King Boo's Haunted Hideaway is a board from Mario Party 8. It is a haunted house-themed board set at night, and is unique in that the player can constantly see only a few spaces ahead of his or her character, even when viewing the map, which only lets the player see into the rooms that have been entered. The board also changes each time it is played in a new game. King Boo is the main attraction, and will be hiding in one of three sanctums within the mansion, but only one will have King Boo; finding one of the other two will cause mini-Red Boos to toss them into the nearby pitfall, taking them back to the start of the board. Red Boos also run the Candy Shops on the board as well.

When a player finds King Boo, he gives them a Star for 10 coins. He then "summons the bizarre", which rearranges the board, sends everyone back to start, and begins the search again. Whomps are also present, and players who want to pass them must trade a 10-coin fee. If the player trades 10 coins, the Whomp will move to block the other path, and the player may uncover a shortcut to either King Boo or a pitfall.

Landing on DK Spaces causes Donkey Kong to appear and use his platforms to block the pitfalls; the first player that reaches him receives a free Star from him. The Bowser Space works the opposite way; Bowser takes a Star from the player, and then drops them into the pit. If the player has no stars, Bowser grudgingly gives the player 10 coins; if played in Duel Battle and Star Battle Arena, Bowser will steal all of the player's coins instead of Stars. After a player encounters Donkey Kong, Bowser, or gets a star from King Boo, the pitfalls return to normal. The Lucky Space takes the player to the second floor, where there is a small path of Blue Spaces, each with three coins. At the end of the path is a Warp Pipe which takes the player directly to King Boo's room.

Landing on the ? Spaces in front of the Piranha Plants will cause them to snatch up and chew on adjacent players, taking 10 coins from them. The ? Spaces next to mirror cabinets will transport another player to the space. The ? Space next to Mowz lets the player steal candy, coins, or a Star from another player via pinball. ? Spaces next to shaking chests open the chest, giving the player candy, 20 coins, or Red Boos that take 10 coins from the player, depending on the gameplay and their amount of coins.

In the Star Battle Arena, players race to obtain 2 stars, which is done by finding King Boo and trading 10 coins for a Star twice. Here, the mansion stays the same, and areas that were revealed stay that way even when players are sent back to the start.

Trivia

  • Some of the pianos play the Super Mario Bros. underground theme.
  • The mechanic of Whomps being paid a toll in order for the player to pass also appears in the Mario Party board DK's Jungle Adventure, and the Super Mario Party board Whomp's Domino Ruins.
  • This is the only board in Mario Party 8 which becomes larger when played in Duel mode, rather than smaller, as the size of the layouts changes from 4x3 to 6x4.
  • If King Boo rearranges the house during the last five turns, the new spaces will not have any coins on them.
