Biology

The rules of biology of the Mushroom World must be written either in crayon or on a Magnadoodle if simply sticking a straw in its mouth is enough to make it a new species. Then again, I'm probably taking this more seriously than I need to. 9:12 AM 7/25/2019 (EST) MarioLover54

"Species" isn't really all that defined in the the context of wiki organization. We treat this as separate from Shy Guy not from a biology standpoint but from more of a gameplay + appearance sort of thing. Just as how Beach Koopa is its own "species". This is why I use "variant" whenever I try to make new wikis for similar franchises. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:03, July 25, 2019 (EDT)

Paper Mario: The Origami King?

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, there is one Shy Guy that appears drinking with a straw, and the articles have called it "Slurp Guy" just because of the straw. The name "Slurp Guy" does not appear anywhere in this game, so I really don't think we should use that name for it and keep all mentions of the name "Slurp Guy" restricted to Paper Mario: Color Splash, including on the Slurp Guy article itself. Does anyone else think so? Bowser Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8

It's definitely meant as a callback to Color Splash, so I think we should at least mention it in the article, though maybe without calling it a Slurp Guy outright. Niiue - Who has lost his tail? 08:12, August 22, 2020 (EDT)
There is the name "Slurp Guy" present as a string in the game's data. I think it could be referring to this specific Shy Guy. Dino Rhinos also aren't referred to by name in-game, and yet are named in the text data. Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 14:57, May 4, 2021 (EDT)
That could also be a left-over file from Color Splash. The Dino Rhino however is clearly meant to be a Dino Rhino. Bowser Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 15:04, May 4, 2021 (EDT)
It's in glossary.msbt, which contains names and such terms commonly used in-game. There's names for the Vellumentals, Legion of Stationary, TOK-exclusive areas, and no CS leftovers (the only other name that's in CS but not TOK is Poison Blooper). I can check the teahouse's scripts to see if this Shy Guy is given a specific name as well. Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 15:08, May 4, 2021 (EDT)
Double-checked, here's some evidence:
  • Japanese glossary.msbt contains the text "ストローヘイホー" labeled as "Name_HEIST". English equivalent text is Slurp Guy.
  • Sprite names for Slurp Guys in CS are STHEI.bfres.lz; same initialism, but moved to a different place.
  • The straw is a 3D model under the name P_HEI_Straw.bfres.zst. It still uses the regular Shy Guy textures, P_HEI.Red.bntx.zst.
  • \data\map\W2G2_TeaRoom\dispos_Npc.elf.zst creates this character with the object name P_HEI_ITEM_01 and the shape P_HEI_Straw. For reference, the other Shy Guy in the room is P_HEI_01 and P_HEI. Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 15:31, May 4, 2021 (EDT)
That looks very complicated to me, does that mean it's being labeled as a Slurp Guy or a Shy Guy? Bowser Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 16:04, May 4, 2021 (EDT)
It has the same name, the same filename initialism, and looks visually the same (a red Shy Guy drinking from a straw, except the straw is 3D). The Shy Guy being created specifically with the straw means that it is a part of the character as well, making it a Slurp Guy. Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 16:31, May 4, 2021 (EDT)
One thing I can add is that, if it's in glossary.msbt, I find it unlikely to be a Color Splash leftover. As I understand it, the glossary is an unused file in many other Switch games that's basically the localization reference for the game's terminology. Apparently, several newer games blank it out on compile. I believe it's also referenced internally for any promotional materials like prospective regional guides, but I'm not 100%. I kind of regret using the term "leftovers" so much, because a lot of these aren't direct imports. They're redrawn slightly (usually for perspective changes) and have brand new back sprites (every character except Ptooies and Dino Rhinos). This is definitely an original file. I think glossary.msbt is used for common terms such as enemy names, since IIRC they aren't present anywhere else. Again, I'm not totally sure. For my money, it's a Slurp Guy. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:38, May 14, 2021 (EDT)
