unused opening scenesEdit

should some the the scenes during the opening be mentioned? there are a few scenes that are shown in it that aren't played in game. such as mario getting chased out of a pipe by a goomba in what is presumably Kero Sewers, and fighting Bowser's troops in the area where Bowyer is met. granted they are more introductory scenes, but they do not happen in the game at all unlike some of the other scenes shown.Pikmin theories (talk) 02:02, August 3, 2023 (EDT)

Help finding a scan source with to-dosEdit

This talk page or section has a conflict or a question that needs to be answered. Please try to help and resolve the issue by leaving a comment.

First, a little background: there was a certain pre-release image that I believe was first shared online around 2016 (possibly earlier) by the "Super Mario RPG Secrets" webmaster, who had a GameFAQs account. I don't recall if I offered translation help on it at the time, but I downloaded the image for archival in case, and kind of forgot about it for a while, expecting it to be included in the webmaster's next update. But...the update never happened, and as far as I can tell, the image has never been reuploaded elsewhere. Last I checked, the Photobucket link eventually expired. I think I tried to reach out and ask for permission to reupload it a few years ago, but I never heard back, or maybe there was a lapse in communication. I assume he'd be okay with it, and the time seems right. So, here it is: a nearly lost Japanese magazine scanMedia:SMRPG Prerelease Toad Minister.png! More details are in the aboutfile, but the scene just does not exist in the final game. I presume both the proto and final forms of the Chancellor are there because the magazine mixed old and new material together (I think it was speculated back then that there was an impostor subplot, but it looks more like he's just asking for Mario to jump, which he never does in the final). Thing is, it's a mystery to me where exactly this was scanned from. This was not something mentioned in the original post. I'm hoping someone can give clues on where to search, because if we follow it - given the footage and tons of Nintendo Magazine System scans that surprisingly have yet to be combed through - there might be an even bigger treasure trove of pre-release material that isn't documented. EDIT: Judging from here, it was most probably either Dengeki Super Famicom Magazine 1995 (which, if you dive in, be prepared that Dengeki might have some adult content) or Marushou 1995 (which I know nothing about). Nonetheless, I did follow the lead, and found THIS. I was right: there is a goldmine of other pre-release screenshots and renders that have rarely been documented, especially the 1995 material. I unfortunately don't spot the source for this particular scan, but I found a similar blurb with the same screenshot here (with the early Chancellor highlighted), which reaffirms the legitimacy of the image. And apparently, Mushroom Kingdom may have been the early Japanese name for the Mushroom Castle town which would be even more evidence of my suspicion that the English release started getting translated/localized from an earlier script? I thought NMS was overwhelming enough, but I don't even know where to start here. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:53, October 31, 2023 (EDT)

Update: it actually right under my nose - the second page here - proving it was a Dengeki 1995 source. With that settled, there's still a ton of stuff to sort through. I think we can more than double the size of the article with all the information that's just lying about. I do have old notes from looking at Nintendo Magazine System scans on Internet Archive. Since the magazine is an official Nintendo source, I think we should start there, and then compare to the Japanese magazines if there's better versions (just beware that some, like VideoGameArt&Tidbits submissions, have watermarks - look under the Spikey flavor text). Here's my overview of the Nintendo Magazine System material:

