Paratroopa, Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Koopa Paratroopas (also known as Para-Koopas, Sky Troopas in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, or simply Paratroopas) are winged Koopa Troopas. They lose their wings when they are attacked in the air, such as getting stomped or hurt by fireballs, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas. Typically, Koopa Paratroopas are placed in large gaps where Mario and Luigi must stomp on rows of them to traverse a pit or reap other rewards. They traditionally come in two varieties: Red Koopa Paratroopas usually fly up and down in a set path, while Green Koopa Paratroopas often bounce in the player's general direction or fly back and forth, although many exceptions have been made of these rules. Red Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-3 of Super Mario Bros., while the green ones first appear in World 2-1 of the same game. Koopa Paratroopas have also appeared as playable characters in various spin-off installments, occasionally even appearing without a normal Koopa Troopa as a playable character. Their name comes from "paratrooper," a term used in the military to describe soldiers who parachute down to attack.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros.

Koopa Paratroopas debut in Super Mario Bros., counting their remakes and ports (including Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Super Mario All-Stars), behaving as flying Koopa Troopas. They lose their wings and turn into normal Koopa Troopas if Mario or Luigi jump on them. They have two different attack patterns: green Paratroopas fly left and right or bounce around, and red Paratroopas fly up and down. In this game, red Koopa Paratroops first appear in World 1-3 while green varieties first appear in World 2-1.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Koopa Paratroopas are a very common enemy, and in some levels even more common than Koopa Troopas or Goombas. Their attack pattern is different than in the original Super Mario Bros., as both colors can jump up and down and fly rather than behavior being tied to a specific color. They also appear in certain water levels, where they cannot be stomped. In this game, Koopa Paratroopas first appear in World 1-1, one of the first enemies encountered.

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

While Koopa Paratroopas do appear in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its remake, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, they are not very common, unlike in most other 2D sidescrolling games. They act as they did in Super Mario Bros., and their first appearance is in World 1-6 of the Grass Land. In Giant Land, Colossal Koopa Paratroopas replace regular Koopa Paratroopas, but they do not act any differently than regular Koopa Paratroopas. Additionally, an item called the P-Wing, meaning "Paratroopa's Wing", allows Mario or Luigi to fly indefinitely.

Super Mario World / Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2

File:Paratroopa Look SMW.png
Artwork of a Koopa Paratroopa from Super Mario World.

Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Super Mario World and its remake, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, also having the updated design of the Koopa Troopas, as they now bipedal rather than quadrupedal. In this game, many of them are capable of flight instead of simply hopping, including all red varieties and certain green Paratroopas. They still lose their wings when jumped on by Mario or Luigi. If Mario or Luigi jumps on them while riding Yoshi, they are defeated in a single stomp. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in Yoshi's Island 3. When players unlock Fall, all Koopas wear Mario masks rather than shells; this includes Paratroopas, who become Para Mask Koopas.

Green-shelled Paratroopas either jump in one direction, some jumping higher than others, or fly in one direction, while the red-shelled Paratroopas fly back and forth horizontally or vertically. Even though blue-shelled Koopas and yellow-shelled Koopas are introduced in this game, only the yellow-shelled Koopas have a Paratroopa variant. Yellow-shelled Paratroopas act like regular Koopas, but they chase after Mario and jump over any shells that are in their way. Jumping on them gets rid of their wings and turn them into regular yellow-shelled Koopas. Yellow-shelled Paratroopas only appear in the Special World levels Awesome and Funky, making them very rare enemies.

New Super Mario Bros.

Koopa Paratroopas make an appearance as a common enemy in New Super Mario Bros., reprising their general role and attack pattern from the previous Mario platforming games. Unlike in Super Mario Bros., both colors (red and green) can bounce towards players, in addition to their flying abilities. Unlike Koopa Troopas, they do not move to the music. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in World 1-3, the first athletic level of the game.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Two types of Koopa Paratroopas from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Paratroopas reappear in the successor of New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Here, they have the same attack pattern as the previous games. Unlike its predecessor, the Paratroopas move to the music while flying. Like the predecessor, only green and red Paratroopas appear. However, unlike in Super Mario World, whenever Yoshi jumps on a Koopa Paratroopa, it simply loses its wings, instead of being defeated instantly, but a ground pound instantly defeats it. Koopa Paratroopas appear later than they do in New Super Mario Bros., first appearing in World 1-5.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Artwork of a Golden Koopa Paratroopa from New Super Mario Bros. 2

