From the Super Mario Wiki
This is my work-in-progres taxonomic list of all the Koopa Species. First I have a list of the higher level classification of the Koopas (which are the same for all the species), followed by a more in-depth list divided up into FAMILIES, Subfamilies, Tribes, Genus, species, and _subspecies. My original version included SUPERFAMILIES but I had to remove that level for clarity purposes here on the Wiki. As a result some of my families were downgraded to subfamilies and in turn, some subfamilies became tribes. These alterations are: Abnormoidea = Abnormidae, Talpidae = Talpinae, Ludibunidae = Ludibuninae; Capitoidea = Capitidae, Fulgoridae = Fulgorinae, Soporidae = Soporinae; Cimexoidea = Cimexidae, Cantharidae = Cantharinae, Clavidae = Clavinae, Graninae = Granini, Raninae = Ranini. Of course, all those bizarre latin names propbably meant nothing to most of you reading this.
I'm also writing short profiles for the families, species, etc.; originally I planned to do it all on my computer's hard drive and only upload it when I was done, but my poor machine has been damaged and I can no longer guarantee the safety and availability of my files, so I'm uploading what I have now. So, sorry for it peetering out halfway through for now, but c'est la vie.
Now for the higher classifications, the levels are listed right there, so no legend will be needed for this section, like for the segregated list that follows.
- Domain - Eukaryota - (Multicelluar Organisms)
- Kingdom - Animalia - (Animals)
- Phylum - Chordata - (Vertebrates)
- Class - Reptilia - (Reptiles)
- Superorder - Dinosauria - (Dinosaurs)
- Order - Draconiformes - (Dragons)
- Infraorder - Koopides - (Koopas) - Small dragons possessing shells that may or may not be directly attached to the organism. Most Koopas are noted for their high levels of magical energy which allow them to create "Tardis space" (spaces which can hold more matter than their natural volume should be able to contain); thus allowing them to store multitudes of items in specific spaces in their shells, as well as allowing them to retreat into their shells for protection.

DRACONIDAE
Koopas possessing multiple traits from their Dragon ancestors.
Draconinae
Koopas of various sizes and abilities, most of which have spiked shells.
Draconini
Dragon Koopas with horns and spikes.
Draconis
The first Koopas, set apart from their fellow firebreathing Dragons solely by their Shells and the Tardis abilities they produce.
- Dragon Koopa - D. koopa - This species has been considered the greatest among all Koopas due to the array and amount of power its individuals can possess. Draconian Firebreath is their trademark attack others including poison fangs, incredible Tardis and raw magical abilities, sonic screeching, Ground Pounding, light refraction resulting in the appearance of "clones" and brute strength. There are many morphs of shell, hair and eye colour; though the different colours do not bespeak different abilities. Unfortunately Dragon Koopas have been declining over the years and the only known surviving line is the royal family of the Koopa Kingdom.
- Koopa Kid - D. agnatus - A tiny species of Dragon Koopa, originally stemming from stunted D. koopa. They have a marked decrease in power from their larger counterparts, and adult Koopa Kids can only be told apart from baby Dragon Koopas by their fully developed head horns. They have identical colour morphs as D. koopa though their eyes are too small to show coloured irises. Unlike Dragon Koopas, Koopa Kids are quite numerous, though rarely seen outside certain areas of Dark Land.
Corpulentus
- Boom Boom - C. laertus - This species looks can only be told apart from juvenile Dragon Koopas by its orange scales and large shell spikes. It has a lot of brute strength and the ability to spontaneously grow wings and fly, though it lacks many of the more specialized magics, such as Firebreath.
Cornigerini
A Tribe of Koopas with single head spikes that broke away from Dragon Koopas long ago.
Cornigera
- Sumo Bro. - C. conflo - The large ancestor of the Hammer Bros. that uses its power to summon waves of fire. It has a single spike on its head, small eyes and a discernable snout.
Ignobilis
- Spike Koopa - I. sudis - A rare little species of beaked Koopa possessing single and very large head horns. They have brown shells like Boom Booms.
Fustisinae
Bulky Koopas famed for their Tardis abilities surrounding their digestive tract (being able to eat non-food items and regurgitate them later as weapons).
