Spikeys are common enemies appearing in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Much like Spinies, they have red spiked shells and are sometimes dropped down at Mario by Lakitus. They are encountered in Mushroom Way, Bandit's Way, the Pipe Vault, and Booster Pass.

Spikeys also have stronger green-shelled and purple-shelled counterparts known as Spikesters and Oerlikons. The former is present only in Booster Pass, whereas the latter appears in both Barrel Volcano and Bowser's Keep. Additionally, Spikeys have an unused sub-species known as Super Spike.

Spikeys first appear in the last section of Mushroom Way, dropped by a Lakitu hovering overhead. This Lakitu continues to drop Spikeys until there are about four on the ground, and spawns more of them as they are defeated. Once dropped to the ground, a Spikey wanders around the area until it bumps into Mario, beginning a battle. A couple of Spikeys hide behind bushes to ambush Mario as he walks by. If they miss, they return into hiding, waiting for their next opportunity. The Spikeys that appear in Bandit's Way are more aggressive, attacking Mario on sight and actively pursuing him in the event they miss.

In battle, Spikeys attack by rolling up into a spiked ball before striking. They can also shoot a spike at its target, causing 50% more damage than usual. Mario cannot jump on a Spikey unless he is wearing a pair of Jump Shoes. Although Mario is not hurt by its spikes, no damage is inflicted upon the Spikey.

Spikeys often attack in groups of two or three, and are sometimes accompanied in battle by either a Sky Troopa or Frogog. In Bandit's Way, they also appear alongside Goombas and K-9s. In addition to being regular enemies in the Pipe Vault, they also appear during the Goomba thumping game. Mario loses a point each time he jumps on one.

Spikeys are last encountered in Booster Pass, serving as obstacles within the level's hidden obstacle course, which can only be accessed after pressing a certain switch in Booster Tower. The obstacle course serves as a training ground for Booster's Apprentices. After Mario unlocks this area, he may jump over the Spikeys to reach a trio of treasure boxes. Mario may also choose to battle the Spikeys, though these particular ones always fight in pairs, alongside another Spikey or a Sky Troopa.