Paratroopas reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, acting the same as in previous games. Green Paratroopas are more common in this game, as they can now travel in circles and not just horizontal or vertical lines, as red ones only appear in a few levels. As in most sidescrolling platformers, they make their first appearance in the first athletic level of the game, being World 1-3.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U

Both Red and Green Paratroopas reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U and its expansion, New Super Luigi U, acting the same as in previous games. They appear much later than they normally do, making their first appearance in World 2 of the game, Layer Cake Desert, in the first level, Stone-Eye Zone. In New Super Luigi U, they first appear much later in the game, in Soda Jungle's Dancing Blocks, Poison Swamp.

Super Mario 3D World

While Paratroopas don't appear in Super Mario 3D World, a dry version is introduced. They are the only flying sub-species of Koopa Troopa to appear in a 3D platformer, even before the standard Paratroopa. Unlike Paratroopas, their wings also reassemble after they get hit, like their other counterparts, the Dry Bones.

Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!

A Paratroopa appears when Mario, Luigi, and Kibidango get captured by her so she can feed her babies. However, the Paratroopa's intention was to feed the chick instead of being an enemy to the hostages.

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Koopa Paratroopas make only two appearances, in the episodes "King Mario of Cramalot" and "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers". In "King Mario of Cramalot", they drop a net on top of Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Toadstool and Mervin the Magician. The Koopa Paratroopas are based off the show's Koopa Troopa design, except that they are depicted in shades of red while having wings similar to a bee's, rather than their usual feathered ones. Much like the Koopa Troopas that appeared in that same episode, the Koopa Paratroopas are dressed up as knights to fit the medieval setting of Cramalot. In "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers", when the Koopa Troopas are shrunk, one that is jumping has a pair of wings.

Additionally, in "Flatbush Koopa", after falling off a roller coaster and into Lower New York Bay, a Koopa Troopa mutters that he wishes that he had joined the Paratroopas, claiming that they have received parachutes.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

Koopa Paratroopas have a very brief cameo in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Do the Koopa", where several of them can be seen dancing along with a few Paragoombas in the Doomship's cargo hold. Unlike the Koopa Paratroopas from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, these ones are redesigned to better resemble their in-game counterparts. Standard Koopa Troopas never appear on the show.

Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land

In the interactive OVA Super Mario World: Mario to Yoshi no Bōken Land, after Iggy's horde of Koopa Troopas, Rexes, and Chargin' Chucks is defeated by Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, he summons a group of Koopa Paratroopas and Monty Moles. They are quickly disposed of when Yoshi swallows a Green Shell and breathes fire on them.

Club Nintendo

A Koopa Paratroopa also appear in the Club Nintendo comic "Marios Rückkehr" where it collides with Raccoon Mario, causing him to turn to normal Mario.

Nintendo Adventure Books

Luigi can fight some Koopa Paratroopas while ascending a flight of stairs (which lead to Wendy O. Koopa's secret camp) in the Magma Pits in Koopa Capers.

Super Mario Adventures

Koopa Paratroopas make a few appearances throughout Super Mario Adventures. A few green and red ones can be seen in the onslaught at the beginning of the story. Later, after recapturing Princess Peach, Bowser sends some Paratroopas, mostly red and green ones, to attack the Mario Bros. (Luigi curiously mistakes them for Mechakoopas.) Mario manages to fight off the Paratroopas while Yoshi eats them until he eats a blue Koopa Troopa and gains wings.

Yoshi's Safari

Sprite of a green Koopa Para Troopa from Yoshi's Safari

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Yoshi's Safari and approach the player in groups, hovering up and down a bit as they move closer to the screen. Koopa Paratroopas can be taken down with one shot from the Super Scope and the player earns 150 points (300 in Hard Mode). Koopa Paratroopas come in four colors - green, yellow, blue, and pink - but their behavior is the same. There is a discrepancy on the box art, where they are depicted as barefooted, but have shoes in-game.

Hotel Mario

Paratroopas, known as Flying Koopas, make an appearance in Hotel Mario. They are introduced in Lemmy's High-ate Regency Hotel, and fly in a diagonal motion. Unlike Banzai Bills, they bounce off the edge of the screen, making them somewhat aggressive foes. They have a tougher variation called the Z Koopa.

