Full disclaimer: This proposal will, in the event actual evidence for Books being called "Cheato", be almost assuredly rendered moot. In the event proof of the "Cheato" name gets found before the proposal deadline, we'd be fine to end it early.
We promise to make this one simple (or at least, simple for our standards). Cheato redirects to Book, due to a claim added October 27th, 2014 that "Cheato" is their name in Japan. This is backed up by the presence of a character in Banjo Kazooie--a very similar-looking sentient book--also being named Cheato in English. However, 9 years on, and this claim is still uncited. The original edit that added this didn't include any references whatsoever, and in fact, in the time since the first edit that added this, a "Names in Other Languages" section was removed for lack of proper citationwork... yet, the redirect stands. What only serves to complicate matters is that Rip Cheato is a character in the first place, who is actually called Cheato.
So... Um... Are they called Cheato in Japan? Since the English site is the source of the original name, we figured we'd check the Japanese site in specific; and that's currently still up, so that's easy to check. Admittedly, our methodology as someone who doesn't speak Japanese basically amounted to "open every link and look for a book", and while there's a very real chance we missed a link somewhere, we couldn't find the Book anyways.
Until we can prove if this thing has ever been called Cheato in Japan, we have 3 real options here:
- Make "Cheato" redirect to "Rip Cheato": Odds are, an individual searching this name is looking for the character with Cheato as a last name.
- Delete "Cheato" as a redirect altogether: Exactly what it says on the tin. Obviously, if the name "Cheato" gets used for another character in the future--or if Cheato gets confirmed as a name for this thing--then we can remake this.
- Do nothing: This is a 9 year old redirect, is it really hurting anyone? ...I mean, we've deleted needless redirects with incorrect names before (hi, "God Slayer Bowser".), and while this is merely unproven rather than disproven, it's been 9 years. This is probably a cold case unless this proposal changes things, which to be honest, we actively welcome in this case.

Change to redirect to Rip CheatoEdit
- Camwoodstock (talk) This is our secondary option; while we feel like most people looking for Rip Cheato would just type "Rip Cheato", basically anything but redirecting to Book feels best, and if this redirect has to continue existing, we might as well point to him.
- Ray Trace (talk) Banjo Kazooie is only tangentially-related to Mario, and for Mario purposes, should not be referred to from a character that's not even a Mario character. In a Mario context, to me, Cheato reminds me of that Paper Mario character and is the character I'd be looking for if I'm searching for that name.
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Shorthand redirects are fine, though I find it hard to believe fat platypus man would be mixed up with fat mole-rat man even with their similar names.

Until the day comes we can prove for certain if this was a valid name, this really isn't helping anyone except the oddly specific demographic of people who have played Banjo Kazooie, have not played Donkey Kong 64, know of Cheato, are looking for this book enemy, and searched "Cheato" instead of both Book or the area it appears in. How often does this get used, anyways?

Just want to say that Rip Cheato is in the same game as Chet Rippo, and I have often issues remembering these two "cleverly" named characters individually so I sometimes search "Cheato".

- I mean, "Chet" doesn't really sound the same as "cheat", and Chet Rippo's got such a bizarre design in the first Paper Mario, and he's also easier to find than Rip Cheato, so that make it easy for me to remember him and differentiate from Rip Cheato.

- Admittedly, we are not particularly versed on the Deep Rareware Lore™
(which when my sona is a monkey, that feels like the last descriptor of us), but we don't think that Rare has ever acknowledged these guys in the least. You could probably try and ask someone who was an ex-Rare employee on Twitter about it, but we get the feeling they either won't have an answer, or will be like "we just didn't think that hard about it." ...Though, the revelation that the only actual Japanese text that describes this thing literally is just, hon, for "Book", makes this a pretty open-and-shut (hah) case that the Cheato name was probably some fabrication, unless they decide to have a conflicting name in another guidebook, and that name just so happens to be Cheato's Japanese name. ;P ~Camwoodstock (talk) 12:51, December 9, 2023 (EST)
