Why is this seperate from Panser if it has the same Japanese name? It wouldn't surprise me if they were just redesigned, that's happened before. Binarystep (talk) 01:34, 9 March 2015 (EDT)

In fact, to quote the page for Panser (emphasis mine):

They are much like the Volcano Lotus and the Lava Lotus (as well as Pompon Flowers) of later games. In fact, they share the same Japanese name as the Volcano Lotus - Ponkey - meaning that the Volcano Lotus is a redesigned Panser.

Mario Portal

Mario Portal confirms that "Volcano Lotus", the original Super Mario World name, is the correct one. "Volcano Plant" is from Super Princess Peach, whose English localization is janky in the same way that Super Mario RPG's is, containing inconsistencies like "Boss P. Plant" and "Mecha-Spike Top". Therefore, it should not take priority, especially since people are far more likely to be familiar with SMW than SPP. 18:18, August 18, 2022 (EDT)

"Volcano Plant" was used as early as the Mario Mania Player's Guide (as was "Fishing Boo"). I wouldn't consider it an example of Super Princess Peach's localization jank. PopeLuigi (talk) 19:40, August 18, 2022 (EDT)

@LinkTheLefty: SMR doesn't appear to be janky like SPP is, and the difference between "Fishin' Boo" and "Fishing Boo" is honestly trivial. It's more of an alternate spelling than a new name outright, like Chain Chomp being hyphenated sometimes. Either way, "Fishing Boo" being used in a second, non-sloppily translated game supports the idea that it's more than just a one-off goof, unlike SPP's other naming oddities. 19:47, August 18, 2022 (EDT)

@PopeLuigi: Well, if nothing else, that could explain where the SPP localizers got the name, like "Inside the Volcano" from Nintendo Power showing up in SM64DS. "Volcano Plant" also showed up erroneously in the English manual, claiming that it's related to Jumpin' Piranha Plant when it's not, so the "Plant" name could be the result of someone on the old localization team mistakenly thinking it's related to (Fire?) See above. The Super Mario World section of the English Mario Portal, despite using the exact same "A. F. H. Bro" abbreviation used in Super Princess Peach's in-game glossary and also including other anachronistic names such as "Galoomba" and "Swoop", throws "Volcano Plant" in the garbage in favor of "Volcano Lotus", the original name. Since there's no way that shared abbreviation is a coincidence, I can only see this as an acknowledgement that "Volcano Plant" is a goof and that "Volcano Lotus" is the proper name for this enemy. This makes sense, since "Volcano Lotus" is overall a more fitting name given its relation to Lava Lotus, not to mention SPP's janky localization featuring "Boss P. Plant" and "Mecha-Spike Top".

LinkTheLefty (talk) As mentioned above, the "Plant" name was first used erroneously to connect it to Jumpin' Piranha Plant (correctly translated, it should've referred to regular Piranha Plants), and coupled with Super Princess Peach translators apparently referring to Mario Mania instead of the game and the fact that the glossary happens to list it after the Piranha Plant family, it seems very likely that some people mistakenly thought they were related to the (Fire) Piranha Plant rather than Lava Lotus.

Should point out that the "A. F. H. Bro" abbreviation besides being an uncanny coincidence that the wiki had recently moved enemies to their official abbreviated forms was probably just done for space, since "Big Fire Piranha Plan" shows up several times (why they didn't just cut "Plant" off, I don't know). I honestly have no idea why Big Fire Piranha Plant has the "t" cut off to begin with, since "Jumping Fire Piranha Plant" is longer, and that isn't shortened in any way. 19:38, August 27, 2022 (EDT)