Game & Watch Gallery 2

Koopa Paratroopas appear as enemies in Game & Watch Gallery 2 in some of the games featured in it, specifically in their modern iterations. In Helmet, in the first area, players need to dodge a Paratroopa throwing hammers, spiked balls, and Podoboos at the player. In Vermin, a Orange Yoshi is defending Yoshi Eggs from invasive enemies, with one of those enemies being Paratroopas. Paratroopas, alongside Koopa Troopas, make an appearance as enemies in Donkey Kong.

Yoshi series

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Chronologically, Paratroopa's first appearance is in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, though they are called Para-Koopas[1]. They are basic enemies in this game, alongside the Koopa Troopas, and they both first appear in the level Visit Koopa And Para-Koopa. There are two varieties: red and green-shelled. As in Super Mario World, the red variety flies back and forth on a set path, while the green ones can only hop towards the player. As in other games, stomping on them causes their wings to fall off and turns them into regular Koopa Troopas. Yoshis cannot swallow Parakoopas, but like regular Koopas, they can spit them back out to make them slide across the ground in their shells, defeating enemies in their path. Eating them also makes them lose their wings. Paratroopas are very common in this game, sometimes even more common than Koopa Troopas.

Yoshi's Island DS

Paratroopas reappear in Yoshi's Island DS, where they act as a common enemy along with the Koopa Troopas. As in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, they exist in two different colors and attack in the same way they did in that game. In the Island Museum, Paratroopas appear in the Ground Exhibit, the same area where the Koopas appear in. Their appearance is similar to that of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but they possess a much lighter outline and they are slightly larger. The level icon for Rock 'n' Fall features a Paratroopa, which is additionally the first level they appear in.

Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Yoshi's Woolly World and its port Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. When they are hit by a yarn ball, they become Koopa Troopas just as in previous games; they first appear in Knot-Wing the Koopa's Fort. Knot-Wing the Koopa is a boss which appears several times throughout Yoshi's Woolly World. Knot-Wing has the appearance of a large Koopa Paratroopa—however, he has the ability to regain his wings after losing them.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Koopa Paratroopas appear Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, where they go under the name of Sky Troopas. They appear in the levels Mushroom Way, Bandit's Way, and Booster Pass. In this game, all Sky Troopas have red shells and do not lose their wings when hit. These shells give Sky Troopas a high defense rating compared to other enemies fought early in the game. Additionally, Sky Troopas use their shells for offense. To attack, they hide in their shells and then ram into their opponent.

In Mushroom Way, some Sky Troopas guard Treasure Boxes while others actively pursue Mario. One Sky Troopa even kidnaps Toad. In battle, Sky Troopas either fight alone or in pairs. At Mushroom Way and in Booster Pass, Sky Troopas also aid Spikeys in battle if the Spikeys are attacked. Four Sky Troopas can be fought in Bandit's Way while Mario chases Croco through the last area of the level. They fly high in the sky and do not actively pursue Mario, therefore he has to jump if he wants to fight them. After Croco is defeated, these Sky Troopas disappear and do not return for the rest of the game.

One prominent Sky Troopa featured in the game is Sergeant Flutter, a reformed Koopa who leads a large squad of friendly Sky Troopas. These Sky Troopas help out Mario in his quest for the Star Pieces at the behest of Monstermama, the leader of Monstro Town. These Sky Troopas assist Mario in ascending the steep cliff located at the end of Land's End, allowing him to reach Bean Valley and eventually Nimbus Land. Mario accomplishes this by jumping from Sky Troopa to Sky Troopa, each Troopa carrying Mario higher into the air and into closer proximity to the next Troopa. If Mario scales the cliff quickly by bypassing the normal sequence of Sky Troopa hops, he is rewarded with prizes.

The Sky Troopa has a bulky relative called a Heavy Troopa, which in turn are related to the Tub-O-Troopas. Sky Troopas also have stronger relatives called Malakoopas. These Paratroopas have a green shell instead of a red shell. Standard Koopa Troopas are absent from the game.

Mario Tennis series

Koopa Paratroopa
Paratroopa in Mario Power Tennis.

Paratroopa has been a playable character in some games of the Mario Tennis series. Its first playable role was in the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Tennis. Here, Paratroopa is classified as a Tricky character, meaning that its shots have a high curve and spin to them to mess up opponents. However, Paratroopa serves from low reach, which means that it has trouble reaching balls. When Paratroopa loses, it loses its wings and becomes a normal Koopa Troopa. In the game's intro, Paratroopa participates in the tournament and loses to Luigi, allowing him to advance to a semi-finals match against Princess Peach.

