Ice Hockey is an Event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to score more points than the opposing team by shooting the puck into the goal, with the event taking place in the Bolshoy Ice Dome. A Fishin' Lakitu, Toads and Chao appear as referees in this event.
Gameplay[edit]
In this event, the player can choose how many 90-second periods they would like to play, being able to choose either 2 or 3. To start the period, a Fishin' Lakitu will drop the puck onto the rink in a face-off, and the player must press either the 
or 
to take control of the puck as soon as it touches the ice. If the player is faster than their opponent, they will take control of the puck, but will lose it if they are slower. When the player has the puck, they can move around the ice using the Left Stick or the Control Pad, pass to other team members using 
or 
and shoot using or . The player can also perform tricks with the puck. The player can perform quick dashes to travel faster by inputting their direction twice, edge turns to change direction by quickly turning through the other directions, a quick turn to fend off opponents by inputting all directions in sequence, and a puck toss to change direction while stationary by pressing 
or 
. As well as the usual shots, the player can perform power shots when they have filled up their power gauge by handling the puck and performing tricks. Power shots replace the usual shot, and when used, the player can aim their shot towards the goal by sliding on the Touch Screen or swinging the Wii Remote. The power gauge empties completely after using a special shot, and will also gradually empty if the opposing team performs tricks on the player. When the puck is not in the player's control, they can grab the puck if they are near the opponent with it, and body check a further away opponent by pressing or . The player can also switch characters by touching them on the Touch Screen or by pressing 
. If the opposing team performs a power shot, the player takes control of the Shy Guy goalie, who they can move from side to side using the Left Stick or Control Pad, and make a jumping catch by pressing or when they are further from the puck. The team with the most points after all of the periods wins the event. If there is a tie at the end of all the periods, a Power Shot contest begins, in which teams take it in turns to try to make and save Power Shots, with the first team to make one that the other team fails to winning. When played in single player, the payer only competes in the final match, meaning they can only receive silver medals or better.

Tricks are special moves you can use when you have the puck.
There are four types of tricks.
The first trick is the Quick Dash, which gives you a burst of speed in a straight line.
To do a Quick Dash, snap twice in the direction you want to go while handling the puck. / To do a Quick Dash, quickly press twice in the same direction while handling the puck.

Next is the Edge Turn, which lets you change direction with a sharp turn while moving fast.

Next is the Quick Turn, which lets you perform a spinning turn to shake off opponents while handling the puck.

Let's talk about power shots.

The power gauge for both teams is shown on the bottom of the screen. When it is full, you can unleash a power shot.
The power gauge fills up as you handle the puck and perform tricks near opponents, but it empties if you get hit by your opponents' tricks.

When performing a power shot with the Wii U GamePad, slide on the touch screen like you are flicking the puck with your finger. / When performing a power shot with the Wii Remote Plus, swing the Wii Remote plus like a hockey stick.
Slide quickly from the middle of the touch screen to the upper right to shoot right, and to the upper left to shoot left. / Swing from right to left to shoot to the left. Swing from back to front to shoot the puck straight.

You can steal the puck when the other team has it by approaching the opponent handling the puck and hitting the puck with your stick.
Try stealing the puck from an opponent now.

Body-check an opponent with the puck to knock them away and steal it.
However, you'll lose a lot of time if the opponent dodges your body check.

When the other team unleashes a power shot, you'll control the Shy Guy goalie.
Move left or right to move the Shy Guy left or right. / To move the Shy Guy left or right, press left or right on .
