Enemy formations are when groups of enemies are listed in a certain order in RPG battles. When the player engages battle with an enemy on the field, there are often other enemies that accompany it in battle.
In Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, enemies are on a 2-D plane and are listed from the ones in the front to the ones in the back (from left to right). In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, enemies are listed from left to right, from the front row to the back.