Paratroopa returns as an unlockable technique player in the sequel, Mario Power Tennis, changing from its original typing. Instead, Paratroopa relies on hitting the ball with more accuracy and control. Paratroopa is moderately fast with the longest lunge in the game; however, it suffers from very low reach as it had in the Nintendo 64 iteration of the game. Its offensive Power Shot is Energy Ball, which creates a large lob and tornado around the opponent who hits it, causing the opponent to spin out of control; this Power Shot is also able to catch lobs, unlike most Power Shots. Sky Dive is its defensive Power Shot, where it flies up into the sky and crash lands towards where the ball is. Paratroopa is unlocked when players clear all World Open cups in Doubles. Paratroopa makes an appearance on the last, Star tournament cleared blooper reel in the credits, where it accidentally wanders onto the scene, causing Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser to look at it; this causes all characters on the scene to start laughing after they have realized what happened.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Paratroopas make their second RPG appearance in Paper Mario. The Paratroopas and Koopas of this game wear sunglasses, which separates them from the Koopas who help Mario; additionally all opponent Paratroopas have red shells. This feature is carried on into the later two installments. They are found in Pleasant Path and usually attempt to Shell Shot Mario when he approaches, as their First Strike and also their primary attack. In-battle, they are immune to Hammer attacks, but are weak to Jump attacks; jumping on them causes them to lose their wings and become normal Koopa Troopas. A Paratroopa mail person named Parakarry is also one of Mario's partners in this game. His special ability is that he can carry Mario across small gaps. Dark Paratroopa, a variant of the Dark Koopa, is an unused enemy that has stats and an unused Goombario tattle.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Paper Mario's sequel, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. They are first seen in Hooktail Castle, where they still attempt to Shell Shot Mario if he approaches nearby. Paratroopas retain the same battle style and statistics they have in Paper Mario, except that they now do two damage, instead of one. The Paratroopas of this game also wear sunglasses. Additionally, Parakarry makes a cameo in this game. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door introduces the Paratroopa variants, KP Paratroopa, Shady Paratroopa, and the now-used Dark Paratroopa, all which have the same attack patterns as a regular Paratroopa.

Super Paper Mario

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Paper Mario. They act as a common enemy and retain the same role they have had in all platformers, while looking the same as their Paper Mario relatives. Their movement pattern differs, depending on its color. Green ones hop around on the ground, while red ones fly in the air in straight lines, horizontally as well as vertically. They appear in Chapter 1-2, 2-1, 3-3 and Rooms 11 and 46 in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

ParatroopaPMSS.png

Red Koopa Paratroopas appear in Paper Mario: Sticker Star as enemies. Koopa Paratroopas don't wear sunglasses and their appearance is different from the previous Paper Mario games. They appear in World 2 and retain the same attack pattern from previous Paper Mario titles, though their shell shot can now make Mario dizzy, including first strikes. If Mario use a First Strike or jump type sticker, its wings will be removed, and its attack pattern becomes identical to that of Koopa Troopas. A Paratroopa Squad appears and ambushes Mario at the end of Yoshi Sphinx. During this fight, the Paratroopas speak as if they were fighter pilots using comms systems, including using the words "Over" after their commands. They have four times HP than their other guards. A variant of the Paratroopa, the Shiny Koopa Paratroopa, also appear in the game.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Red Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Paper Mario: Color Splash with the same appearance and behavior as the previous game. They appear in Daffodil Peak, The Crimson Tower, and Sunset Express. In Dark Bloo Inn, one, referred to as a "red bird", appears as a Ghost Toad's pet, and Mario has to get it to go back into its cage. Koopa Paratroopa 10-Stacks appear on the Sunset Express. In battle, Koopa Paratroopas attack by going into their shells and flying at Mario, similar to their shell shot technique from earlier iterations. When they are attacked, they lose their wings and become normal red Koopa Troopas.

Mario Kart series

Like its partner, it has Triple Red Shells and Triple Green Shells as a special item. Its personal kart is the Para-Wing, which has very high acceleration, but low top speed and weight, which is typical of lightweight characters.

