Poison Mushroom

Should we add the Poison Mushroom ? It's an item that gives another transformation to Mario, but it's more like a "power-down"...
Banon (talk · edits) 15:42, 25 December 2012 (EST)

No, poison mushrooms are closer to enemies than power-ups.--File:NSMBWIIEJr.png BowserJunior RULES! 19:15, 1 January 2013 (EST)

They aren't power ups at all; closer to general items.

Rainbow

The "title" for every list is in a different color in order to make a "rainbow". Should we let that rainbow or write every title in the same color ? I prefer asking before editing the article if I shouldn't have done so.
Banon (talk · edits) 15:12, 6 April 2013 (EDT)

The rainbow is just there for decoration... but it doesn't look professional so I support making it a standard color.
'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 23:41, 10 April 2013 (EDT)
Honestly, I'd like it to be standard, but not because it doesn't look "professional", but the rainbow text can be pretty distracting and kind of pointless. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 01:22, 11 April 2013 (EDT)

Ok, so what color do we choose? Red, green, blue? :p
Banon (talk · edits) 13:23, 11 April 2013 (EDT)

I'd say the standard black. There's no need to differentiate the titles by color.

How does it transform an enemy to a coin? I used it before and it only made the Koopa Troopa in it's shell fall off. --APA TKB Umbreon, from Pokémon. 05:44, 25 April 2013 (EDT)

Also, it only gives you 5 coins for any enemy struck with it. --APA TKB Umbreon, from Pokémon. 05:46, 25 April 2013 (EDT)
You must kill more enemies with the same golden fireball or with the same chain of jump. If you do so, the reward increases until 50 Coins per enemy. Tsunami (talk)

DK64

Do the potions that Cranky Kong gives out count as power-ups? If they do they should probably be included on this page. Yoshi876 (talk)

Yes, technically, but what about the other games, including the Wario and Yoshi ones? Those clearly have power-ups, so those need to be mentioned here, too. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 00:04, 30 October 2013 (EDT)
At this purpose there are two possibilities:
  1. Making other sections for power-ups of other series;
  2. Rename this page "List of power-ups in the Mario series, so doing the same for other series.
I think that is better the first option... Tsunami (talk)

Returning Power-Ups

Currently, the list does not include returning power-ups for games. Should this be changed? For one thing, not all powerups return in all games (hell, not a single item on this page appears in every game on the list). For a second, power-ups often change effect between games (such as the Ice Flower from Mario Galaxy being a complete outlier in terms of effect when compared to Ice Flowers in other games; and more limited changes such as the leaf in SM3D Land making you look like Tanooki Mario, but not fly or turn into a statue - only fall slower like Bunny Mario). And for a third, even when they don't change function, they can radically change visual - the Super Mushroom's design on this page was only used in SMB and cosmetic homages thereto (like Mario Maker's SMB style).

In addition, there's other inconsistencies like the SMB3 images being of the All-Stars version, while the SMB ones are of the NES version. - Reboot (talk) 21:58, 8 December 2015 (EST)

Good point...you're probably right, but the Mushroom appears in [essentially] every Mario game there is. JLuigi.pngJ-Luigi (talk) 22:00, 8 December 2015 (EST)
Not in most of the 3D games, starting in SM64. And while mushrooms of other types appear in the Paper Mario games, the Super Mushroom - double sizes you indefinitely - doesn't. (Just for starters) - Reboot (talk) 22:03, 8 December 2015 (EST)
Typically, "Mushroom" refers to the usual Mushroom from Super Mario Bros., and also you may notice I said "essentially." SM64 doesn't have them, but that's it for the most part. JLuigi.pngJ-Luigi (talk) 22:05, 8 December 2015 (EST)
First, note that Mushroom (HP recovery) is a different article from Super Mushroom (double-size, as in SMB onward):
Secondly:
  • Super Mario 64: Absent
  • Super Mario Sunshine: Absent
  • Super Mario Galaxy: Absent
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2: Absent
And the RPG games have Mushrooms that recover HP, rather than double-size/etc you. - Reboot (talk) 22:15, 8 December 2015 (EST)

Rearrange this page according to power-up, not debut game

Settledproposal.svg This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal.

rearrange 7-0
As I said above, currently this page treats power-ups as accumulative - as if they appear in every game past their debut, as opposed to every game having a different lineup - and ignores that the design of a power-up in their original game often differs from the design that becomes the default later on. Rather than listing Super Mushrooms and suchlike umpteen times, how about we just go with alphabetising (the "Images" column would not show every sprite, just the major design changes. Maximum of five, but I don't think any power-ups actually have that many major changes). Columns to look something like this:

Item Image(s) Game(s) Effect
Super Mushroom SMB Supermushroom.png Mushroomsmb3.png File:MushroomSMW.PNG File:Mushroom2.PNG Super Mario Bros., SMB: The Lost Levels, SMB3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros., NSMB Wii, NSMB2, NSMBU, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker Turns Small Mario into Super Mario, allowing him to withstand damage, break Brick Blocks, and find other power-ups.

