“If you run and then press Z right before a jump, you'll do a long jump! Try it! It feels pretty great!”

The Long Jump (called Leap on the official Super Mario 3D Land website[1]) is a special move that has debuted in Super Mario 64. Since then, it has reappeared in almost all 3D Mario games: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World, and it is set to appear in Super Mario Odyssey.[2] It also appears in Donkey Kong 64 and Super Mario Run. The move is absent from Super Mario Sunshine due to the presence of F.L.U.D.D. and the Hover Nozzle. To use this move, the player usually must Crouch while in motion and Jump, causing the character to jump a long horizontal distance. The move is primary used to clear huge gaps between platforms and move faster; this is especially helpful in timed missions.

There is also a variation of Long Jump called the Double Kick, and can be done in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. This move can defeat enemies and activate items.

Mario (all), Luigi (all, since Super Mario 64 DS), Yoshi (Super Mario 64 DS), Wario (Super Mario 64 DS), Toad (Super Mario 3D World), Princess Peach (Super Mario 3D World), and Rosalina (Super Mario 3D World) can perform this move.

In Super Mario Run, characters will Long Jump if the screen is tapped while they are on a Long Jump Block.