Mario Kart Wii

Paratroopa was originally going to reappear in Mario Kart Wii as a playable racer, as there is an image of it for the game's character select screen, along with Petey Piranha and Hammer Bro, but the character was cut for unknown reasons. Koopa Troopa's model additionally has an unused wing model, alongside having unused wing textures in its texture, indicating that it was originally to share its model with Paratroopa.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

In Mario Kart 8 and its enhanced port, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Paratroopas of various colors (green, red and blue) appear as spectators in Cloudtop Cruise, GCN Dry Dry Desert, 3DS Piranha Plant Slide, and 3DS Neo Bowser City.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Paratroopas appear in the first stage of the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Melee. One Paratroopa is red, the rest are green. When a character jumps on it, it loses its wings and falls to the ground. The player can defeat a Paratroopa without destroying its wings by simply grabbing it, carrying it, and throwing it or if the character uses a special move such as Kirby's swallow. A special effect the red Paratroopa has is that when its shell is thrown, fire can be seen on it, though there are no gameplay mechanics to it. Additionally, a trophy of a Paratroopa appears.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The Paratroopas reappear in the Subspace Emissary of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They are tougher enemies than in the preceding game since can attack the players and defend themselves. The red Paratroopas follow players while the green one hops and flies in patterns and attacks players who approach them. Players can only acquire trophies of both Paratroopas by using a Trophy Stand on them. Jumping on them removes their wings and turn them into regular Koopa Troopas, just like in their home series.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Koopa Paratroopas reappear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS as Smash Run enemies. They behave similarly to how they act in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There are both red and green variants, with the green hopping up and down toward the player and the red flying up and down or side to side. If the player gets close enough, the Paratroopa will attempt to headbutt the player. Jumping on them will remove their wings and turn them into simple Koopa Troopas. Both green and red varieties make an appearance as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, but in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, only the red Paratroopa makes an appearance as a trophy.

Mario Golf series

Paratroopa appears in Mario Golf: World Tour as an unlockable playable character, unlocked after 50 Star Coins are collected in Challenge Mode. Paratroopa hits the ball with a straight trajectory at 207 yards. It is one of the weaker hitting players in the game, but makes up with higher control and sweet spot stats, meaning that it is less likely for it to duff the ball as well as if the bar is not aligned perfectly, it won't mishit as bad as characters with lower sweet spot stats. It has a slightly higher drive than Peach, but not as strong control stats as her. Paratroopa hits the ball at the middle height, meaning that its balls are moderately affected by wind compared to lower hitting players, but it can scale elevations and trees more easily than lower hitting players. Also, during Mario's and Gold Mario's post-hole animation that is used after they score an Eagle, Hole-in-One, or Albatross, a green Paratroopa is one of the enemies that Mario/Gold Mario collides with after having grabbed a Super Star.

Mario Party series

A Paratroopa appearing from a Paratroopa Orb, going to swap Toadette and Wario.

In Mario Party 5, an item called the Paratroopa Capsule can be obtained. When used, a Paratroopa appears and takes away the opposing character's coins determined by a dice block roll of the user. Paratroopas also appear in backgrounds of some minigames, such as Merry Poppings and Wind Wavers.

The Paratroopa Capsule returns in Mario Party 6, where is renamed to the Koopa Troopa Orb and it has a different function: it swaps the player who passes the trap with the player who placed the trap. It does not work if the Metal Mushroom Orb is in effect. The Paratroopa featured in the Orb speaks in military jargon. Koopa Paratroopas are also featured in the minigame What Goes Up..., where players either must fall down, avoiding Koopa Paratroopas, or use Koopa Paratroopas to get the highest altitude in order to win. Paratroopas appear in Odd Card Out where they can be one of the different cards the player must choose.

A Paratroopa appears in Mario Party Advance, where he is the owner of Junk, the item shop, and the cousin of Koopa. Paratroopa does not give out quests, unlike most characters in the game, but he is involved with several of them, being Find the Password, Probably a Robbery?, and Accessorize! If players encounter him while not on a quest, he says that his shop is closed, but he tells the player that it may open soon.

Green and red Paratroopas make a cameo in Mario Party 8, in the minigame mode Test for the Best, where they hold the 2000 and 3000 points signs, respectively.

A red Paratroopa can be seen in Mario Party: Island Tour on the Star-Crossed Skyway board alongside Flutter and a Paragoomba. It appears at the first, second, and last Star Stage and hands out seven Mini Stars. More can be seen in the background of the Hot-Air Hijinks mode. Also, various Paratroopas appear in minigames such as Sky'd and Seek.

Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Koopa Paratroopas do not appear themselves in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, but have a very similar, beanish relative called Paratroopeas, who attack in a very similar way to Koopa Paratroopas, except that they have the ability to heal. Like Koopa Paratroopas, they lose their wings once they take enough damage and they become Troopeas. A stronger version of them exists are called Scaratroopeas, who attack in a faster manner and have the ability to even revive KO'd opponents.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Though Koopa Paratroopas do not appear, either themselves or have enemies based off of them, they are mentioned by a Toad in Peach's Castle about how he wished to have wings of a Paratroopa or Lakitu's Cloud to fly in a remote Time Hole. They are also referenced in the description for Paraslacks, a clothing that increases an adult Mario brother's speed and defense.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

A group of Blue Paratroopas appear in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. In this game, they teach the Mario Bros. the blue shell technique. Their appearance is similar to the Paper Mario series since they also wear the sunglasses. Another kind of Paratroopa appear in Bowser's Castle. Their shells are red and they do not wear glasses. Corporal Paraplonk is a red-shelled Paratroopa who wears green shoes and a red bucket on his head, and he serves as one Bowser's lackeys, alongside Private Goomp and Sergeant Guy, all whom are members of the Elite Trio.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Paratroopas make several small appearances in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. During the battle against the Elite Trio in Dreamy Driftwood Shore, a pair of Paratroopas appear with a purple block each during Corporal Paraplonk's attack, placing a block in line with Mario, to both sides of him. In Dreamy Neo Bowser Castle (Bowser's Dream), two green Paratroopas appear as Bowser is demanding for meat to grow bigger. In Neo Bowser Castle, after Bowser betrays Antasma and takes the Dream Stone for his own, a Paratroopa is seen carrying Princess Peach. In the final battle, Dreamy Bowser creates golden, otherworldly Dreamy Paratroopas to send after Mario and Luigi. With the exception of Corporal Paraplonk, no other red-shelled Paratroopas appear in the game.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Although normal Koopa Paratroopas do not appear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, their paper versions do.

WarioWare series

Koopa Paratroopas make small appearances in several of 9-Volt's classic Nintendo-themed microgames in the WarioWare series. The first time they have appeared in is WarioWare: Touched!, in the stomp version of the microgame Super Mario Bros. Here, players need to tap a Koopa Paratroopa to turn it into a Koopa Troopa, then tap it again to put it in its shell, then tap once more to send its shell careening. A Koopa Paratroopa is featured in a microgame in WarioWare: D.I.Y., called Paratroopa. Here, players, as Mario, need to avoid the bouncing green Paratroopa by moving left or right.

Mario Baseball series

In both Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers, Paratroopa appears as a playable character. In Mario Superstar Baseball, it is classified as a Technique player, where it has good ball control while Mario Super Sluggers describes it as an all-around character. In both games, Paratroopa has two colors: its regular red shell and the green-shelled version, which they slightly differ in stats. It has the ability, High Jump, to catch high flying balls in the air. In the Challenge mode of Mario Superstar Baseball, both Paratroopas are teammates for Donkey Kong's team. For the Superstar Challenge, Paratroopas missions are smacking a hit, using its High Jump ability to make a catch, and pitching a whole game and win as Paratroopa.

In Mario Super Sluggers, it is one of the few levitating characters that cannot feel the effects of a POW ball or when giant in Graffiti Runner; however in Graffiti Runner, it cannot create earthquakes as a result. Koopa Paratroopa is slightly slower than it was in the predecessor, being slower than the basic Koopa Troopa. Its fielding skills are improved, however, along with its batting and pitching skills, though the Green Koopa Paratroopa sacrifices its pitching skills to boost its batting skills. Both Koopa Paratroopas show good chemistry with Koopa Troopa, Paragoomba, and Bowser. While the Koopa Troopa shows good chemistry with Bowser Jr. and Dry Bones, Koopa Paratroopa's chemistry with these characters is neutral. When Koopa Paratroopa tackles the ball, it has moderate range and it attacks similar to its shell shot in the Paper Mario series. In the Challenge Mode of this game, Koopa Paratroopas are found on Wario's team, the Wario Muscles rather than being on Donkey Kong's team.

Super Princess Peach

The glad and mad Koopa Paratroopas.

