The new Main Page design now has dynamic sections with the raw text in templates. Certain rules are required for updating each template and are listed here – most sections will update based on when information is available.

There are 7 templates in all; the 5 that need to be updated are in their own sections.

If you are interested in helping us often in this aspect, please go to the talk page for sign-up.

Finally, it is assumed that all templates with bullet points for info should contain around ¾-1½ lines per bullet point.

{{Featured}}

Featured articles are to be rotated every Saturday.

Main page rotation (within the next 3 weeks)

For the complete list of featured articles for rotation, go here. Also, articles which most recently became a featured article are to take precedence, before following the regular rotation down the featured list.

{{Proposal}}

About every 4-6 days, a new active proposal that was recently created (so it will last 4-6 days on the Main Page) needs to replace the old one. If the description is short enough, post it in full, but most likely you'll have to truncate it with a piped link of

'''[[MarioWiki:Proposals#''Section Name''|(more...)]]'''

Proposer & Deadline are required in full.

{{News}}

This is the raw text for Mario & Nintendo news. In 3 lines, the info should be about a mix of the following:

  • new developments & details for upcoming games
  • release dates
  • new games just heard about
  • announcement that a game has just come out

however, it is NOT:

  • a place for every Smashbros.com update. Please only include major updates (i.e. a newcomer or something to do with the Mario series). If you're not sure if a particular update is worthy, ask at the talk page here (not Template talk:News) first.

The first line of info should be accompanied with an image, no bigger than 100px thumbnailed. Please link and bold bold the character or game relating to the subject of each line, so guests & users alike are attracted to see more information in the article itself.

Whenever a worthy piece of news is revealed, it should replace an older piece asap.

{{Recently}}

This is similar to News, but for Wiki news. This time it should be a mix of:

  • new statistical milestones
  • user promotion(s)
  • new major PipeProject(s)
  • major change(s) or addition(s), possibly as a result of proposal(s)

NOT:

  • newest user
  • user of the month

This can also be updated at will when any of these occur. No images, however.

{{DidYouKnow}}

This is the hardest template to update – it consists of three interesting facts from the current week's new articles. These facts should be from a variety of series (i.e. not every fact should be from the Donkey Kong Country series or Super Smash Bros. series). Additionally, the new article should not be about a subject from an unreleased game, as these articles are filled with speculation. The subject of each fact needs to be bolded and linked like News. The updater will have to look through this week's new articles every Saturday to find the facts (DPL code: credit to Wayoshi (talk)):

<DPL> namespace= notuses=Template:Newsubject ordermethod=firstedit order=descending firstrevisionsince=200801130400 addauthor=true addeditdate=true replaceintitle=/ /,_ format= ²{scroll box|content=\n«span style="font-size:110%"»New Articles Since 9/21 & On«/span»\n\n,:«span style="font-size:95%" class="plainlinks"»%PAGE% · «span style="font-size:90%"»at %DATE% by ²{user|%USER%}²«/span» (original text)«/span»,\n,\n}² </DPL>

After the template has been updated for the week, the DPL code will be changed to reflect the upcoming week.

{{Affiliates}} and {{RandomQuote}}

These templates are the 2 that need not be updated.

Affiliates will be updated by a bureaucrat when one needs to be added or deleted – though either case is rare.

RandomQuote produces a random usage of {{quote}}, from all the options shown at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Quote. It combines the DPL and RandomSelection extensions, and was coded by Wayoshi (talk) as well.
