Is it just me, or do Mario and the Koopa Troopa look like a drawing (their sprites didn't have wavy edges like these do)? Maybe we should use a better picture.M&L Just because you're in red doesn't mean you're strong. Have at you! 22:44, 2 February 2012 (EST)

The image needs to be replaced with something better, but my question is, do we really need a page like this? What's the point of this (no pun unintended)? Wouldn't it be better in the glossary?

Some musing before a possible proposal

As part of a move to hopefully mend this page that began on the Discord, we brought up off-handedly the idea of including score tables--of course, there's kind of an issue with that, namely that some of those tables have the potential to get huge. Compare and contrast these three games:

  • Donkey Kong (game): Distinct scores are given for various actions (be it jumping over or defeating enemies), on top of a few mechanics with variable scores (such as the time bonus) and at least one instance of the score system scaling depending on combos with the hammer.
  • Super Mario Bros.: Most things in this game use the same scoring system, but that scoring system usually scales.
  • Super Paper Mario: Most things in this game have incredibly distinct scores, because the score stands in for an RPG's XP counter. As a direct result, not only do you need a table of what things give what scores (this is not JUST a copy from the bestiary mind you, as multiple items impact your score and quite famously this game can decrease your score in select situations), you need a table of what score is necessary for what level.

...You see what we mean, right? Scoring systems in these games are extremely varied, and in a maximal case, it could get out of hand and drastically swell out this article's size. Our question is just if anyone has any idea what the best way to document these scores could be; optimally, it'd be something both in-depth and also succinct. ~Camwoodstock (talk) 15:37, February 11, 2024 (EST)

In my continuous rewrite project for this article, I see what you mean entirely and I believe this would be entirely beneficial overall. I've been trying to document the Donkey Kong point system and it honestly works better if we have the DK point system as a separate article to cover the differences between the arcade and NES versions. --OmegaRuby (talk) 11:45, February 26, 2024 (EST)
Something like our Quotes or Bestiary articles might actually be a good comparison, now that you mention the idea of separate articles. We could also presumably give an overview of things that generally give points/what points are for in each of the games in the main Point article. ~Camwoodstock (talk) 12:08, February 26, 2024 (EST)
I feel that holding a TPP to split the articles would be of best interest. Not sure if making the primary aspect of the article a table warrants one, as we need to rewrite this article anyways as it's in the current spotlight. --OmegaRuby (talk) 09:14, February 27, 2024 (EST)

Super Paper Mario

The article states that "The game also subtracts points instead of giving extra lives when the point chain gets far enough; this is because the game has no extra life system". I think this is illogical because lack of extra lives does not necessarily entail penalties. Also, I have seen speedruns of Super Paper Mario where the player accumulates level ups with long point chains, so I doubt if this statement is true. If I remember correctly, you get negative points instead of 1UPs if you play the classical trick of kicking a Koopa shell against stairs, an easter egg reference to Super Mario Bros.. You also get negative points if you defeat Floro Cragniens. Can someone confirm? --Dine2017 (talk) 22:49, February 21, 2024 (EST)

I personally don't know the internal mechanism behind the distribution of negative points, but you are correct about Floro Cragniens dropping negative points when defeated. From what I've seen, if during a combo you land on a "shelled" enemy and you are past a certain point threshold, the game begins to deduct points. This means for example, if you start a combo on different enemies and then land on a Koopa that will yield negative points. However repeatedly jumping off the projectiles spawned from a Squig will not deduct points, as it's a new entity for each bounce and there is no shelled enemy involved.
