Game & Watch Gallery, known as Game Boy Gallery 2 in Australia and Game Boy Gallery (ゲームボーイギャラリー Gēmu Bōi Gyararī) in Japan, is a compilation game that was released for the Game Boy in 1997. Despite its name, it is actually the second game in the Game & Watch Gallery series. The game includes both Classic and Modern versions of Game & Watch games. The Classic version is identical to that of the originals that features nameless individuals as the main characters, while the Modern version features Mario and his friends along with updated graphics, updated gameplay, and music.

Three sequels followed Game & Watch Gallery: Game & Watch Gallery 2, Game & Watch Gallery 3, and Game & Watch Gallery 4.

The game was rereleased on the Nintendo 3DS's Virtual Console in Japan on June 22, 2011; in North America on July 14, 2011; and in Europe and Australia on July 21, 2011.

Stars[edit]

Game & Watch Gallery features a system to unlock bonus features. To do this, the player needs to earn stars. Every 200 points the player scores in a minigame is worth a star, up to five stars in each minigame mode. A high score between 200 and 399 is worth one star, a score of 400–599 is two stars, a score of 600–799 is three stars, a score of 800–999 is four stars, and a score of 1,000 and above is five stars. Each minigame counts its stars separately (for example, the player cannot earn 150 points in one minigame and 250 points in another and earn two stars for the cumulative total). As the player collects stars, they unlock features in the Gallery Corner. If the player earns five stars in a Modern game, they will unlock a very hard mode called Star Mode. The player can earn a total of 80 stars.

Minigames[edit]

  • ManholeYoshi must block holes in the ground with four manhole covers to make sure Toad, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario do not fall through. In Classic Mode, the player has only one manhole cover to block the holes.
  • Fire – Mario and Luigi must catch Toads, Yoshis, and Donkey Kong Jrs. as they jump out the window of the burning Mushroom Castle. Also coming from the window are Yoshi Eggs that contain either a Super Star, which contributes bonus points, or a Bob-omb, which counts as a miss when carried to safety. In Classic Mode, an apartment is on fire, forcing the people inside to jump out the window. The player controls two firemen that use their life net to bounce the falling people across the screen to safety into the ambulance.
  • Octopus – Mario is a sea diver and must deliver treasure to Princess Peach, but he must avoid the Octopus's arms. His speed is affected by how much treasure he is carrying, but he can throw his bagful of treasure at the Octopus's arms. Bonus points are awarded depending on how much treasure he gives to Peach. In Classic Mode, a sea diver must avoid the Octopus's arms while diving for treasure.
  • Oil PanicBowser is dropping oil into a castle, and Mario must use two buckets to catch the oil before it touches the floor. Yoshi serves to dispense oil and can even be used to take out Bowser from the top of the castle, gaining bonus points in the process. In Classic Mode, the Station Helper must collect oil dripping from the ceiling of a gas station in one bucket and dump it to his boss before the bucket overflows.

There are 16 games in all displayed in the Gallery Corner. The first four are unlocked by getting 400 points in the Modern version of a game. The four after that are achieved through 400 points in a Classic game. The next four are shown by getting 800 points in the Modern games, and the final four games are won through 800 points in the Classic versions. These games are for display only and are not playable. With the exception of Oil Panic, all of the playable games are represented.

Trivia[edit]

GWG SGB Mode.png
Super Game Boy
  • Playing on the Super Game Boy displays a Super Nintendo Entertainment System controller instead of the bottom of a Game Boy Pocket when the mode for each game is being selected.
  • The unused pause jingle for Modern games was recycled and modified for Game & Watch Gallery 4.
  • This is the only Game & Watch Gallery game to have a different pause jingle for Classic games.
  • Although the game is known as Game Boy Gallery 2 in Australia, the original Game Boy Gallery, released only in Australia and Europe, does not feature Super Mario characters.
