“Now this is a DK Space. Land on it and Donkey Kong will show up and do something good for you!”
MC Ballyhoo, Mario Party 8

DK Spaces are spaces in the Mario Party series, in which if a character lands on one, Donkey Kong will appear and do many good things (Donkey Kong shows up and causes a positive effect). DK Spaces mainly serve as a counter to Bowser Spaces. Many show Donkey Kong or the DK Symbol.

History

Mario Party 5

The space first appears in Mario Party 5, which is also the first Mario Party game where Donkey Kong is no longer a playable character. The space is always placed on a random spot on the board and landing on it made Donkey Kong do one of three events:

  • DK Bonus: Donkey Kong lets the player roll a Dice Block in the form of a barrel to get coins equal to the amount shown.
  • DK Minigame: All players participate in a Minigame where they collect bananas. At the end, Donkey Kong gives everyone coins equal to the amount of bananas that they got by once, twice, or even thrice.
  • DK Roulette: Donkey Kong and the player roll a Dice Block. If the player rolls a higher number, Donkey Kong will give them a free Star.

Donkey Kong also does a fourth thing, the only thing that doesn't require landing on his space: stopping a Bowser event if someone lands on his space. While it does stop the event, Bowser still steals 20 coins just from the player who landed on his space. However, this happens very rarely.

Mario Party 6

In Mario Party 6, more DK Spaces are placed on the board, but they are only around during the day, as they are replaced with Bowser Spaces at night. The DK Roulette is removed, and the DK Bonus has the possibility to get a Star as well as coins. Also, Donkey Kong no longer intervenes when a player lands on a Bowser space.

Mario Party 7

In Mario Party 7, the bonus and roulette events are gone. Players can only earn their prizes from the DK Spaces by minigames alone. In this game, there are two types of Minigames — single-player and mulitiplayer. In single-player, players have to beat Donkey Kong to the goal in order to earn 10 coins, 20 coins, 30 coins, or even a Star. Multiplayer works the same as it did in the last two Mario Parties.

Mario Party 8

In Mario Party 8, whenever someone lands on the space, Donkey Kong appears to do something helpful, with a different method for each board, usually the opposite of whatever that board's Bowser Space will do. In this game, the DK Space alternates with the Bowser Space, meaning that when one lands on the DK Space, after the event is over, it will be replaced with a Bowser Space and vice-versa. Also, the shape of the space is different with each board, including the tutorial. Donkey Kong does the following on each board.

  • DK's Treetop Temple: Tosses the player directly to the Star.
  • Goomba's Booty Boardwalk: Tells the player to deposit 5 coins into a barrel. The player then shakes the barrel as much as they can within a few seconds to earn back more coins (the player can earn back up to 11-25 coins).
  • King Boo's Haunted Hideaway: Covers all of the pitfalls with special platforms. The first player to reach a pitfall will receive a free Star from Donkey Kong before being sent back to the Start. The platforms will also disappear once King Boo shuffles the house, or whenever someone lands on a Bowser Space.
  • Shy Guy's Perplex Express: Donkey Kong's Barrel Train will overtake the current locomotive. Donkey Kong will then give a free Star to the first player that reaches him (twice the player's coin total in Star Battle Arena-presumably in between 40 and 57 coins) and then leaves. The Barrel Train will also leave if someone lands on a Bowser Space.
  • Koopa's Tycoon Town: Deposits 20 coins into one of the five main hotels on the player's behalf.
  • Bowser's Warped Orbit: Gives the player a free star (a free piece of candy in Star Battle Arena).

This is the only Mario Party game so far not to involve DK Minigames.

Mario Party 9

In Mario Party 9, DK Spaces appear only on the board DK's Jungle Ruins. When landed upon, the Bananas and Z-Bananas rotate around the stage in an event called Banana Spin Wheel. The bananas rotate until the captain presses A Button. When this happens, the captain can keep any bananas that flies past after the rotation is stopped.