The choice of images seems strange to me. I think we should just keep it to latest game appearance as in its infobox in its respective article and the Mario (franchise) page. I'm not dogmatic about that, if everyone else disagrees. I'm more fussed about the only visual representation of the likes of the Super Mushroom being their unrepresentative early sprites. - Reboot (talk) 00:16, 15 December 2015 (EST)

While the proposed change would be great for the given example, including any other item that has been in several games, it does nothing for the items in few games. I'm not seeing the benefit. -- Ghost JamShyghost.PNG 17:37, 13 December 2015 (EST)

The previous format lists a particular power-up only once, omitting recurring power-ups. This isn't helpful since you don't know if a game has a particular power-up or not (Super Mario 64 DS has the Mushroom; Super Mario 64 doesn't, but it's not immediately apparent) so the organization in this page is not very good. I feel like the most optimal choice is to list the same power-up more than once. If a power-up appears in a game, list it under that game's header, and display a picture of how the power-up looks in that game. That way we get complete coverage of how the power-ups look like whilst not having to suffer from arbitrary choices, plus where power-ups appear is made more clear. What does everyone else think about this? PidgeyIcon.pngRandomYoshi(TalkPMsC) 02:58, 15 December 2015 (EST)

I think it would be more useful to list power-ups by type because this article is focused on just that (my first impressions when I view an article like this). Also, a few power-ups recur frequently, so I think that would get repetitive quickly although if it doesn't take a whole lot of space of repeats, then it might be feasible. I like the idea of different images though, but I'm not keen on the repeats. If you want to look up a particular game style, then would visiting the game pages be too inconvenient? Simply listing per game was my first thought (see #Returning Power-Ups above), but the more I thought about it the more it seemed doing so would just bloat the page.
Plus "list of power-ups", not List of power-ups by game. That implies the power-ups are the main thing to sort by. - Reboot (talk) 22:57, 15 December 2015 (EST)

Can we please have some actual order to this page

Basically, this page appears to be sorted alphabetically. I do not like that because I think it makes the page look extremely messy and I think that there are much neater ways they could be ordered. It's really annoying to search for a powerup in the table in the kind of shuffled mess they are in created by alphabetical order. 3D Player 2010 16:56, 16 April 2016 (EDT)

I would seriously appreciate it if this would get a reply. 3D Player 2010 19:43, 16 May 2017 (EDT)
I usually like having lists alphabetical, actually. Makes it easier for me. Personal preferences.
Is there a different way you have in mind? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:46, 16 May 2017 (EDT)
The only other way I can see to organize this page would be debut game, but for me it's easier to look alphabetically, and the page looks perfectly fine to me in alphabetical order, and it's how the wiki does a lot of lists, like characters, enemies, and items, among others. Yoshi876 (talk)

More clear separation between helpful items and actual power-ups?

Should some of these really be considered power-ups? I mean, things you hold or maybe even wear (pirhana plant, pickaxe, spiny/buzzy helmet, etc.) are just that, things you gold and wear. I do think tanooki suit, frog suit, and the like should be kept because those overall alter the player's abilities, but the pickaxe is less a new ablity given to toad and rather just toad using a pickaxe, just like me with a pair of scissors isn't me with a new ability, it's just me with a pair of scissors. I feel like if that should be considered a power-up then (sorry, I know it's already been discussed) the poison mushroom should too, especially since it's almost as much a power-down as a mini-mushroom (in some cases a mini-mushroom is worse since a poison mushroom would at least just bring you from Fire Mario to Super Mario and not directly to small Mario) but that's just nitpicking. I don't know, I'm just addressing this because I'm looking through all the powerups for something I'm making and things like the Pirhana Plant and Pickaxe are really distracting and makes the list unnecesarrily long and tedious to read and it just makes everything disorganised... On a side note, it would be great if there could be some kind of sorting that acknowledged some power-ups are very related to other power-ups to the point of being almost the same (like the statue leaf and tanooki suit) but this is just a suggestion and I understand if it wouldn't work. Thanks!!

While I agree that some aren't exactly "powers", the thing is that (most of) the games regard them as such. It's strange to list a Pick-Axe as a power-up, yes, but that's the way it is. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 15:30, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
I do agree to an extent with the extra-life items or the + Clock, which don't even affect the player, only other statistics around the player. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 16:28, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
A power-up is a power that is good. Actual affects don't actually matter. The Poison Mushroom is not good unless it affects the enemy as well, which it has only done in some games and even then it is a bad power. The Mini Mushroom on the other hand, has the ability for the player to be able to walk on water and other stuff at the price of one hit and your done. All things will have a disadvantage of some sort. It would be nice if we had a way to actually know how the power ups rank (from major to minor) in helpfulness. New Arrangement Idea (Categories)

What if the items were to be arranged by the type of game? They would separate like: Platformer, RPG's, Racing, Party, Etc. I think it would be a lot easier to navigate to the certain items you would want to find out about (Though some items might get repeated, like the Mega Mushroom would show in the Platforming section as well as the Kart Racing section. --Crafty Potatoes (talk) 14:27, 13 June 2018 (EDT)
