because the buttons are on the contoller/console itself.   Super Chris Helper

Will there be Super Mario Sunshine to download? And if you download it, is that in Nintendo Points then? Or is that in a valuta like the 3DS? -- Armin00  16:26, 19 July 2012 (EDT)

In fact the information in the discussion and on the Wii U page itself is inaccurate. The Wii U is completely capable of playing GameCube titles, but it requires the use of homebrew software, in this case Nintendont. You can then play any titles and also use the Wii Classic Controller and the Wii U Pro Controller, and of course GameCube pads with the Wii U USB adapter for them - yes you can mix and match the controller types. Games are upscaled to 1080p with flicker fixing option available. As with the Wii, it's pretty much full hardware emulation due to shared architecture so everything is about as perfect as you're going to get. I haven't updated the main page as a lot of places don't appreciate homebrew software mentions. 188.39.147.178 (talk) 11.27, 5 July 2016

DiscsEdit

Will the normal Wii discs work? This was kind of a stupid question to ask but does it work on this? YoshiGo99

I do not know ^^;  Birdobeauties

Where on the Controller is the C Button located? All Nintendo controllers will have a C Button you know. Also, This could get released late this year in Japan and New super Mario bros. Mii Could be a launch game. --Super Mario 510 21:24, June 12, 2011 (UTC)

The only controller that have C buttons is N64 controller. Where do you see C buttons on GCN controller? It has C Stick instead. Where do you see C buttons/sticks on Wii controllers? It doesn't have them. Also, why R Stick won't be a C Stick for you? SWFlash

MicrophoneEdit

Is there any word on the microphone yet? Any games that mention its use? Why Bother (talk)

I know you probably wrote this ages ago, but a microphone will be present. No developers has mentioned its use explicitly in their products, but there is a good chance that all games will utilize it somehow. NSMBU will most probably use it seeing as NSMBW did, but nothing is confirmed. Jackpot Jordan 02:50, 31 August 2012 (EDT)

Main Mario game in the works?Edit

According to this IGN artcile, a new Main Mario game is in the works, yet how it will work is not mentioned, should we do something about this?

--Byllant 23:09, 8 November 2011 (EST)

No. No information is offered about the game, only that one is planned. Mario4Ever (talk)
No? and what about this line "[Yoshiaki Koizumi] confirmed that the next big Mario game is already in the works.", this is not so different to the Super Smash Bros. game, whose development has not begun yet, it is exactly the same case. --Byllant 15:01, 12 November 2011 (EST)
It's not the same case. At least with SSB, we have a tentative title. With this, we have nothing (at best, we could say "an unnamed Mario game," but that's not the slightest bit useful). Mario4Ever (talk)
Actually, there's no tentative name with both games, Nintendo just said "...to made Smash Bros. for both, N3DS and Wii U", where's the tentative title? it's the same to say Super Smash Bros. and Unnamed Mario title than Untitle super smash Bros. sequel (as that's the title for Wikipedia) and Mario (Wii U), but I crearly understande the idea, I want this to finish, so we've better wait for a more official announcement. --Byllant 15:35, 12 November 2011 (EST)

SSB. UniverseEdit

On some websites it was rumored that the next SSB will be called Super Smash Bros. Universe. I think its worth mentioning although its already been deleted when I added it. Does anyone agree this should be placed in the article. Here's one website with the rumour.[2]

The Wii U has Release Date in AmericaEdit

I found in a page of a game shop in Mexico, the relaese date for the Wii U in America= December 25, 2012. That's fantastic! And you can apart it now! I gonna apart it now :)

Should a page be made for Mario Wii U?Edit

We have screenshots now, and that was good enough for Super Mario 3D Land. And the images should go somewhere at least. Mariofanatic64 (talk)

And where are the screenshots?  YoshiDaisySSBM (talk)
We shouldn't create nothing unless an official name has been revealed. Said pictures can stay around the wiki for a while.

¢oincollctor rsitem209.png

What about the Paper Mario 3DS? Didn't they say that was a tentative title too? If there is a page on that, there should be for this, same with Super Mario 3D Land, before the whole title was released, there was an article on it entitled Super Mario 3DS, and again Mario Kart 7 was Mario Kart 3DS. Why should this one be any different? iruni181 (talk)

Virtual ConsoleEdit

[4] It says that all of your Wii's save data and shop downloads including VC games can be transfered to the Wii U. Does this mean that older VC games will be downloadable to the Wii U or you'd have to download them to the Wii then transfer them? SKmaric (talk)

All that article is saying is that Nintendo is working on a way for people to transfer their existing save data and downloads to the Wii U from the Wii (e.g. everything they've already played/bought). It doesn't say anything about older VC games being downloadable directly from the Wii U. Mario4Ever (talk)

  • WIIU SYSTEM W/ - GM - 11/11/12 $299.99

BitsEdit

How many bits does the Wii U have?

Hi! I'm Electrical Bowser jr.!

Not much has been revealed about the Wii U's processor so it's unknown, though it's probably either 32-bits or 64-bits. Note that "Bits" as a measure of console power has been completely meaningless since the Dreamcast and that mainstream "256 bits" (as some might think exist based on the 8/16/32/128 bits leaps) CPUs-and thus consoles- don't exist. --Glowsquid (talk) 12:59, 6 October 2012 (EDT)

Actually, they kind of do. DK Fan

I think they're more than 64-bit. After all, did you see the graphics for New Super Mario Bros. U? They're 10 times better than Super Mario 64's or Mario Party's!

Hi! I'm Electrical Bowser jr.!

