Shadows are a species of characters that made their debut in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. They are purple, humanoid shadow creatures with elemental powers and the ability to sink through the shadows as a means of hiding or teleportation. The Shadow Sirens and the Shadow Queen are the only members seen in the game, making it possible that they are the last of their species.

[edit] Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Beldam, Marilyn, and Vivian (who was later replaced with Doopliss, since she ended up joining Mario's party) worked with the Secret Society of X-Nauts and their leader, Sir Grodus to find the seven Crystal Stars and use them to break the seal on the Thousand-Year Door and release the Shadow Queen. Grodus' intention was to use her power to destroy the world, remake it in his own image, and become its ruler. However, the Shadow Sirens, as well as the Shadow Queen herself, had other plans.

In Super Paper Mario, their role was reduced to a mere cameo appearance. The player can obtain Vivian's Catch Card by completing the Duel of 100 at Sammer's Kingdom. Beldam and Marilyn, on the other hand, didn't appear in the game at all. They were, however, mentioned in Vivian's Catch Card description.

- Although it may be a coincidence, the Red Magiblots from Super Paper Mario and other color variations of them have similarities to the Shadow species.
