Amsterdam, popularly known as "Venice of the North"note, is the capital city of the Netherlands. It first appears as a city exclusive to the PC version of Mario is Missing!, before making a reappearance as the setting of Amsterdam Drift from Mario Kart Tour.

History[edit]

Luigi in Amsterdam

Amsterdam appears in the DOS and CD-ROM Deluxe versions of Mario is Missing. It is part of the fourth level set, alongside Tokyo, Cairo, Bombay, and Toronto, and must be cleared to defeat Iggy Koopa. Like all the other cities in Mario is Missing!, Amsterdam was invaded by Koopa Troopas, who stole artifacts from various local landmarks. In this case, they stole Rembrandt's paintbrush from his house, a tulip from the Aalsmeer Flower Market, a diamond from the Amsterdam Diamond Center, and the steering wheel of a boat in one of Amsterdam's canals. Luigi will be rewarded with money if he finds and returns the artifacts to their respective landmarks, which also rescues the city.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Amsterdam appears in Mario Kart Tour starting from the Amsterdam Tour, which introduces a new course known as Amsterdam Drift. Its second and third routes, Amsterdam Drift 2 and Amsterdam Drift 3, debuted in the Metropolitan Tour and November-December 2022 Peach vs. Bowser Tour respectively.

Amsterdam Drift returns in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the fourth wave of the Booster Course Pass. In that game, it is the first course of the Fruit Cup.
