Dizzy is a status ailment found in almost every Mario RPG game to date. It makes the victim unable to attack or causes his or her attack to miss. This status ailment has also made other appearances in other games.

History

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario

Dizzy

This effect can affect Mario and his enemies alike. Enemies like Dark Koopas and Groove Guys, are enemies that can cause dizziness. Mario can retaliate with the Dizzy Dial or Kooper's Dizzy Shell. Regardless, a small blue spiral will appear over the affected party's head, preventing them from moving for a few turns. One may also note that Dizziness affects flying enemies more than grounded enemies. For example, Medi Guys will remain dizzy for a full turn longer than the common Shy Guy affected by the same attack.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Again, dizziness is indicated by the blue spiral, and the Dizzy Dial returns. However, instead of negating the ability to attack, the victim's attacks will have a 50-50 chance of missing the target. In the case of FP-powered moves or items, the FP is subtracted when the attack begins, meaning Mario and his partners could waste FP should they miss; attack-dealing items may also fail to hit a target. Ms. Mowz has an attack that will make the enemy dizzy. Bosses can be affected with this.

Super Paper Mario

The player can use Fleep to briefly make enemies dizzy, rendering them unable to move or attack for a few seconds. In addition, detonating Boomer will cause any type of Boomboxer currently onscreen to become dazed and unable to attack.

A Reversya Cursya can inflict this status ailment on Mario and co. When inflicted, the controls will be reversed for a short time. Using Piccolo, however, will instantly cure it. Here, this aliment is known as Reversed.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Dizzy returns with the same effect as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The slaphammer Sticker can sometimes get enemies dizzy. Also the lightbulb thing sticker will make all enemies dizzy. The attack from lightning on the Battle Spinner can sometimes make enemies get dizzy too. When Mario gets Dizzy, he will be unbalanced and his eyes become white. Depending on the sticker he chooses it will vary. Using a Jump sticker type will cause Mario to jump and shake him arms and may fall on his face. Hammer type will be having the hammer to go fast. Fire or Ice Flower type will have the projectiles to fly in the background or the foreground. Enemies that become dizzy will have something when they miss. For example, Goombas will roll over if their attack misses. When Mario is dizzy, he will not be able to block a second time even if he has blocked an attack, run in battle or use Defensive/Dodging stickers such as the Spike helmet, the Shiny Spike helmet, the Flashy Spike helmet, the Frog Suit, the Shiny Frog Suit, the Super Boot, the Shiny Super Boot, the Tail, the Shiny Tail, and most importanly, the Leaf and the Shiny Leaf.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Dizzy reappears in Paper Mario: Color Splash, serving the same function as Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door and Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

Dizziness in this game is represented by two stars above the victim's head and their disoriented idle pose. The status ailment serves the same purpose it did in Paper Mario; the affected character is unable to do anything until the status wears off.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Advanced Cyclone Bros. attack of Luigi's can cause dizziness to enemies.

A Bob-omb's explosion and Bowletta's star attack can get Mario and Luigi dizzy.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The affliction is far more common in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, as Hammer attacks and some Bros. Items such as the Smash Egg and the Trampoline can cause dizziness to enemies. Many enemies can cause the heroes to become Dizzy as well, with examples being the Shroid's spiked ball attack and the Shroobsworth's dark meteor attack. Elder Princess Shroob also can cause dizziness with her meteor attack.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

The Dizzy status returns in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story with the same causes from Partners in Time. Attacks like Midbus's Iron Ball, the Thwomp Junker and Junker X throw at the bros. can cause this status effect.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

The status returns once again in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team with the same effect as the previous games. Some enemies like a Bandit a Grumbell or a Lob-omb can inflict this to Mario and Luigi. It can be caused to enemies with items like Shock Bomb. Also, the Spin Hammer (must be equipped) attack has a chance to make targets dizzy.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

The status returns in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the crossover between the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series. Dizzy works pretty much the same as it did in previous games for normal characters, while the variation Crumpled, introduced in Paper Mario: Sticker Star affects paper characters.
