Would it be too much of a stretch to say that he may have been intended as a counterpart or at the very least a reference to the original Donkey Kong? Think about it: He's the first foe Mario faces, he harrasses a girl at a construction site, and by the end, he's a wild ape, at said construction site. Yes, apparently it seems so,There's a super Mario Bros o Movie the archive website that says this:

But I thought he would be Wario or even Foreman Spike lol

- I would not put too much stock on smbmovie.com as a reference outside of their hosting of primary source materials. It is still a fansite and the owners use mariowiki as a source, which leads to circular reporting. The used old, erroneous mariowiki edits as a source, which then led to editors here to cite that as a source, a terrible death-spiral of fake info.--Platform (talk) 11:03, June 10, 2023 (EDT)
