Mario and Dr. Mario: Same guy?[edit]

Do we know Dr. Mario is just Mario wearing a doctor suit? Maybe we do, just want to make sure. Sprite of the Ruby Star in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door CrystalYoshi Yoshi Egg Sprite.png

I'm pretty sure... I think this was directly stated in a Nintendo Comics System comic, and then there's the whole thing about Mario and Dr. Mario never showing up at the same time and all of that. Stumpers! 11:45, 3 February 2008 (EST)

That's true. Just seems a bit un-Mario-ish for him to be working as a doctor. But, maybe... Sprite of the Ruby Star in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door CrystalYoshi Yoshi Egg Sprite.png

"The Doctor is in... Over his Head" we have a plot synopsis for it if you want to look. Stumpers! 17:47, 3 February 2008 (EST)

Yes, he is the same guy. The following is an excerpt from the Dr. Mario NES manual (p. 3):

Hi everybody! I'm Mario. How's it going? Over the last few years, I've been involved in some pretty wild adventures. Now, believe it or not, I work in the virus research lab at the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital. Today I'm about to begin my research as usual.

Just wanted to note that. Time Questions 14:20, 4 February 2008 (EST)

Cool. So he's the same guy in multiple mediums. Thanks! Stumpers! 16:54, 4 February 2008 (EST)

gallery[edit]

should we create a gallery for dr.mario?

Merging[edit]

Should we just add this to the Mario article? IT IS THE SAME GUY! User:Mario freak

I agree on that. MarioManiac (talk)

No. Dr. Mario, despite being just an alter-ego, has his own large series and even was playable in one game. We even have a Featured Article that is about an alter-ego and stated alter-ego only appeared in one episode of the cartoon! FakeIco MCD.png MrConcreteDonkey 21:44, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Create a TPP about this subject, I would support it. Koopa K (talk)

Skin Color[edit]

I noticed that in SSBM he has a darker skin color.

So does Mario, and lots of other subjects look different than their core franchise depictions too. It's just a style thing. - Walkazo 13:15, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Ssbm art[edit]

The ssbm art of him should be added for his "Newer" look. --Goombob XD (talk) 18:51, 14 May 2013 (EDT)Goombob (I had to edit I forgot my signiture ;))

It should stay the way it is since it's a relatively modern picture of him, and the game it's from came after Super Smash Bros. Melee. Plus, it illustrates him better (the one from Super Smash Bros. Melee has a background).

(character)[edit]

Do we really need the "(character)" in the title? None of the characters have that in their article title. The plumber version of this guy is "Mario" not "Mario (character)". The guys that have their own series like Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Wario, their main pages are the characters. Why would we need this distinction for Dr. Mario? SeanWheeler (talk) 23:18, 19 December 2013 (EST)

Because "Dr. Mario" is also a video game. Zero777 (talk)
So is Donkey Kong and Yoshi. Yet those character articles are just plain Donkey Kong and Yoshi.
The preceding unsigned comment was added by SeanWheeler (talk).
Yes but Yoshi debuted before the Yoshi game, and Donkey Kong debuted after that game but under another name. While Dr. Mario appeared in his debuted game and its sequel but never in another game (I think). (Super Smash Bros. Melee is a crossover so it doesn't really count) Look I advise of, since you have some strong opinions about wanting this to change, why don't you start a proposal to rename the game "Dr. Mario (game)" and the character simply "Dr. Mario"? Zero777 (talk)
The game is already at Dr. Mario (game). The article named Dr. Mario is a disambiguation page. SeanWheeler (talk) 17:44, 20 December 2013 (EST)
Oh, well there you go, there's your reason. Zero777 (talk)
What was the reason? The disambiguation page? I think a character would deserve the plain title than the disambiguation page. Yoshi and Donkey Kong have their own disambiguation pages with "disambiguation" in the title. SeanWheeler (talk) 23:33, 20 December 2013 (EST)
Like I said, if you really wish to make a change, then I suggest to just make a Talk Page Proposal of the matter. Zero777 (talk)

Proposal: Move this page to just plain "Dr. Mario"[edit]

I feel that the "(character)" part is not needed. Other characters with their own series don't have "(character)" in their own page title. Examples include Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong and Wario. Blue Toad and Yellow Toad also have "(character)" in their titles, but I don't really think those are needed because they are disambiguating them from Super Mario Galaxy characters. But I guess there are some other characters that deserve to keep the "(character)" part in the title such as Butterfingers. However, Dr. Mario doesn't need the "(character)" in his name. People would think of Dr. Mario as Mario dressed as a doctor.

