The fight takes place in an arena filled with bananas; like the boss levels Necky's Nuts and Necky's Revenge, the whole Boss Dumb Drum arena takes place on a single screen. If the player enters with one Kong, they break open a DK Barrel, ensuring that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong start the battle together. The battle starts with Dumb Drum attempting to slam down onto the Kongs from above before going back up to the ceiling. If Dumb Drum misses the Kongs, it shakes at the top and releases two of the same enemy. For the whole battle, Dumb Drum releases these enemies in order, Kritters, Slippas, Klaptraps, Klumps, and Armies. For every pair of enemies that the Kongs defeat, Dumb Drum tries moving down quicker to crush the Kongs and also makes another attempt at crushing them than the previous turn. After defeating all of the enemies, Dumb Drum falls into the center and its top explodes. The Kongs are rewarded with a fifth Giant Banana.

In the Game Boy Advance version, after defeating a pair of enemies, a TNT Barrel appears in the arena. When Dumb Drum falls back down, the Kongs must throw it at Dumb Drum to directly attack it. Dumb Drum tries to crush the Kongs until they throw the barrel, rather than a set number of times, but it no longer speeds up during the battle. If Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong miss Dumb Drum, it releases two of the same enemies again.

A screenshot from Rare's early website
  • Rareware's old website showed a screenshot of Donkey Kong defeating Dumb Drum in a jungle scenery.[1]
    • The Pro Action Replay code 7E003E21 takes the player into the aforementioned room when used with the game. However, while the "Bad Boss Boogie" theme plays, Dumb Drum remains absent.[2]