  • Nintendo Power Volume 78 (November 1995). Page 51. Different battle buttons, possible early Mario, A is Special instead of Y.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (UK) Issue #38 (November 1995). Note AU Issue #33 has the same feature the following month.
    • Pages 4 and 5. Early Kremling-like Croco in what looks like a bowler hat instead of a silk hat, unused Knife Guy having an audience somewhere outside, unused scene of Mario on the floor while the Princess laughs in her room (looks like the player warped here since the location text is still displayed?). I spotted better quality versions of these among the Japanese previews, so this seems skippable for now, though that Mario render in the middle is very strange.
    • Pages 68 and 69. That render again, and an early logo. Some of the screens are repeated, or we have, and that screenshot of Toad and the early Chancellor can be seen in the bottom left. Mario seen fighting Count Down by himself, and also...fighting Knife Guy and Grate Guy in Mushroom Kingdom? Also, Mario seems to be looking up at the Item Shop. Blurb at the bottom right says something about buying a "Mushroom Sword" and "Kooppa Shield".
    • Page 70. Some early translations, such as Frog Hermit and Croak Lane. Basically the equivalent of what the Japanese previews had. And "Docherty" is oddly interpreted as the name of the mole people instead of the location, but I noticed that in the Japanese side too. Better shots of Croco and an unused mole scene, but again, I think Japanese previews have better quality. More screens of Margarita/Valentina and Dodo are also in Japanese previews, and note that Mario is not gold during Dodo's minigame.
    • Pages 72 and 73. Top left has Mario fighting King Bomb and Mezzo Bomb. Reacher or Juju is in Bowser's Keep. Left blurb seems to indicate that the scene with Luigi may have been for an alternate opening (or it could just be there to fill space). Early translations of the Minister of the Mushroom Kingdom and "Kinopeo" below. Two early screens of Yo'ster Isle are shown, possibly indicating it was planned to be bigger. Birdo's room looks different. The outside the castle looks different in the towers and on the ground (fuller screens in Japanese previews), town map should be inspected more closely with final.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (UK) Issue #40 (January 1996). Page 75. Interview. Best view of that weird Mario render, unobstructed view of Mario/Princess scene.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (UK) Issue #41 (February 1996). Pages 84 and 85. Alternate location translations (I kinda like Forest of Delusion) and descriptions. Arrangement of parachuting Spookums in the tower screenshot seems different. The menu screenshots seemingly demonstrating Rose Town's Item Shop is actually, weirdly enough, closer to Moleville's Item Shop, with Rose Town's Mushroom, Honey Syrup, Pick Me Up, and Able Juice. The Work Pants are being sold for a different amount. Equip does not seem to be on the shop menu, suggesting it was a late inclusion to streamline having to go right back into the menu. The bottom right screenshot of Greaper in battle shows the Deathsickle in the middle of animation while the attack name text is still displayed.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (UK) Issue #42 (March 1996). Page 95. Note that a UK release date is said to be July.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (UK) Issue #43 (April 1996). Pages 26 and 27. Bottom left red blurb mentions a rumor that the game was almost "recoded" for the US and European markets, whatever that means. Right has a muddy-looking Melody Bay, but it might just be photo quality, and right below that, it mentions a release planned for July.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (UK) Issue #45 (June 1996). Page 7. Breaking the news that Squaresoft apparently canceled the PAL release.
  • Nintendo Magazine System (AU) Issue #43 (October 1996). No obvious differences here, page 25 lists the release as "NTSC only".
  • In addition to the above, there are also at least two VHS videos worth checking out. I noted that the latter has an unfinished Yo'ster Isle background, different animated Wish Stars, some different Geno sprites, a different animation for Mallow's Snowy and Shocker moves, Drill Bits in Bowser's Keep, a different color for the big Mechakoopa in the Bowser Crush move, and Terrapins in the Forest Maze. The former has some of the same footage, but here's some highlights. Forest Maze was apparently called「まよいの森」(like Forest of Illusion), which explains a bit. Geno has some different sprites again. Knife Guy's tower room has Rob-ombs in it (and apparently, you can jump on him to get him to stop juggling?). In the room where Booster throws bombs, he has different text using another noise and, like the English release, no mention of his train's name. The Rose Town Item Shop (or some other shop) menu is once again different and sells items that aren't normally sold like the NokNok Shell and Jump Shoes. Marrymore has a near-final list so it looks like that area of the game had a lot of debugging/rebalancing. Also a different-colored suite. There seems to be a different Mallow wish scene in Star Hill. Yaridovich in the Bowser's Keep battle background, which aligns with the Drill Bits in the other video (note that the background may be a placeholder given how unique Yaridovich's final background is). And that's not even getting into these.

As much as I'd like to see much of this done before the remake is out, that's...not gonna happen. It is a lot, and I'd be grateful if others pitched in. LinkTheLefty (talk) 16:50, November 1, 2023 (EDT)

I can't really help with much of this (it gets too technical for me to follow), but one thing you could do is check out The Cutting Room Floor's page on this game's prerelease info. You could actually pitch in and add some of the screenshots you found (as they need more). It is a site dedicated to unused and prerelease things for video games, so you can see what they have there and ask around. If you get sufficient help, you could then use that to update this page. As a bonus, I'm sure The Cutting Room Floor would appreciate the screenshots! That's what I would do if I were you. I hope this helped! --   FanOfRosalina2007  (talk · edits) 16:55, November 20, 2023 (EST)