Belua
- Uber Clubba - B. fustis - A nearly extinct species that sometimes reemerges in the form of Supercharged Clubbas as well. This species posesses a large spiked shell, small snout, hair and small eyes. It is the only known species evolved from normal-sized Dragon Koopas, and gave rise to the Clubbas.
Fustis
Clubbas and their kin, largely known for their slothfulness.
- Clubba - F. fustis - This species of Koopa typically spends most of its time resting, though in battle it can prove quite a challenge as it usually wields a large mace and has high stamina.
- Dark Clubba - F. f. umbra - A black, featureless, shadow-subspecies of Clubba found only in the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials.
- White Clubba - F. f. nivalis - A white-scaled subspecies of Clubba found in cold climates.
- Spike - F. paulus - A small species of Clubba that usually attacks by swallowing spiked balls and later regurgitating them up at its enemies. Spikes are also very strong, being able to throw objects much larger than themselves at enemies.
- Gabon - F. labiosus - A small species of bald Clubba with large, bulging lips. Like Spikes, this species attacks by regurgitating large spiked balls.
- Star Spike - F. viridins - This large, Beanish Clubba attacks like a Spike by spitting up spiked balls. They are a rare species, found only in Stardust Fields.
ABNORMIDAE
An offshoot of the Clubbas consisting of Koopas with more mammalian traits than reptilian. However they can still be identified as Koopas by their shells, which maintain the same appearance as the Clubbas'.
Ludibuninae
Ludibundus
- Chargin' Chuck - L. ludo - Robust Koopas who have lost any discernable snouts. They are renowned for specializing in various sports and using those skills to attack. Aside from their strength and durability, Chargin' Chucks can be linked to their distant Dragon-Koopa ancestors by their ability to "clone" themselves.
Talpinae
Talpa
- Rocky Wrench - T. instrumenti - Small, mole-like Koopas that burrow and hide under manholes. Physically they look like moles, with long snouts tipped with small black noses, brown skin that many confuse as fur (because of the colour), and clawed paw-like hands. While not related to Hammer Bros. and their kin, T. instrumenti 's ability to store and throw endless wrenches at their opponents is quite similar to the MALLEUSIDAE family. Similarly, Rocky Wrenchs have developed Magikoopa's Blindness (very sensitive eyesight, that necessitates the wearing of sunglasses). However, this is an unremarkable development as the disorder is found throughout higher members in the Koopides infraorder (though species-wide cases only exist in Talpinae and MAGICIDAE).
AETHRIDAE
Another family evolved from Clubbas. Like Chargin' Chucks, the Lakitus lost their discernable snouts, but they took it farther and their face flattened like humans'. The Lakitus' claim to fame is their Tardis ability, allowing them to store and throw countless amounts of offensive matter; but unlike all other Koopa species, Lakitus throw living creatures instead of inanimate objects.
Aethrinae
The most common forms of Lakitu, these creatures mainly form symbiotic relationships with Spinies, which they throw as eggs. Also, most utilize magical clouds to fly.
Aethra
- Lakitu - A. caeruleus - The poster species of AETHRIDAE, Lakitu is one of the most versatile Koopa species. They wear goggles so their eyes don't water from harsh winds generated by fast flying, and their shells have developed strange ring patterns. Another difference between Lakitus and their like-shelled Clubba ancestors is that most Lakitu only have small amounts of hair (though many retain larger clumps). There are many races of Lakitu, all of which can live on magic floating clouds and throw countless Spiny Eggs to attack their enemies. Some Lakitu only do this, though most have some sort of specialty, as listed below:
- Fishin' Lakitu - The most common race of Lakitu uses a Fishing Rod baited with a 1-Up Mushroom to lure enemies near their clouds. Once the bait is taken the rod is withdrawn and Spinies are thrown. The Fishing Rod can also be used to hook enemies, supprt various objects, or to simply fish.
- Aqua Lakitu - A race of Lakitu that lives under water with the aid of scuba gear, coming to the surface to breathe and throw Spiny Eggs.
- Pipe Lakitu - Lakitus that hide in Warp Pipes to ambush enemies (still attacking with Spiny Eggs).
- Wall Lakitu - Lakitus that hide behind hills and other objects in order to throw Spiny Eggs in surprise-attacks.
- Calm Lakitu - A. c. sedatus - A subspecies of Lakitu that inhabits Vibe Island. It is associated with the Calm Vibe, encarnating the power by sleeping most of the time (not unlike the Clubbas).
