Figure Skating Pairs is a Figure Skating Event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to score as many points as possible by performing a pairs figure skating routine, with the event taking place in the Iceberg Skating Palace.

Gameplay

In this event, the player has to select a pair of characters, on of which must be male and the other must be female. The player must then also select one of five pieces of music to perform their routine to, each with a different routine made up of combinations of five different single elements and six pair elements. The player earns more points for completing the elements in time with the music, and can also earn points for correctly holding hands by pressing A Button when prompted. To perform step sequences, the player must swing their Wii Remote in time with the music and the onscreen guide, with more points being awarded for swinging at the right time, and further points given for performing combos of successive great and perfect swings. To perform jumps, the player must swing the Wii Remote upwards to perform the initial jump, and spin the Wii Remote upwards to perform rotations once airborne. The better the timing of the takeoff and the more rotations performed in the air, the more points that the player earns. To perform spirals, the player must tilt the Wii Remote to keep their character's balance and follow the guideline on the rink. To perform spins, the player must spin the Wii Remote to perform rotations, with the faster they spin, the more points they earn. To perform waves, the player must hold the Wii remote out to the side and move it up and down to follow the line of blue musical notes, with more points awarded for collecting more of the musical notes. Pair waves are performed in a similar way with the addition of holding hands throughout to collect a single line of notes. Swings and throw jumps are performed by swinging the Wii Remote upwards while holding hands, with the timing of the swings affecting the points scored. To perform a Death Spiral, the player must hold hands and move the Wii Remote around in a slow circular motion. To perform lifts, the player must hold the pose shown onscreen, scoring more points for holding it more steadily for the duration of the lift. To end the routine, the player must strike the pose shown onscreen with the right timing. If the player is using Mario and Peach, Luigi and Daisy, Sonic and Amy or Silver and Blaze, the pose performed at the end will be a special one specific to those pairs of characters. after finishing their routine, the player is awarded points and a rank from C to A+ for their Steps, Jumps, Spins, Spirals and Waves, as well as an overall score and their ranking in the event. The characters with the highest total score wins.

Controls

  • Let's begin with how to hold the Wii Remote Plus for Figure Skating Pairs.
  • In this event, there are two ways to play--two players can each use their own Wii Remote Plus, or both can play by holding a single Wii Remote Plus together.
  • When each player uses their own Wii Remote Plus, they hold them vertically.
  • When both players hold a single Wii Remote Plus together, the woman (P2) holds the man's (P1) Wii Remote Plus to play.

Tutorial

  1. Individual Controls
Let's talk about the man and woman's performance.
When the man and woman perform separately, the controls are the same as in Figure Skating Singles.
Both players should perform in time to earn a high score.
Both players, try performing your parts now.
  2. Joining Hands
Let's talk about how to hold hands.
In this event, the man (P1) stands on the left when facing the TV screen and the woman (P2) stands on the right.
When joining hands, both players hold one Wii Remote Plus together.
To join hands, the man (P1) holds the Wii Remote Plus out to the player controlling the woman (P2).
The woman (P2) then presses A Button on the Wii Remote Plus with her left hand.
When playing in single player mode, press and hold A Button on your Wii Remote Plus when it's time to hold hands.
    Try joining hands now.
  3. Death Spirals
Let's talk about how to do death spirals.
In a death spiral, the two players join hands, and the woman (P2) goes around the man (P1).
When playing in single player mode, press and hold A Button as you slowly more the Wii Remote Plus around in a circle.
    Try the death spiral now.
  4. Lifts
Let's talk about how to do lifts.
A lift is a routine where the man lifts the woman's body up.
To perform a lift, begin by joining hands.
Next, strike the poses that appear on the TV Screen.
Maintain the pose without moving to earn a high score.
    Try performing a lift now.
  5. Throw Jumps
Let's talk about how to do throw jumps.
A throw jump is where the man helps the woman perform a jump.
To do a throw jump, begin by joining hands. Then, with hands held together, swing the Wii Remote Plus when you get to the yellow mark.
Next, keep your hands held together and raise the Wii Remote Plus straight up at the red mark to jump.
Try performing a throw jump now.
  6. Pair Waves
Let's talk about how to do a pair wave.
To do a pair wave, both players join hands and move their hands up and down in time with the music.
In the pair wave, the players hold hands to collect the blue musical notes between them.
Try doing a pair wave now.

Control Hints

  • In the throw jump, both players join together to perform a large jump. Both players must raise the Wii Remote Plus high in the air simultaneously at the right time.
  • In the death spiral, both players join together for a large spin. Make sure you have enough room for the player controlling the woman to move in a circle around the player controlling the man.
  • In the lift, strike the pose and hold it without moving. If both players can hold the pose without losing balance, you can earn a high score.
