Poles are objects appearing in several Mario platforming games. In nearly all games they appear in, the player can grab onto them and move up and down on them before jumping off, but cannot do a handstand on them most of the time.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS

Poles first appear in Super Mario 64 and its remake, where they appear in Dire, Dire Docks, specifically during the mission Pole-Jumping for Red Coins. They are yellow-and-black objects attached to ceilings.

Super Mario Sunshine

Poles return in Super Mario Sunshine, appearing in certain areas of Ricco Harbor. They behave as they did in Super Mario 64.

New Super Mario Bros.

A single pole appears in New Super Mario Bros., specifically in World 3-Castle NSMB.png following the trio of Whomps. It is striped yellow and white, and behaves the same as in past installments.

Super Mario Galaxy

Poles also appear in Super Mario Galaxy as uncommon objects, most commonly appearing in Deep Dark Galaxy. They are more rectangular than in past games and thus only allow the player to grab it at four cardinal angles, but otherwise behave in the same way.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Poles return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, behaving the same as in New Super Mario Bros., though they are now striped purple and white. They only appear in the second room of World 3-Ghost Icon.png.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Poles return in Super Mario Galaxy 2, behaving exactly the same as in Super Mario Galaxy, though only the plastic-textured aesthetic variety appears. They mainly appear in Honeybloom Galaxy and Melty Monster Galaxy.

Super Mario 3D Land

Poles also appear in Super Mario 3D Land, and are present in a handful of levels, mainly World 8-2. They again have the same traits as in Super Mario Galaxy.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Poles return in New Super Mario Bros. 2, having the same color scheme as in New Super Mario Bros., and otherwise behaving the same as in past installments. Only five appear in the second room of World 5-NSMB2-Ghost House Course Icon.png.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Poles return in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, having the same color scheme as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and otherwise behaving the same as in past installments. They are much more common, appearing in the levels Haunted Shipwreck, Which-Way Labyrinth, Spinning Spirit House, and World CoinNSMBW Coinworld.png-6 in the former, and in the levels Haunted Cargo Hold and Porcupuffer Cavern in the latter.

Super Mario Odyssey

Poles return in Super Mario Odyssey, featuring the same behavior as in Super Mario Galaxy, though they now feature yellow-and-black stripes. They appear in New Donk City Hall Interior in the Metro Kingdom, and in the first section of the Darker Side.
