Info A event that combines skiing and rifle shooting. The first to reach the finish wins.

Biathlon is an Event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The objective of the event is to complete the course in the fastest time, with the event taking place at the Laura Cross-Country Ski & Biathlon Center. Toads and Chao appear as referees in this event.

Gameplay[edit]

In this event, the player starts by swinging the Wii Remote down when "Go!" appears onscreen. Doing so with perfect timing will give the player a speed boost, though doing so too early will cause the player's start to be delayed. The player can also get an extra speed boost when starting by pressing and holding B Button with the right timing and releasing it when they start the event. Once the player has started, they can press B Button to cause their character to push themselves along the course using their ski poles, however this will use up stamina, which is shown on the stamina gauge. The player initially only has a limited amount of stamina, but the gauge can be gradually refilled by not using B Button. The player can turn their character by tilting their Wii Remote left and right, and can also crouch on downhill sections of the course to go faster and also increase the rate at which the stamina gauge refills. At two points on the course, the player will arrive at shooting stations, where they will need to shoot five targets with a rifle before continuing. If the event is played in single player mode or the player is the first one to reach the range, they will shoot the targets with the Wii U GamePad, otherwise the player will use their Wii Remote to shoot. When using the GamePad, the player tilts it to aim at the target and presses ZR Button to shoot, though it will be harder to aim if the player approaches the range with a low stamina. With the Wii Remote, the player points it at the screen to aim and presses B Button to shoot, but can also hold A Button to use up some stamina to focus and improve the aim of their shot. The targets can be shot in any order, and after the player has finished shooting, they will receive a rank from C to A+ for their time taken and aim on the targets, as well as an overall score, which will determine whether the player gains a stamina boost or loses stamina and how much their stamina level will change by. Once the player has finished shooting, they will return to the course for more cross country skiing. The player that completes the course in the fastest time after all three skiing and both shooting segments wins the event.

Tutorial[edit]

Controls[edit]

  • Getting Ready
Let's begin with how to hold the Wii Remote Plus and Wii U GamePad for the Biathlon.
  • This event combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.
  • Cross-country skiing is played by holding the Wii Remote Plus like a ski pole.
  • In single player mode, rifle shooting is played by pointing the Wii U GamePad at the screen.
  • In multiplayer mode, only the first player to reach a shooting range can use the Wii U GamePad to shoot.
  • In multiplayer mode, players who reach the shooting range second or later point the Wii Remote Plus at the screen to shoot.
  • Put the Wii U GamePad in a safe place within reach, and hold the Wii Remote Plus upright.

Tutorial[edit]

  1. Start
Let's go over how to start.
A moment after "Ready" appears, the "Go!" signal is given.
To start, swing the Wii Remote Plus down when the "Go!" signal is given.
Swing at the same time as the "Go!" signal for a starting dash.
    Try practising the start now.
  2. Pushing Off (cross-country skiing)
Let's talk about pushing forward to ski.
When cross-country skiing, press B Button on the Wii Remote Plus to push forward.
The gauge at the bottom of the TV screen is the Stamina Gauge. It shows how much stamina you have left.
You use up a little stamina when you press B Button to propel yourself forward. Your stamina recovers slowly when you aren't pushing forward.
Try pushing forward on your skis now.
  3. Turning (while skiing)
Let's talk about turning as you ski.
Tilt the Wii Remote Plus left or right to turn.
    Try turning now.
  4. Crouching
You can lean forward and crouch as you ski.
On downhill sections, tilt the Wii Remote Plus forward to crouch and speed up. You will also recover stamina faster while crouching.
Try crouching as you ski downhill now.
  5. Shooting
Let's talk about how to shoot.
The shooting portion starts once you reach one of the two shooting ranges on the course. You will switch to a rifle and take aim at the targets.
Switch to the Wii U GamePad to shoot. In multiplayer mode, however, only the first player to reach the shooting range can use the Wii U GamePad.
First, we will explain shooting with the Wii U GamePad.
Switch to the Wii U GamePad now. You have plenty of time, so there's no need to rush.
The touch screen on the Wii U GamePad will show the target zoomed up, like looking through a scope.
To aim, watch the Wii U GamePad as you tilt it forward, back, left, or right.
Your hands may shake depending on our stamina level when you start shooting. The more stamina you have, the easier it is to line up the sights.
Press ZR Button to shoot. In the Biathlon, you can shoot the five targets in any order.
    Try shooting the targets now.
Once you have shot all the targets, you will return to cross-country skiing. You lose stamina depending on how many times you missed, so shoot carefully.
Next, let's talk about how to shoot using the Wii Remote Plus. Take a look at the TV Screen.
Point the Wii Remote Plus at the TV screen to aim at a target, and press B Button to shoot.
Hold down A Button to focus and zoom in on the target. Focusing makes it easier to aim, but it also drains your stamina.
Try shooting with the Wii Remote Plus now.

Control Hints[edit]

  • When going downhill, you ski faster by tilting the Wii Remote Plus forward and crouching (bending your body down) than by swinging the Wii Remote Plus.