- Dark Lakitu - A. c. aquilus - A subspecies of Lakitu that is darker in colour with red shells and that throw Sky Blue Pipes (curled up Sky-Blue Spinies).
- Thunder Lakitu - A. fulguralis - This species of Lakitu has a red shell (like Dark Lakitus) and tanned skin. Instead of throwing Spinies it shoots fire generated by a device in its cloud that harnesses the energy from the sun.
Thallinae
Thallus
- Lakipea - T. caeruleus - The Beanish Lakitus, Lakipea have a leaf-like appendage growing from their head, inhabit vine-covered clouds, and throw the Benanish variation of Spiny, Sharpea.
Peregrinae
Peregrinitas
- Lakitufo - P. caeruleus - Red-shelled Lakitus bioengineered by the Shroobs to possess strange extraterrestrial features, including antennae in place of hair. They ride UFOs instead of clouds and beam down Spiny Shroopas in lieu of Spinies. They can also jump off their UFOs and assult their enemies themselves with a screw attack.
MALLEUSIDAE
A family of Koopa that evolved from Sumo Bros., all of them can be toild by the "Bro". suffix of their names.
Malleusinae
The main subfamily of Hammer Bros., these Koopa specialize in Tardis magic allowing for inexhaustible amounts of projectile weapons to be summoned from subspace and thrown at enemies. Like Chargin' Chucks, Hammer Bros. wear helmets to protect their heads.
Malleusini
The smaller and slenderer tribe of Hammer Bros.
Malleus
The genus characterized by their yellow beak-like snouts.
- Hammer Bro. - M. malleus - The definitive species of MALLEUSIDAE, Hammer Bros. throw countless hammers to attack their enemies, though certain individuals and specialized races within the species utilize other weaponry.
- Boomerang Bro. - A race of Hammer Bro. that throw boomerangs instead of hammers. There are two distinct species known as Hammer Bros. as well: one, M. recursus is identical to this race except for possessing green skin; and another, F. procerus is native to the Beanbean Kingdom and has various anatomical differences to the other synonymous breeds. This race and M. recursus used to be considered closely related enough to be called one species, while the Beanish Boomerang Bro. is a result of careless taxonomy; political difficulties have prevented the renaming of the two species (the race will be the one that retains the moniker Boomerang Bro.).
- Calm Hammer Bro. - M. m. sedatus - A subspecies of Hammer Bro. resident on Vibe Island, where it sleeps extensively as a result of the Calm Vibe, slowly increasing the velocity of its hammer-throwing the longer it attacks when awake.
- Dark Hammer Bro. - M. m. umbra - A black, featureless, shadow-subspecies of Hammer Bro. found only in the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials.
- Dark Boomerang Bro. - A race of Dark Hammer Bro. that throws boomerangs. There was some confusion on whether or not the creatures should be given their own designation as a separate sub-species; but as their relationship to M. m. umbra is identical to the Boomerang Bro. to M. malleus, it was decided that Dark Boomerang Bros. merited the same handling and were designated as a race differentiating in behavior only from the parent (sub)species.
- Boomerang Bro. - M. recursus - A species of green-skinned Hammer Bro. that throws Boomerangs instead of hammers. It is native to isolated regions of Desert Land (a.k.a. Dry Dry Desert) of the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Fire Bro. - M. ignipotens - A unique species of Hammer Bro. that spits fireballs (an ability drawn from its Dragon-Koopa roots) instead of throwing projectiles to attack.
- Dark Fire Bro. - M. i. umbra - The shadow-subspecies of Fire Bro. native to the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials.
Funiculus
- Boomerang Bro. - F. procerus - A tall, skinny Beanish variant of the normal Boomerang Bro. They do not wear helmets, exposing their domed purple heads (the same colour as their shells) and the sprouts that grow on them. F. procerus wears sunglasses to protect their eyes against the bright sunlight in their Gwarhar Lagoon residency (not because of Magikoopa's Blindness).
Caelumini
This tribe of Hammer Bro. is often likened to Lakitus as its members are snoutless and most inhabit the air, riding platforms of flying blocks instead of clouds. However they are still identifiable as Hammer Bros. as they throw innumerable amounts of hammers at their opponents to attack.
