For future reference, the NSMBW Prima guide doesn't mention the smog at all, while the NSMBU Prima guide mentions it twice: "A thick cloud of hazardous ash chases you throughout this hectic stage, so waste no time in dashing onto the capacity lift here," and "Hopefully that ash cloud isn’t too close—you still need to jump up and escape through the Warp Pipe above!"
