BMX is an Event that appears in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The objective of the event is to cycle along the track in the fastest time. The playable characters in this event are Mario, Waluigi, Dry Bones, Sonic, Metal Sonic, Wave and Mii, with Wave being unlocked by beating her in BMX Plus on the fifth day of Mario's story in the Road to Rio mode. Toads and Chaos appear as referees in this event.

In the Road to Rio mode, BMX appears as the event on day 5 of Mario's story.

Gameplay

In this event, the player must start their character cycling by pressing the A Button at the end of the three second countdown, and once the event has started, the player must repeatedly tap the A Button to gain speed. The player must also use either the Circle Pad or Control Pad to steer their character around the course. To perform jumps, the player must press the B Button in the marked areas on the jump, with each jump being rated depending on how close to the top of the ramp the jump was performed. The character gains a speed boost and fills the Super Dash Gauge with well-performed jumps, with better rated ones giving a larger boost to their speed and filling the Super Dash Gauge a greater amount. The player can also slipstream another character to gain a short speed boost, but will lose speed if they hit into another character during the race. The Super Dash Gauge can also be filled by slipstreaming other characters, as well as by reaching top speed through other means. Once the meter is full enough, the player can perform a Super Dash by pressing the X Button which depletes a certain amount of the gauge while giving the character a short speed boost. The quality of the boost depends on how full the meter is when the Super Dash is performed, as a fuller meter will give a better boost than a near-empty one.

Advice

  • Make a perfect jump from a ramp during a Super Dash for a faster jump.
  • Follow the lines with tire marks on banked corners o speed up more efficiently.
  • The Super Dash Gauge fills up a lot if you jump from near the top of the ramp.
