World 2 is a level in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, played during the Bowser intermission following Chapter 4: For Pigs the Bell Tolls. Its name is denoted as World 2-X, with X being the number of attempts that Bowser has used for the level. Like other Bowser levels, Bowser has unlimited lives. The music that plays during this level is an arrangement of the "Underwater Theme" from Super Mario Bros.

Story[edit]

In order to search for the Crystal Stars in Glitzville, Bowser and Kammy Koopa attempt to board the Excess Express, but Stewart is scared away by them. Bowser, mentioning that he snuck into Glitzville once before, starts to fly there in his Koopa Clown Car instead of taking the Cheep Blimp. However, the Koopa Clown Car runs out of power mid-flight, and Bowser falls into the middle of the ocean, where he enters World 2 to retreat back to Rogueport.

Layout[edit]

This level is modeled after World 2-2 from Super Mario Bros. Bowser starts underwater, with the sunken Koopa Clown Car to his left and a coral wall to his right. Following this is a Blooper, which acts identically to its appearance in Super Mario Bros., as well as several Brick Blocks, coins, and a yellow block containing Meat, which is above a bottomless pit. Another yellow block containing Meat appears shortly afterward, at which point Bowser can grow to an invincible size if he collects both pieces of Meat without taking a hit. This allows him to destroy the many subsequent Brick Blocks in his way, although coral walls cannot be destroyed. After the second yellow block, a strong current surrounded by Brick Blocks appears, which can pull Bowser into a bottomless pit, followed by another yellow block surrounded by coral walls, an X-Naut which falls from above into the water, and a Blooper. Next, an area with many Brick Blocks and coins appears, as well as three X-Nauts that fall into the water. Finally, the rightmost area of the level's underwater section contains a jump pad, which Bowser must use to ascend to a small overworld area with a staircase made of Brick Blocks, a single Goomba, and the flagpole. To the right of this jump pad is a Warp Pipe, as a reference to the end of World 2-2 in Super Mario Bros.; however, this Warp Pipe is non-functional.