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Princess Peach, having the same roles from the Mario platformer games. They have the same appearance as in the Yoshi's Island games. Two types of Paratroopas under the effects of the Vibe Scepter also appear: the Mad Green Paratroopa and the Glad Red Paratroopa.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3

Paratroopa makes an appearance as an unlockable character in the game, Mario Hoops 3-on-3. Similar to its appearance in Mario Tennis, it is a Tricky character, meaning that its shots to the hoop are hard to anticipate and predict. It can be unlocked by at least winning a bronze trophy in the regular Mushroom Tourney. Its special ability is the Wing Shot, which can be performed by tapping the screen in an 'N' pattern twice.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition

Koopa Partroopas appear in green, red, and yellow varieties in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.

Green Koopa Paratroopa

Green Koopa Paratroopas are Water-attribute enemies. In battle, in addition to attacking normally, they may occasionally use Winged Green Shell to nullify Fire and Dark attribute damage for two turns. When defeated, it may randomly drop a Water Block of a Green Koopa Troopa or a P-Wing, while defeating it with a 10+ Combo attack guarantees it will drop a Fruit. As Water enemies, they take extra damage from Wood attribute attacks and less from Fire damage.

As teammates, Green Koopa Paratroopas gain a Light sub-attribute (being Water/Light teammates), and have an HP rating of 4/6, an ATK rating of 1/6, and a RCV rating of 2/6. Their Winged Green Shell Skill recovers 500 HP for the player's team and changes any Wood Orbs on the player's Orb field into Water Orbs, while their Awoken Skill Water Boost raises the ATK of any Water attribute teammates when the player clears a horizontal row of Water Orbs. Green Koopa Paratroopas use Fruits and Rare Fruits to raise their Skill Levels. The player can create a Green Koopa Paratroopa by transforming a Green Koopa Troopa with two P-Wings, and can be transformed into a Big Green Koopa Paratroopa using five Super Mushrooms.

Red Koopa Paratroopa

Red Koopa Paratroopas are Fire-attribute enemies. In battle, they may occasionally use Winged Red Shell to nullify Wood and Light attribute damage for two turns. When defeated, it may randomly drop a Fire Block of a Red Koopa Troopa or a P-Wing, while defeating it with a 10+ Combo attack guarantees it will drop a Fruit. As Fire enemies, they take extra damage from Water attribute attacks and less from Wood damage.

As teammates, Red Koopa Paratroopas gain a Light sub-attribute (being Fire/Light teammates), and have an HP rating of 4/6, an ATK rating of 2/6, and a RCV rating of 1/6. Their Winged Red Shell Skill recovers 500 HP for the player's team and changes any Water Orbs on the player's Orb field into Fire Orbs, while their Awoken Skill Fire Boost raises the ATK of any Fire attribute teammates when the player clears a horizontal row of Fire Orbs. Like Green Koopa Paratroopas, Red variants also use Fruits and Rare Fruits to raise their Skill Levels. The player can create a Red Koopa Paratroopa by transforming a Red Koopa Troopa with two P-Wings, and can be transformed into a Dry Bones using six Boo Mushrooms.

Yellow Koopa Paratroopa

Yellow Koopa Paratroopas are Light-attribute enemies. In battle, they may occasionally use Winged Yellow Shell to nullify Dark attribute damage for two turns. When defeated, it may randomly drop a Light Block of a Yellow Koopa Troopa or a P-Wing, while defeating it with a 10+ Combo attack guarantees it will drop a Fruit. As Light enemies, they take extra damage from Dark attribute attacks and normal damage from any other attribute.

As teammates, Yellow Koopa Paratroopas gain a Light sub-attribute (being Light/Light teammates), and have an HP rating of 4/6, an ATK rating of 2/6, and a RCV rating of 2/6. Their Winged Yellow Shell Skill recovers 500 HP for the player's team and changes any Fire Orbs on the player's Orb field into Light Orbs, while their Awoken Skill Light Boost raises the ATK of any Light attribute teammates when the player clears a horizontal row of Light Orbs. Like Green and Red Koopa Paratroopas, Yellow variants also use Fruits and Rare Fruits to raise their Skill Levels. The player can create a Yellow Koopa Paratroopa by transforming a Yellow Koopa Troopa with two P-Wings, and can be transformed into a Big Yellow Koopa Paratroopa using five Super Mushrooms.

One of Ludwig von Koopa's forms as a teammate has a Yellow Koopa Paratroopa accompanying him, and is named Ludwig & Yellow Koopa Paratroopa.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS

Koopa Paratroopas are usable enemies in Super Mario Maker and its port, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, just like in past 2D Mario platformers. They can be created by combining a Koopa Troopa with a pair of wings. Green Paratroopas continuously leap on the ground in a zig-zag pattern, while the Paratroopas of red variety fly up and down on a vertical route. The player can enlarge Koopa Paratroopas by dragging a Super Mushroom onto them and they will then become Colossal Koopa Paratroopas.