Support[edit]

  1. SeanWheeler (talk) Per proposal.
  2. SuperYoshiBros (talk) While I was originally going to oppose because it's the name of a character, game, and series, we do the same for Donkey Kong as well, so I'll support.
  3. Tails777 (talk) Yoshi and Donkey Kong have this issue and if they don't need the character in the article name, neither does Dr. Mario. Per proposal.
  4. KP (talk) Per all.
  5. Zero777 (talk) Per SeanWheeler and also in support due to the discussion we had above.
  6. Skittles (talk) Per all.
  7. LeftyGreenMario (talk) Good point. If Mario had a game called Mario, we wouldn't have an article called "Mario (character)", right?
  8. Randombob-omb4761 (talk) Per proposal.
  9. RandomDSplayer (talk) Per all.

Move to Dr. Mario (character)[edit]

do nothing 1-1-6
I tried to move this page to Dr. Mario (character), but it was reverted due to the above proposal. So I'm making a counterproposal. To start, the above proposal's reasoning is flawed. Dr. Mario is not a major character on par with regular Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong. He is a mere alter-ego most comparable to Paper Mario, who is also an alter-ego (of sorts) with a game and series named after him. Paper Mario only has an article due to his unique role in Paper Jam, in the same way that Dr. Mario has an article only because of his unique role in Smash. And Paper Mario still doesn't hold identifier priority like Dr. Mario does, and that is a problematic inconsistency that needs to be solved. There really isn't much to it. The other doctors also got their pages deleted due to having no unique roles, and Dr. Mario only holds a page due to being a separate fighter in Smash, so it makes little sense to prioritize him over the game following that as well. The above proposal was made five years ago, with no precedent; now, with the existence of Paper Mario (character) and the deletion of the other doctors, moving this page to an identifier seems like the most reasonable thing to do.

There will also be an option to give the disambig page identifier priority as well, in case my Paper Mario analogy happens to be flawed in some way and we decide that's the best thing to do.

Give the game identifier priority[edit]

  1. YoshiFlutterJump (talk) First choice, per proposal.

Give the disambig identifier priority[edit]

  1. YoshiFlutterJump (talk) I'm okay with this too.

Do nothing (leave identifier priority with the character)[edit]

  1. FanOfYoshi (talk) I am strongly opposed to this, as he is more notable than the game.
  2. Sdman213 (talk) Per Waluigi.
  3. Bazooka Mario (talk) Pretty sure at this point, more people search for the persona or the series (which already has an identifier) more than the specific first game in the series.
  4. MarioManiac1981 (talk) Per all.
  5. Obsessive Mario Fan (talk) Per all, especially Waluigi.
  6. Scrooge200 (talk) Per all.

Comments[edit]

I think I should clarify that, also following the deletion of the other doctors and for consistency with Paper Mario, I think that this page should also be purged of its Dr. Mario info. However, despite being on a similar basis, that is outside the scope of this proposal and is a matter for a proposal I plan to make later on. -YFJ (talk · edits) 14:02, July 24, 2019 (EDT)

Dr. Mario and Paper Mario aren't really comparable in that aspect. Dr. Mario is an alter-ego that Mario takes on in many games, while as far as we know, Paper Mario was always intended to be the Mario we see in all the other games before Paper Jam came out and complicated things by making him a distinct entity, and that's why only Paper Jam is covered on his page, and the same goes for all the other paper characters in Paper Jam. A more accurate comparison would be Mr. L or Rookie, and if they have pages I don't see why Dr. Mario doesn't deserve this. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! @FanOfYoshi and @Sdman, your oppose votes are invalid. Waluigi was responding to my comment about stuff that I was specifically saying was outside the scope of this proposal, while this proposal itself is merely about identifier priority (which he said nothing about). You can't just say the persona is more notable than the game, either; you have to provide a reason on why you think that. So please elaborate on your votes with reasons that are actually relevant to this. -YFJ (talk · edits) 23:21, July 24, 2019 (EDT)

@MarioManiac1981: I don't get your vote. Just because we have identifiers on the game and series already doesn't mean we automatically don't need one on the character. You should explain why you think the character should have identifier priority over the series or game. Or why we can't just give them all identifiers and put the disambig page at "Dr. Mario". Your oppose vote is invalid as-is. -YFJ (talk · edits) 15:35, July 27, 2019 (EDT)

For the record, as YoshiFlutterJump has pointed out, I don't actually oppose this proposal, and my comment was solely directed at the proposer's plans for the future, outside of the scope of this proposal. Arguments on both sides have been weak so far in my opinion, so I don't really have any thoughts on the proposal itself right now. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad!
