NES version

Mario Bros.[1] (also known as Classic Mario Bros.,[2] and the battle mode or Battle Mode) is a competitive remake of Mario Bros. found in the 2 Player Game mode of Super Mario Bros. 3. In Super Mario All-Stars, this version exists alongside another remake known as the Battle Game, which is found in the main menu for Super Mario Bros. 3. The battle mode and Battle Game are both absent in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, having been replaced by another remake of Mario Bros.

To access the battle mode, one player must press the A Button button in the Family Computer and localized Nintendo Entertainment System releases or the B Button button in the All-Stars version while on the other player's panel in the world map. Whoever wins is immediately given a turn to play in the main game.

Gameplay[edit]

The battle mode cycles through twelve different stages, most of them are similar to the original arcade game. In them, five enemies will emerge from the top pipes. The goal is to survive while defeating all five enemies with the one getting the most wins. Enemies that must be defeated are Spinies, Sidesteppers, and Fighter Flies; defeating a Fireball does not count. Players can also indirectly kill each other by forcing the other player to collide with an enemy to gain victory. Players can also steal goal cards from each other by bumping from below, stomping, or using the POW Block. If a brother gets his third card, then he is instantly awarded extra lives in the main game equal to their combination. However, if a loose card is not grabbed before a round ends, it is lost. Any deaths incurred in the battle mode will not affect the player's lives in the main game.

Every fourth match is a bonus stage with three different types. The first requires players to grab at least three of the five coins. The second has a vertical pipe that shoots out Fireballs and coins. The player that collects at least three coins or survives wins. The final stage has the players climbing ladders to retrieve coins under ? Blocks, some of which are empty. All five coins must be collected with the winner being the one who collected the most.
