Just curious, but when was this the official name? .
As said in the article, Russ T. mentions about their "mysterious" origins of the species. If you played Paper Mario, and dug deep enough to read that line -- you'll know that's the real name.

But in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Wonky says they're called "Candy Pops". Shouldn't it mention its PMTTYD name?