Caeruleus
- Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro. - C. malleus - Blue Hammer Bros. with white bellies and no discernable scales that sit on winged platforms that allow them to rain mallets on enemies from above. Since their perches do the moving, C. malleus tends to be overweight, looking quite bottom-heavy squatting on their red-shoed feet.
- Calm Amazing Flyin' Hammer Bro. - C. m. sedatus - A subspecies of C. malleus found on Vibe Island where it sleeps peacefully most of the time.
- Sledge Bro. - C. suggrandis - A large species of Hammer Bro. that utilizes ground-pounding to freeze enemies and make them easier targets to hit with the sledge hammers they throw. Most are yellow-skinned but an isolated race on Big Island developed green skin.
Virescinae
A subfamily of Hammer Bros. that branched off from Sumo Bros. inhabiting the Beanbean Kingdom.
Virescini
The earliest members of Virescinae were girthy like Sumo Bros. and do not throw hammers to attack theor enemies.
Reclino
- Limbo Bro. - R. taedifera - Like Sledge Bros., this species comes in both green and yellow-skinned races. They do not have developed Tardis abilities and cannot throw hammers, instead they carry torches and charge at enemies to attack. However they retain fire abilities from Sumo Bros.: fire attacks done on Limbo bros. heal them.
Caninus
- Chomp Bro. - C. erus - Hammer Bros. that formed a symbiotic relationship with Chain-Chomps: they care for the beasts and in turn are protected. They generally hold onto the Chain-Chomps' chains, resulting in highly developed upper bodies. Despite their girth, Chomp Bros. are defenseless and vulnerable when separated from their pets, and will show their cowardly nature, often times fleeing from assailants.
Defectini
A later tribe of Beanish Hammer Bros. that evolved to be smaller and lankier than any other species in the family.
Defectio
- Yo Bro. - D. rebellatrix - Small Koopas that branched off from Chomp Bros., replacing their Chain-Chomps with Yo-yos, resulting in a lack of muscular development in their long arms. Yo Bros. resemble Magikoopas in that they wear external clothes, including sunglasses; though there is no biological reason for this. Like Chomp-Bros., D. rebellatrix possesses bright green scales on their skin.
CIMEXIDAE
Small Koopas that evolved from Boom Booms.
Clavinae
The first Cimexidaetes, set apart from their descendants by the retention of spikes on their shells.
Clavini
Unspecialized creatures, the only prominent magical ability retained from their Dragon Koopa ancestors are their ability to climb up vertical walls an upside down, though member of the Calva genus do not tend to utilize this ability as it drains too much energy (members of Clavus are smaller and use up less power defying gravity).
Calva
The only Cimexidaetes that are solely bipedal.
- Spikey - Calva clavus - This rare species walks on two legs and possesses no discernable snout. In an attempt to protect their egg-shaped heads, members of this species wear round helmets.
- Spikester - A green-skinned race of Spikey that associates with Lakitus (being carried and dropped by them). They are stronger than Spikeys.
- Oerlikon - C. c. aquilus - The purple-skinned Spikesters are the most powerful morph of the species; they live inside volcanoes and are quite voracious.
Clavus
Spinies and their close relatives are the archetypal Clavinaetes.
- Spiny - C. cantharis
- Dark Spiny - C. c. umbra
- Ice Spiny - C. c. nivalis
- Sad Spiny - C. c. maestus
- Sky-Blue Spiny - C. c. caerulus
- Winged Spiny - C. volutus - A rare breed of flying Spiny evolved from the Sky-Blue race; they are generally known to the general population only because of their vacant shells. Unlike certain species of Koopas, Winged Spinies can not live without their shells, and the empty carapaces are a product of Spiny hunting: the creatures are killed and spells are used to manipulate the unstable energy held within the carapace. This is done to many species of non-anthropomorphic Koopas, with different species being used for different items; however, Winged Spinies were a historically rare breed, and are now critically endangered as a result of the practice.
Granini
Grani
- Sharpea - G. clavus - Light brown, bulbous Spinies that evolved in the Beanbean Kingdom. They coexist with Lakipeas and their green skies are less pointed than normal Spinies.
Ranini
Rana
- Spiny Shroopa - R. clavus - A Calvanate bioengineered by the Shroobs so that it's head is always within its shell with only its eyes visible in the shadow; long hind legs used for hopping about; and long-fingered hands.
Cantharinae
Cimexidaetes that have lost the spikes from their shells.
