This is a list of pre-release and unused content for the game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Early ideas

Peach and Daisy were originally going to have swimsuits for the aquatic events rather than using their athletic wear as they do in the final game. However, the idea was rejected by Nintendo. Eventually, Peach and Daisy, as well as Amy and Blaze were given swimsuits in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, with more of the game's cast receiving swimwear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.[1]

Unused Characters

Birdo, Donkey Kong, Silver, Jet, Shy Guy, Toad, Lakitu, Charmy, Espio, Cream, Boo, Bullet Bill, Goomba, Egg Pawn, Egg Flapper, Kiki, Rouge and Big all have data to be playable characters in the game, while its unknown if they were planned to be or not. Although, some character models will load properly while others won't (i.e. Birdo's model wasn't finished properly, as her nose is inverted. Likewise, some will prep for the 100m dash, while some will just T-pose). Furthermore, only select games are actually playable with a few of the non original 16 characters, while others result in the game softlocking.

While these characters aren't playable in the final game, Donkey Kong and Silver would later appear as playable characters in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Birdo, Jet, Toad, Espio, Cream, and Rouge later appeared as guest playable characters in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with Birdo and Cream being exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version and Toad in the Wii U version. Egg Pawns also appear in the 3DS version as teammates for Jet and Shadow in Football and Football Plus, and in the Wii U version as a selectable set of three extra team mates for Rugby Sevens and Duel Rugby Sevens.