It is HD that is why. If it wasn't HD they would be like NSMBW models. YoshiGo99

Yeah. 64 bits for sure. Have any of you seen the first cutscene in super Mario 3D world? The Wii must've been 32 bit or lower.

From Wikipedia (this is not from Nintendo but from reverse enganireing by a hacker) "Broadway-based core architecture[14] Three cores at 1.243125 GHz Symmetric multiprocessing with MESI/MERSI support Each core can output up to 3 instructions per clock using superscalar parallelism. 32-bit integer unit 64-bit floating-point (or 2× 32-bit SIMD, often found under the denomination "paired singles") A total of 3 MB of Level 2 cache in an unusual configuration.[16] Core 0: 512 KB, core 1: 2 MB, core 2: 512 KB 4 stage pipeline 5 Execution Units per core (15 EUs total) Die size: 4.74 mm × 5.85 mm = 27.73 mm2" Just note most systems dont go any higher than 64 bits the higher ammounts of bits are experimental 64.113.186.3 08:27, 25 April 2014 (EDT)

The marketing slogan for the Wii UEdit

Okay, this question just came to my mind when examining this article; if I'm not mistaken, the "How U Will Play Next" slogan is primarily targeted for the Nintendo of America regions, correct? Just wanted to check on this before I do any edit attempts (mainly to clarify where that slogan came from). Wii U Dead?Edit

I've heard some rumors about nintendo stopping the making of Wii U consoles. So can it be considered discontinued yet, because i don't really know if that's true Koopas lost shell   13:13, 6 November 2016 (EST)

Probably not yet. Nintendo is sure pulling life support though, with virtually no more games barring Breath of the Wild, no more updates (wheras 3DS got an update recently) and how they published sales figures for the top selling games. Still, I wouldn't exactly call it discontinued yet.   It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 15:49, 6 November 2016 (EST)
It is confirmed from Nintendo, but no known date.   Yoshi the SSM (talk) 18:29, 10 November 2016 (EST)

Discontinued DatesEdit

I'm not 100% sure about the source on the discontinued date being 1/31/17. They didn't stop production globally at the same time, they are saying that as of that moment, no one was manufacturing anymore systems, meaning in some country, likely japan, they were the last ones to stop production, giving the results of "ended globally".

  • In Brazil, the correct date seems to be all the way back on January 1st, 2015.[6]
  • In Europe, the correct date is likely October 1st, 2016.[7]
  • In North America (and maybe Canada), the correct date is likely November 10th, 2016.[8]
  • In Australia, the correct date might be not long after November 14th, 2016.[9]
  • In Japan, the correct date is likely January 31st, 2017.[10]
  • For Mexico, and South Africa, I don't yet know, but it's probably not 1/31/17.

Mario launch titlesEdit

Should we note launch titles or not for the Wii U? In other words, should we write next to New Super Mario Bros. U in the Mario-related games section that it's a launch title? Note that this could apply to all other consoles.   18:31, 13 July 2017 (EDT)

It already makes a mention of that on the game page itself (and on Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario 64, in case you're wondering), so I don't think it needs to be noted here.    18:36, 13 July 2017 (EDT)

Commercial FailureEdit

Following some edit warring on this page, does anyone think we should call the Wii U a commercial failure on this article?   Nightwicked Bowser

I personally feel it's too strong/opinionated a term to use. Also, I've locked the article for the time being due to the aforementioned edit war. --KPH2293 21:49, December 16, 2020 (EST)
That's why I was against using that term too, it felt subjective here.   Nightwicked Bowser
It was pointed out to me by a fellow administrator that in an interview, Reggie Fils-Aimé was asked if the Wii U was a "necessary failure", and he reluctantly agreed. Perhaps that interview could be quoted in the article or something like that. Otherwise, I agree that it's best not to use the term "commercial failure". --KPH2293 21:59, December 16, 2020 (EST)
Imo, you shouldn't fully protect the page, but just semi-protect it so other non-admin-autoconfirmed-users can edit it.  DarkNight  22:27, December 16, 2020 (EST)
Considering the popularity Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and Hyrule Warriors had, I still think "failure" is too strong a word. It didn't dazzle the way they historically had, but it still sold well and had many widely played games. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:30, December 16, 2020 (EST)
There's... not really anything saying against it being a commercial failure, though. Sales were terrible.    22:32, December 16, 2020 (EST)
Fair point about the protection. Alex has done as you requested, and I will not contest that decision. --KPH2293 22:33, December 16, 2020 (EST)
Didn't see Doc's comment when I made mine. The games sold well for the system itself, but even the best selling title, Mario Kart 8, sold just over 8 million copies. Compared to other systems, that is pretty low. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is more than three times that currently.    22:37, December 16, 2020 (EST)
In response to Doc, that also applies to a lot of systems like the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. But they still sold 9-10 million units and are still considered failures. The Wii U throughout its entire life still sold at the pace of a Sega Saturn, so it didn't really do well in its life at all.--72.143.194.137 18:06, December 18, 2020 (EST)

By any objective measure, the Wii U was a commercial failure: it repeatedly fell short of Nintendo's forecasts by a large margin (even after said forecasts were slashed multiple times) as well as one exec's expectation of 100 million units lifetime. Its performance lead to some of Nintendo's biggest anual losses in its history. Besides the interview mentioned above, Reggie directly called it "a failure forward" in an university lecture. --Glowsquid (talk) 22:59, December 16, 2020 (EST)

I absolutely agree. The Wii U selling 13.56 million and the PS Vita selling close to 15 million units is still considered a commercial failure. The Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast selling 9 to 10 million units is considered a commercial failure.--72.143.194.137 18:06, December 18, 2020 (EST)
