Simian Shimmy, named Tree in the Time Attack mode, is the twenty-third level in Donkey Kong Land III and the fifth level of Great Ape Lakes, where it is located in the eastern woods region. This level takes place in a forest of giant hollow trees, inhabited by gruff Minkys, Sneeks and Buzzes. Just like Minky Mischief and Redwood Rampage, the level is labyrinthine and filled with many different pathways that Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong can take through the trees. As the Kongs go through the level, they must climb ropes and leap from bark platforms and gnarled branches. Arrow-shaped bananas indicate the main path but there are Barrel Cannons in several alternate paths. There are a couple of Barrel Shields that help the Kongs dodge the Minkys' acorns. Simian Shimmy is one of the twelve levels in the Time Attack mode, where it has to be completed in 1 minute and 22 seconds, and shortcuts of hidden Barrel Cannons are vital to complete the level on time.

LayoutEdit

When the level begins, the apes walk across a few branches to reach another tree. Hopping up a few platforms, they enter a small opening to find the outside of the two trees. After jumping up the branches in that area, they can find another long area inside the second tree trunk. Continually hopping up the platforms in this tree, they can use a few Nids to help them bounce to the next outside area, where they start to climb up a few branches again. Grabbing the letter K on the top branch, they can find another crossing between two trees. Making their way to the next tree, they need to fall down some platforms and exit the trunk to find an area full of more branches. Climbing down the area and avoiding Buzzes, they enter a tree trunk with a long rope going down it. A few Minkys are on the way down the rope, and the apes head to the left to get in another tree once they are passed. Hopping up more platforms and crossing into the next tree trunk, the heroes soon make their way down to the Star Barrel.

About halfway through the level, the apes travel up the first trunk in their path and jump along some branches to find the entrance to the next tree. Inside, they climb up a long rope while dodging Minkys. A Barrel Shield can be used here to help the Kongs. At the top of this area, the heroes walk along more branches, jumping over a Buzz, to find the next tree. At the top of this tree, they find the letter N and the short pathway across a tree, leading to another tree trunk. There is a rope to climb down inside this area, and Minkys interfere with the Kongs' progress as they make their way down. At the bottom of this area, they cross into another tree and drop down some more platforms and branches to find the next tree. This tree, as any other trees, has a long rope going down from it. With the help of some Barrel Shields, the group should be able to travel all the way up the rope, avoiding several Minkys. Entering the outside of the trunk, the apes leap up a few more branches to find the letter G and make their way into another area of the tree. They can find the End of Level Flag there.

The Koin of Simian Shimmy

The Steel Barrel is beneath a Niknak that the Kongs must jump from to reach the second Bonus Barrel. Dixie or Kiddy must pick up the Steel Barrel and drop into a gap below. The active Kong lands into an area below with the Koin. They must throw the Steel Barrel at the wall to the left for it to bounce back into Koin, which defeats him and gives the DK Coin to the Kongs. The Kongs can enter a Barrel Cannon to the left to blast back up to the main path.

The second Bonus Level of Simian Shimmy

Simian Shimmy has two Bonus Levels, listed by type:

  • Collect the Stars!: When the Kongs reach a Booty Bird with the letter O, they must bounce on the enemy to enter a hidden Barrel Cannon, which blasts them northeast on a branch. The Kongs must jump up back and forth between a few more branches to enter a Bonus Barrel at top. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must collect 27 stars within 20 seconds. The stars are in groups of three strung along two hollow trees. The heroes must ascend the first tree with Nids, walk on a branch connecting the trees at the top, and descend a rope in the second tree to reach the end. The Bonus Coin appears at the end once every star is collected.
  • Find the Token!: The second Bonus Barrel is reached in a similar way to the first. Shortly after the letter N, the Kongs must bounce on a Niknak and jump from a few branches to reach a Bonus Barrel at the top. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs have forty seconds to find the Bonus Coin. They must climb up some ropes and jump from some branches while following a trail of bananas to find the Bonus Coin at the end. Following the banana trail will lead to the Bonus Coin.
