Flying Man in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
A Flying Man attacking Pit.

The Flying Men are five identical characters that appear in both MOTHER and Earthbound. The Flying Men appear as a stage enemy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, exclusively in the Magicant stage; unlike most other elements on the stage the Flying Men use their 16-bit sprite appearance.

A singular Flying Man will spawn in front of the house on the right side of the stage, and will ally with the player that comes into contact with him first. Acting as an player, he will attack any other players that are not his allies, until he is knocked off the stage. After being defeated, a small tombstone will appear in front of the house. After some time, another Flying Man will spawn in front of the house; only five Flying Men can appear during a match.

A Flying Man also appears in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U game mode, Smash Tour, where he'll aid the first player who touches him. After joining a player, the Flying Man will attack any opposing players that get in his ally's way before disappearing.

A Flying Man Mii Fighter outfit and hat was released as DLC on July 31st, 2015, to use specifically with the Mii Brawler.

Flying Man FlyingMenTrophy3DS.png Flying Man trophy from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U SNES EarthBound (06/1995) The Flying Men are a team of five birdmen. Each time a Flying Man appears, he'll help the first person to reach him with Flying Cross Chops and Somersault Kicks. A small memorial stone will be erected for each one defeated. Once all five are gone, they're done fighting forever until the next battle. The Flying Men are five brothers who seem to be some kind of bird people. They make great allies, smoothly combining majestic jumps with Flying Cross Chops and Somersault Kicks, and they'll each support whoever reaches them first. Sadly, once they're defeated, they'll be buried next to their homes, never to return.
The Flying Men from EarthBound are five kind brothers with a cruel fate. They live together in a house on the outskirts of Magicant. The brothers gladly join Ness on his journey, but if they fall in battle, they return home to be buried. In Smash Tour, they'll ally themselves with the first player to touch them.

Trivia

Pre-release Flying Man
Magazine scan showing both the beta and final models.
  • The Flying Men were originally going to use a brand new 3D model for their appearance; however, according to a Famitsu magazine interview, Masahiro Sakurai stated that the model strained the Nintendo 3DS hardware, causing gameplay lag. The 2D sprite model was made instead, and was used in the final build of the game.
  • Interestingly, the Flying Man ignores all team battle rules; if a red team player activates the Flying Man, he will attack the other red team players, even if team attacks are turned OFF.
