The Wario series is a spin-off of the Mario series that features Wario as the main character. It is the first series created by Nintendo to feature a villain/antihero as the main protagonist. Since its inception, the series has been primarily handled by Nintendo R&D 1 and its successor, Nintendo SPD Group No. 1.

The Wario series branches into two main sub-series, the Wario Land series and the WarioWare series. Wario Land games are platformers that involve the greedy and selfish protagonist looking for treasure and other ways of accumulating wealth. The WarioWare games focus on action. They are groups of short minigames (called microgames) which are made by Wario and his friends, motivated by his wish of making money; they work in the fictional WarioWare, Inc., a video game producing company. These microgames often make use of the new technologies of the system they are released for.

With the release of Super Smash Bros. in 1999, Nintendo started the Super Smash Bros. series. Though the series was more of a crossover series for all of Nintendo's major series, it has featured various characters from not only the Mario series, but also the Wario series. Wario is represented as a series separate from Mario, bearing his own symbol, which is the large "W" from the WarioWare logo. In the games, players select whichever character they want, and then fight against other characters from different Nintendo games on a specific stage. Each character has different move-sets, clearly defining them from one another. Wario is the only playable character from his series, but other major characters like Ashley, have received appearances, with Ashley being an Assist Trophy.

Major elements of the Wario series

This section of the article does not cover elements from the WarioWare series. See WarioWare's article for more information on characters.
