Should articles for Standard bikes and Sport bikes be created?

Since Mario Kart 8, there is a clear distinction between Standard bikes and Sport bikes, both in the game's menu (they have different icons) and in gameplay (they clearly play very differently both in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8, to the point that exploits that worked with outside drifting vehicles in the latter game don't work at all with Sport bikes). Since both types now also have an official English name, should we consider creating separate pages for both?

As a further question, the PRIMA guide of Mario Kart 8 doesn't use the inside drifting term at all, and the Nintendo Official Guidebook of Mario Kart Wii uses the drift type (「ドリフトタイプ」) term for outside drifting vehicles and the hang-on type (「ハングオンタイプ」) term for inside drifting vehicles, which effectively better reflect the fact that inside drifting vehicles don't drift at all, rather lean toward the inside of the turn. Could someone with the PRIMA guide of Mario Kart Wii check if outside drifting and inside drifting are stemming from there or if they are completely made up by the competitive Mario Kart community?--Mister Wu (talk) 10:45, 30 January 2018 (EST)

You should ask the same for the karts and ATVs first. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 12:52, 30 January 2018 (EST)
I think you're missing the point. Karts and ATVs are already covered on separate pages on the wiki, what I'm talking about is that standard bikes and sport bikes don't have separate articles despite now being distinguished on all levels since Mario Kart 8 (and from a gameplay point of view since Mario Kart Wii).--Mister Wu (talk) 13:19, 30 January 2018 (EST)
Also, Karts and ATVs don't have this sort of distinction between them. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:22, 30 January 2018 (EST)
We could keep the general bike page and create a page on Standard and Sport bikes as "subspecies" of bikes that specifies their differences. BabyLuigiFire.png Ray Trace(T|C) 14:15, 30 January 2018 (EST)
That's indeed what I had in mind, and I wanted to know if you think it's a good idea or not.--Mister Wu (talk) 19:42, 30 January 2018 (EST)

I got the PRIMA guide of Mario Kart Wii and, as expected, it doesn't mention inside drifting or outside drifting at all. It just mentions bikes and uses the generic term drifting in all cases. As a short summary:

  • Since Mario Kart Wii the Nintendo Official Guidebooks distinguished between vehicles that drift (「ドリフトタイプ」, drift type) and vehicles that commit to the turn (「ハングオンタイプ」, hang-on type)
  • The PRIMA Mario Kart Wii guide just mentions bikes and the drifts you do with them without specifying the differences - just like the game UI does
  • The PRIMA Mario Kart 8 guide on the other hand clearly distinguishes between Standard and Sport Bikes - just like the game UI does - and states that the former drift, while the latter commit to the turn

I therefore think that we should keep this page while also creating separate pages for Sport Bikes and Standard Bikes, now that they are officially disitnguished also in North American official material - and in the games' UI. I also think that we should use the terms drifting and commiting to the turn in place of the unofficial and inappropriate outside drifting and inside drifting terms, which would be mentioned the first time those two terms are introduced (e.g. Sport Bikes are peculiar because they commit to the turn, an action commonly and improperly referred to as inside drifting). I would like to know your opinion on the matter.--Mister Wu (talk) 07:05, 5 April 2018 (EDT)

Create the Standard bike (vehicle class) and Sport bike (vehicle class) pages and limit the use of the unofficial inside drifting and outside drifting terms

Create pages for the Standard bike and Sport bike vehicle classes and limit the use of the unofficial inside drifting and outside drifting terms 7-0-0-0
From my points above, you can see how since Mario Kart 8 bikes are officially split into sport bikes and standard bikes not only from a gameplay point of view, but also from a game UI point of view, with the PRIMA guide now officially naming both vehicle classes and describing the main difference between them. I therefore propose to create separate pages for them, leaving this as an overview page (which it pretty much already is).

The PRIMA guide and the Nintendo Official Guidebook of Mario Kart Wii, as well as the PRIMA guide of Mario Kart 8, also revealed that inside drifting and outside drifting were never official terms - after all the sport bikes do not drift at all, they commit to the turn when holding the jump button. Since those terms are popular but incorrect in describing the behavior of those vehicles, I also propose to replace them with the proper terms that describe what they actually do - drifting and commiting to the turn -, leaving just a single reference to those community-made terms in this page (and the Standard bike (vehicle class) and Sport bike (vehicle class) pages, should they be created).

If the "restrict the term inside/outside drifting" clause pass, then shouldn't the terms be added to the list of frequently misused terms? Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 20:12, 10 April 2018 (EDT)

I'm not sure, as even though they are popular in the Mario Kart community due to the success of Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, in this wiki those terms are used only in relation to said games. Much depends on their future use by unaware editors, should this part of the proposal pass.--Mister Wu (talk) 20:31, 10 April 2018 (EDT)
