Official name? Hello, I'm Time Turner.

I'm pretty sure it is, but I could be wrong.--FREAK ~Game GameBros.png Freak~ OUT!
Source? Hello, I'm Time Turner.
I don't think its official, but maybe it is in a guide... Fawfulfury65
Hm, they're just refered to generically as "gray Coins" in the Super Mario World guide. Which doesn't necessarily mean that "Silver Coin" is unofficial, though. Time Questions 13:33, 21 February 2010 (EST)

Offical name

Silver Coin is it's offical name because, I was searching super mario world stuff on google and i found some page saying that this name is offical. GalladeBack.pngGalladeBladesGallade2.png

Yeah, but google pages musn't be right.-World of Freak ? Block

NSMB

So both this page and the P-Switch page refer to the silvery-blue coins in New Super Mario Bros./New Super Mario Bros. Wii as Silver Coins, but the Blue Coin page says that they're actually blue coins. Which type is it?--Vommack 20:52, 11 June 2012 (EDT)

Silver? In what way?

OK, what we have here are some pretty clearly blue coins for SMB3 and NSMB, which work like the blue coins from SM64 and the later NSMB games, and are distinctly blue, and not silver. Addmitedly, it's a metallic blue instead of a deep blue, but they're still blue. Are they called "silver" in those games? (EDIT: I see that's the case for Advanced 4) If that's the case, I'd like to direct your attention to the Red Boo page, which has primarily pink and orange examples. Bumping this. I suggest what should happen is that the SMB3 and NSMB versions should be treated as old names for Blue Coin, as the ones in those games are in fact blue and act the same as later Blue Coins, while the SMW ones should be split to "Gray Coin," as that seems to be what they're called in that game, as well as not acting like the others on this or that page in any way beyond pressing a switch to make them appear, as said switch causes enemies to turn into the coins, not to mention the extra life detail. This would leave only the DKR ones for this page. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:02, 11 January 2018 (EST)
Nintendo Power NSMB guide calls them Blue Coins. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:06, 11 January 2018 (EST)

Silver?

I think that the coins from super mario world should be called gray coins, Unless they are oficially called silver. and teh coins from MSMB should be called blue. User:190.15.198.184

Aye, this page is a mess. Hence why I added all the split templates. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:20, 3 April 2018 (EDT)

Merge SMB3 and NSMB info to Blue Coin and split SMW info to Gray Coin

merge the Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. info to Blue Coin and split the Super Mario World info to Gray Coin 5-2-0-0
These "Silver" Coins are not silver at all, with the exception of the Diddy Kong Racing ones. As Alex95 said above, Nintendo Power called the NSMB ones Blue Coins, with the name "Silver Coin" being used for the SMA4 guide from a few years earlier, while the item itself is pretty clearly the same thing. There's also the fact that the ones in all versions of SMB3 and in NSMB are, in fact, a light cyan, which is a shade of blue. Then, there's the point of them being special coins that only appear in specific places for a limited time when a blue switch is pressed, just like the Blue Coins of Super Mario 64 and the later NSMB games. So these coins are not silver, are blue, and act like most other depictions of Blue Coins.

As for the Super Mario World ones, the only name we have for them seems to be "Gray Coin," and they seem more grey than silver themselves. Additionally, they only act tenuously similar to the "silver" coins of the other games mentioned on this page, being that they only appear after a switch is pressed, but with very different specifics (ie from most enemies, and with a 1up obtained after collecting 7). So they seem to be a different thing.

Anyways, the only thing that should remain on this page, in my opinion, is the Diddy Kong Racing item.

Merge SMB3 and NSMB info with Blue Coin and split SMW info to Gray Coin

  1. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) Per above.
  2. Niiue (talk) Per above.
  3. YoshiFlutterJump (talk) Per proposal.
  4. Reboot (talk) Per proposal. Cyan isn't actually blue - it's a colour all by itself - but we have to work with what we're given, I suppose... (Re: SmokedChili - even if you don't like the English name for something, it still overrides the JP name.)
  5. LinkTheLefty (talk) It's highly doubtful that Rare had the Super Mario World object in mind when they made Diddy Kong Racing's Silver Coin. Per proposal.

Just merge SMB3 and NSMB info with Blue Coin

  1. SmokedChili (talk) My preferred option per my comments. I can understand merging SMB3 Silver Coins with NSMB Blue Coins, but SMW Silver Coins are called "Silver Coins" in Japan so I see no point in moving them even if the English version of Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. decides to call them "Gray Coins" for some reason.
  2. Waluigi Time (talk) Per SmokedChili.

Just split SMW info to Gray Coin

Do nothing

Comments

For some additional info, these are some Japanese names from ESMB for the Coins in question.
SMB3 Silver Coin: 隠しコイン; Hidden Coin
SMW Silver Coin: シルバーコイン; Silver Coin
NSMB Blue Coin: 青コイン; Blue Coin

So SMB3 Silver Coins behave like NSMB Blue Coins but have a different Japanese name (making it either the same object with a changed name or a different one with similar functions), and SMW Silver Coins are named such in a Japanese source so moving it to "Gray Coin" wouldn't be a good move imo. SmokedChili (talk) 09:27, 11 April 2018 (EDT)

Bit of an update regarding the information of this, it seems an actual grey/"silver" palette exists for coins in SMB3, but goes unused for them. Jelectros would have turned into them after hitting a switch, which is still far more similar to the grey/silver coins in Super Mario World than the hidden coins in Super Mario Bros. 3. It's worth noting, however, that Jelectro is actually, in function, a hazardous block and not an enemy, so it's comparable to the bricks that become regular coins when a switch is pressed. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:03, 11 April 2018 (EDT)

One note about Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (41) is that despite the name of the Super Mario Bros. 3 object translating to hidden coin, the description introduces it as 「青色のコイン。」 (Blue-colored coins.) So "silver" is not the intended color. LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:18, 25 April 2018 (EDT)
