Template:Species-infobox Bins[1], also known as Garbage Cans[2][3] or Trash Cans[4][5], are seemingly inanimate objects found in Donkey Kong and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. Mario can stand on them to reach higher areas, but he can also pick them up and throw them to defeat common enemies like Bowbows. Some enemies like Faiachū cannot be defeated by bins, however. Once a bin hits an enemy, it falls off-screen.

Certain bins are actually alive; once Mario tries to pick these types of bins up, they rumble, grow feet, and reveal eyes from under the lid. They then wander around aimlessly and can defeat Mario if they knock into him. Mario can safely stand on top of them, but they cannot be lifted normally in their debut appearance. This variation first appears in Big-City and Mario Toy Company, after their harmless counterparts are introduced.

In the rendition of Mario Bros. included in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and the Super Mario Advance series, garbage cans may appear in the Mario Bros. Battle multi-player mode. It takes the place of the POW Block in the Mario Bros. Classic single-player mode, but it cannot be picked up and remains in place on the ground; however, it flips its lid on intervals. If a player approaches it while carrying another player, it will open and automatically close if thrown inside. If players get trapped inside, they can escape using a Super Jump (which can daze a player standing on it) or merely Jumping when the lip reopens. In addition, players will be randomly holding Koopa Shells, POW Blocks, Fish Skeletons, and Eggs (which in itself can contain Coins, Hearts or Starmen).

Trash Cans[6] can be collected from Item Boxes in Mario Kart Arcade GP. Here, the item is inanimate and consists of three small red, green and blue fruit cans strung together. They perform lock on shots onto another racer, and serve to slow down the competition.

Trivia

  • In Japanese supplemental materials of Donkey Kong and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, enemy versions of the bins are respectively known as Dust Man and Bucketman, despite being nearly identical. The name change may have been to avoid unintentional association with Dust Man, a robot from the Mega Man series.[citation needed]