Super Mario Run

Red Koopa Paratroopas appear in Super Mario Run, reprising their role as they had in the 2D Mario platforming games. Koopa Paratroopas can either fly up and down, or back and forth.

Mario Sports Superstars

Koopa Paratroopas appear as selectable sidekicks exclusively to the baseball mode of Mario Sports Superstars. Four color varieties of the Koopa Paratroopa can be selected separately: red, green, blue, and yellow, making this color choice greater than their appearances in the Mario Baseball series. They are classified as a Technique character, meaning that they have excellent control of the ball while they are batting and they have better fielding stats, though they are not speedy nor particularly powerful characters. All Paratroopas have only three pitching options, and they vary depending on the color. The Paratroopas additionally share similar stats, with the only differences being pitching velocity, speed, and mainly stamina. In the collectible digital card, the green Paratroopa is the one featured on the card.

In golf, due to the characters reusing animations from Mario Golf: World Tour, Mario and Metal Mario defeat a Paratroopa again in their Eagle, Hole-in-One, and Albatross post-hole animation.

Other appearances, cameos and references

Koopa Paratroopas appear in Skylanders: SuperChargers as part of Bowser's moveset; however, due to an agreement between Nintendo and Activision, they are featured exclusively on the Nintendo versions of the game.

In Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, a Koopa Paratroopa sprite from Super Mario Bros. can be seen on the wallpaper in the laboratory in the introductory cutscene.

Characteristics and traits

The left image depicts the Paratroopa's original design, while the right image depicts the Paratroopa's current design.

Koopa Paratroopas have an identical appearance to their parent species, the Koopa Troopa. They are designed after tortoises, and were originally designed being a quadruped until Super Mario World, although various artwork of Paratroopas have anthropomorphized quadruped Paratroopas. In Super Mario World, they have been given shoes to designate their current bipedal appearance, just as regular Koopa Troopas have gotten. Most artwork of Paratroopas have colored their shells red to further distinguish from regular Koopa Troopa, though multiple artwork of green-shelled Paratroopas exist. All playable appearances of a Koopa Paratroopa have been red-shelled, with some exceptions including the Mario Baseball games giving players the choice to choose different colors for the Paratroopa, although the red Paratroopa is the default color regardless.

The most distinguishing feature of Paratroopas are their wings, which enable them to fly. These wings are not firmly attached to the Paratroopa's shells, with usually a single stomp getting rid of their wings and turning them into normal Koopa Troopas; this is further enhanced by the ability of simply adding wings to multiple objects in Super Mario Maker, Koopa Troopas included and the existence of the P-Wing. The shell-color of the Paratroopa is additionally used to separate behavioral differences: green-shelled Paratroopas typically bounce around or fly left and right while red-shelled Paratroopas fly around left and right; many exceptions are made to this rule, however. The Paratroopa's wing length differs from game to game, with Paratroopas in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Paper Mario, Yoshi's Island DS, and Super Princess Peach having very long wings, though the normal length for most games of the wings is rather short.

In games where Paratroopas have a voice, Paratroopas mostly borrow their voice clips from Koopa Troopa's electronic ones. Initially, Paratroopa sounds identically to Koopa Troopa beginning with Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64; Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is the first game to increase the pitch of its voice clips to distinguish from Koopa Troopa and has been the norm for Paratroopa ever since, with a few exceptions.

Official profiles and statistics

Main article: List of Koopa Paratroopa profiles and statistics‎

Bios often mention the ability of Koopa Paratroopas to fly and to lose its wings to turn into Koopa Troopas once they are stomped on. In various Mario RPGs barring Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Koopa Paratroopas feature very similar stats to Koopa Troopas, having high defense due to the protection of their shells and they can avoid grounded attacks thanks to their flying nature. However, their wings can usually be removed by the means of jumping on them, which turns them into ordinary Koopa Troopas. In the sports spin-offs that feature a playable Koopa Paratroopa, the playable Paratroopas are usually classified as technical or trickier characters, having a focus on outplaying and managing their opponents differently than relying on pure power or speed stats. Aside from that, they are usually very balanced, having no huge strengths or weaknesses.
