Depsite the other Fire Emblem characters having canonical surnames, we don't use them. RickTommy (talk) 05:27, January 17, 2020 (EST)

For context, Fire Emblem Wiki and SmashWiki call them just Byleth. Well, some source is still needed, but is good idea for consistentcy. Raffina Higashikata (talk) January 17, 2020

I was gonna say, I don't recall a surname anywhere in my playthrough at all. As far as I know, Byleth is just the default of whatever name you give her or him if you really don't want a free Sylvain. I could have missed something, however. I'm waiting for the final DLC before I get around to doing more routes. LinkTheLefty (talk) 07:01, January 17, 2020 (EST)
Fire Emblem Wiki does give a last name in the article itself, so I went off of that. We do use last names, though, see Terry Bogard, if they are available. I don't have Three Houses, so it's possible this is a complete mistake and I don't know it. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 14:59, January 17, 2020 (EST)
To add to this, when Sakurai mentions Terry, it's usually as Terry Bogard. In contrast, Byleth isn't mentioned with a last name, for example. LinkTheLefty (talk) 15:33, January 17, 2020 (EST)
I'm in my second play through of Three Houses and I believe the roster page for Byleth doesn't list their last name (granted that could just be because they're given a custom name, not sure). But in my first play through, I don't remember their last name being dropped and I certainly haven't seen it in the play through I'm in currently. I would support the idea of just referring to the page as Byleth, but that's just me. Hope that helped in any way. Sprite of Yoshi's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. I'll ask Fire Emblem Wiki people directly and see what's up, but yeah, that does help :) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:44, January 17, 2020 (EST)
If it helps, I played every routes of Three Houses, and there's not mention in-game where he/she is called "Byleth Eisner", it's only by the name "Byleth" or the name the player give to the character. Eisner is Jeralt's last name (Byleth's father). LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK)
Yeah, Fire Emblem Wiki tells me it's Jeralt's last name, so it'd be Byleth's as well through association.
As for every other Fire Emblem character, none of the other names are canonical afaik. Only Marth has ever been given one, and that was in the tv animation. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:55, January 17, 2020 (EST)
Support for moving. JoeRunner (talk and stuff) 18:14, January 17, 2020 (EST)
Regarding the Three Houses roster page, something of interest is how the game handles full names - according to TCRF, playable characters and major NPCs have each part of their name in separate strings, even if this is not seen during normal gameplay. What's relevant is that, despite some pieces like "von" being reused, Eisner is exclusively coded for Jeralt. This shows that as far as the developers are concerned, the avatar's name is entirely player choice (note that spaces are allowed), with just Byleth being the default label. Factor in that the origin of Eisner is (according to brief research) an occupational surname (Byleth was classed as a commoner, not a noble, and becomes an academy professor early in the story, unlike Jeralt), and as a medieval-style fantasy, Fire Emblem may not be entirely operating on modern naming conventions. I'd say that if "Byleth Eisner" doesn't at least show up in Wave 4 or Ultimate tips, the article title should definitely just be Byleth. LinkTheLefty (talk) 12:40, January 18, 2020 (EST)
Can I just move the page to Byleth?, because it doesnt say Eisner anywhere in the presentation or on the official Smash Ultimate website. FireyYoshi (talk)
I also support to move this page to "Byleth". LudwigVon Sig.png(TALK)
Support. We don't call "Mario" "Mario Mario", now do we?. Flogger (talk) 13:43, January 19, 2020 (EST)
I support the move. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 14:55, January 19, 2020 (EST)
Just moved the page. FireyYoshi (talk)
I'm late to this discussion, but Three Houses characters are the first characters in the Fire Emblem series to have last names in the first place. If you've heard Marth being referred to as "Lowell", that's from the OVA series they released decades ago. It's not canon. The game never uses Byleth's last name in-game because it's deliberately evasive about everything when it comes to them, even when it has no real reason to be. They have a canon age and birthday that has nothing to do with the birthday you give them in-game, yet their profile doesn't even update itself to reflect this. Jeralt's last name is Eisner and he's not an ironworker, so Byleth would have inherited it. In other words, Eisner is Jeralt's last name, and it must be an inherited name, so Byleth's last name is Eisner. There's no real reason not to mention it on the page. I suggested waiting for the DLC, but until it's directly shown in official capacity, a redirect is fine enough. Besides, last names are not used for every character in Three Houses - I can point to certain members of the Church of Seiros, for instance, and Byleth's connection to the organization.
