Is the Wither really a Megasmilax?[edit]

There's no source listed that the Mario Mash-Up Wither skin is a reference to Megasmilax. The resource pack was mainly inspired by Super Mario 64 and more recent Mario games, and there is the absence of spines on the vine of the Wither to make it a direct reference to Megasmilax. It could have been an accidental homage? I just don't see Mojang/4J Studios pulling from Super Mario RPG of all games, especially since the pack was released long before the remake was even known about. --JoeCool (talk) 13:01, November 14, 2023 (EST)

This was brought up over here, and the general consensus seemed to be that it had the least issues as an appearance of Megasmilax/Smilaxes compared to the alternatives. LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:05, November 14, 2023 (EST)

Merge Material?[edit]

So, this is an odd situation. Strictly in terms of battle, "Smilax" (つぼみ, bud) refers to the smaller parts of the flower, and "Megasmilax" (クィーンフラワー, Queen Flower) refers to the big part. Simple enough to follow. However, in multiple pieces of dialog outside of battle, Shy Away / Beezo refers to the flower as the former in English, and the latter in Japanese. In the remake (at least as far as I've ascertained in English), this is unchanged. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the outlier as it uses separate translations in other languages than what would be used in the remake of Super Mario RPG. Considering the recent cake merge and the general merge of the big Piranha buds (with the notable exception of Lava Piranha, which can maybe be a separate discussion), should Megasmilax be merged with Smilax? It would also be somewhat consistent with King Calamari's tentacles and Exor's face. LinkTheLefty (talk) 08:35, December 15, 2023 (EST)

I would support a merge here. And for the record, I think Lava Bud could use a merge as well. Blinker (talk) 14:28, December 15, 2023 (EST)

Axing a Smilax[edit]

Merge Megasmilax to Smilax 5-0
See above. To recap, both the original and the remade Super Mario RPG consistently refer to the main flower as Smilax outside of battle. The namedrop of Megasmilax in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update is an outlier, but regardless, it is part of the same entity, so a merge would be in line with the recent cake merge and the general bud merges.

Merge Megasmilax to Smilax[edit]

  1. LinkTheLefty (talk) The Ultimate reference was probably made without double-checking the entire context, so I prefer being consistent with the originating game.
  2. Blinker (talk) Per proposal.
  3. Killer Moth (talk) Per proposal.
  4. Mikan-chan (talk) Per proposal. We did this with the Cake boss, so it would make sense to do the same thing here.
  5. OmegaRuby (talk) Per proposal.

Merge Smilax to Megasmilax[edit]

Leave Smilaxes alone[edit]

Comments[edit]

So, would this be like supposedly using Ghost instead of Polterpiranha in the Guidance? PrincessPeachFan (talk) 10:44, January 4, 2024 (EST)

I guess you can look at it that way except it's not my fault except it stems from a Japanese/English regional difference in the original game that the Guidance didn't account for: the Japanese uses the name of the big part for the overall flower out of battle (Queen Flower, or in other words, Megasmilax), whereas the English uses the name of the small bud instead (Smilax). The remake evidently didn't consider it an issue worth editing. That said, a merged article might have to expand the names in other languages section for clarity's sake. I'm not sure how the remake's other languages deal with it, but it looks at a glance like they followed the Japanese on this, despite the names being altered from Ultimate.
