Cat Shine Shards are collectibles found exclusively in the Bowser's Fury campaign of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They are smaller, less complex versions of Cat Shines, being red, shaped like a cat's head, and rimmed with gold, but lacking pointed decorations and gold facial features.
The fourth mission of each of the twelve major islands across Lake Lapcat is titled "Five Cat Shine Shards". As the name suggests, when Mario enters an island with this mission active, five Cat Shine Shards will be hidden throughout it. If either Mario, Plessie (while Mario is riding it), or Bowser Jr. comes in contact with a Cat Shine Shard, it is collected and displayed on the bottom of the screen in relation to its position, with shards found earlier in the obstacle courses being placed more to the left. Cat Shine Shards can also be collected by throwing held objects at them, such as baseballs, shells, or kittens.
Similarly to Moon Shards from Super Mario Odyssey, or Silver Stars from Super Mario 64 DS and the Super Mario Galaxy games, collecting all five Cat Shine Shards will make a Cat Shine appear, and collecting the Cat Shine will complete the mission. After the respective mission has been completed on an island, Cat Shine Shards will no longer be present there.
