After crash landing succeeding Mario's fight with Bowser, Cappy arrives to Mario and attempts to wake him up. When successful, he flies away in fear. After going passed two Bonneters who question Mario, Cappy comes face-to-face with him, apologizes for running away and tells him that he was startled. He then explains that Mario that he has landed in the Cap Kingdom. He says his kingdom, by the same monster (not knowing Bowser's name), was also attacked and his little sister Tiara was kidnapped. He then wishes to get Bowser in a ship of his own. Unfortunately, all of the airships were wrecked in the attack. On the other hand, Cappy then thinks and is pretty sure there is one in the next kingdom over. But in order to get over there, they would need to get to the Top-Hat Tower which is guarded. Cappy then suggests he and Mario should team up; Mario then realizes he hasn't got his cap. Cappy giggles and then lays himself of Mario's head. Mario isn't fond of Cappy's style, so Cappy merges with the piece of Mario's cap and officially becomes Mario's companion as Mario throws him and he spins around and comes back.

Mario meets Cappy.

Mario and Cappy then begin to make their way through Bonneton to the Top-Hat Tower and they will eventually arrive at a switch which Cappy can flip. A bridge will then rise from the clouds granting access to the tower. Four Mini Goombas will then charge at the pair as Cappy calls them "odd little fellows" and that they know Mario and don't seem to like him. Inside the tower, there is a pond and frogs which Cappy can capture so Mario can scale the tall ledges with extreme jumping heights. Another door then leads outside where there is more wreckage as well as scared Bonneters. Then Mario may go up a steep hill to the very top where there is a white platform. When Mario jumps on it, four rabbits on a small airship will appear, the one at the front in a green tuxedo known as Topper then tells Mario and Cappy that 'da boss' (Bowser) told them here would be a 'fella widda mustache' (Mario) coming along. He then introduces the group as the wedding planners and they call them the Broodals. Topper then states they have the treasure (Tiara) they need and that "ruffin' up goody-two-shoes meddlers" are part of his contract, before jumping down from the airship and summoning three hats, initiating the fight. After two hits, Topper is defeated and a spark pylon leading all the way to the Cascade Kingdom appears. Cappy can capture it and then as he and Mario move on, the title appears, thus indicating the journey has begun.
