Bowser is up to his old tricks again, so Luigi and I are going on another adventure. You're welcome to come along. This time it's Super Mario Bros. 3, the latest in the Super Mario Brothers series. You'll experience lots of excitement as your journey unfolds. For beginners and seasoned veterans of our previous games, this one is going to be a lot of fun!"

[edit] Super Mario World
Super Mario World takes place soon after the events of Super Mario Bros. 3. Because of the difficult journeys in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool decided they needed to take a vacation, and chose Dinosaur Land as the place to relax. From the U.S. instruction booklet (page 2): "After saving the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser and the rest of the Koopas in Super Mario 3, Mario and Luigi needed to recuperate from their adventures. Together they agreed that the best place to vacation was a magical place called Dinosaur Land."
Additionally, the Sunken Ghost Ship in the game is also one of the airships from Super Mario Bros. 3. From the U.S. instruction booklet (page 20): "This is a strange looking sunken ship. Haven't you seen it somewhere before? That's right, in Super Mario Bros. 3, Koopa and his kids used a flying ship to make life tough for Mario."

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins takes place soon after the events of Super Mario Land. During the events of Super Mario Land, Wario secretly took over Mario Land and Mario's Castle, which Mario discovered upon his return from Sarasa Land. From the U.S. instruction booklet, as narrated by Mario (page 3): "While I was away crusading against the mystery alien Tatanga in Sarasa Land, an evil creep took over my castle and put the people of Mario Land under his control with a magic spell. This intruder goes by the name of Wario."

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 takes place some unknown amount of time after Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. After Wario's attempt to take Mario's castle was thwarted, Wario set out to get a castle of his own. From the U.S. instruction booklet (page 3): "Remember Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins? Wario tried to take over Mario's castle, but didn't have much luck. Wario, being the persistent guy he is, has not given up. Now, he wants a castle more than ever before."

[edit] Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country takes place some unknown amount of time after the three original Donkey Kong arcade games, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3, when Cranky Kong was in his youth. There are several references to Cranky Kong being the original Donkey Kong from the arcade series. From the U.S. instruction manual (page 6): "In his heyday, Cranky was the original Donkey Kong who battled Mario in several of his own games." Another, more detailed reference, occurs in the Kong Family profile for Cranky Kong (page 27): "Donkey Kong's grouchy pappy is actually the original Donkey Kong who starred in the many Donkey Kong arcade classics of the eighties. He considers those games the pinnacle of game design, and will have nothing to do with the newfangled graphics, sound and multiple-button controllers of today's Nintendo mega-hits."

[edit] Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island depicts the first events of the Mario series, as the game begins on the morning the Mario Bros. were born. From the U.S. instruction booklet (pages 2-4): "This story happened a long long time ago...This is a story about a baby and Yoshi...A stork hurries across the dusky, pre-dawn sky. In his bill, he supports a pair of twins, who are to be delivered to their parents as soon as possible [...Kamek captures Baby Luigi from the Stork...] The kidnapper is Kamek, an evil Magikoopa from the Koopa Kingdom. Having divined last night that twin babies born this morning will bring disaster to the Koopa family, he arranged for an early morning ambush."

[edit] Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest takes place some unknown amount of time after the events of Donkey Kong Country. After Donkey Kong reclaimed his Banana Hoard from the Kremling Krew, Kaptain K. Rool got his revenge by kidnapping the heroic Kong, forcing Diddy Kong to begin a quest in search of his mentor. From the U.S. instruction manual's story, the Kong Family discusses who should go out and try to rescue Donkey Kong (page 5): "'What about me?!' asked Diddy, stamping his foot. 'I went with Donkey on his last adventure! Why can't I do it?!'"
The instruction manual also makes a reference to the original Donkey Kong arcade game, which occurs some unknown amount of time before the Donkey Kong Country series when Cranky Kong was in his youth. From the instruction manual, as Cranky lectures Donkey Kong (page 4): "'Even stars get time off,' muttered Donkey Kong, rubbing his head. 'I never did,' said Cranky proudly. 'Whisking off maidens and throwing barrels around the place seven days a week, I was. That's how I got where I am today, you know. Hard work. None of this lazing around on the beach.'"

[edit] Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! takes place some number of months after the events of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. After Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong rescued Donkey Kong from the Kremling Krew, the Kremlings struck back some months later, kidnapping Diddy and Donkey Kong, forcing Dixie Kong to rescue them. According to the U.S. instruction manual (page 4): "Months after their victory against King K. Rool and his army of baddies, the Kongs were still celebrating. Soaking up the sun in their favorite glade on DK Island, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong often slung up hammocks, hit the music and spent the day chilling out with banana milkshakes. If she couldn't think of anything better to do, Dixie Kong sometimes joined them. This morning though, Dixie was surprised to find Didy's room deserted."

[edit] Yoshi's Story
Yoshi's Story occurs some unknown amount of time after the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island when Bowser is still a baby. After rescuing Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, the Yoshis and their island is once again attacked by Baby Bowser, who transforms the island into a storybook. The game comes after Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island because Baby Bowser makes a comment about Mario during the final battle of Yoshi's Story, referencing the previous final battle of Super Mario World 2 (as well as the fact that Mario was born immediately prior to the events of SMW2). Baby Bowser says to Yoshi at the end of the game: "What have we here? Mario's little pet! I have pets too! Let's all play together."

[edit] Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Sunshine occurs some unknown amount of time after the events of Super Mario 64, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. based on the historical data in F.L.U.D.D.'s computer analysis of Mario. When Mario first meets F.L.U.D.D. on Isle Delfino, the advanced device registers Mario's "customer information." F.L.U.D.D. identifies Mario as the Mario of the Mushroom Kingdom, and displays archival footage of Mario's past adventures, starting with Super Mario Bros., to Super Mario World and finally to Super Mario 64.

[edit] New Super Mario Bros.
New Super Mario Bros. occurs some unknown amount of time after after Super Mario Sunshine. The instruction booklet makes a reference to Bowser Jr. once believing Princess Peach was his mother, which Bowser told his son in Super Mario Sunshine, and he later revealed to be false. From the U.S. instruction booklet (page 10): "Who's behind Princess Peach's disappearance? Who's behind the attack on Peach's Castle? Are the two incidents related? Didn't Bowser Jr. once think Princess Peach might be his mother?"

[edit] Yoshi's Island DS
Yoshi's Island DS occurs some unknown amount of time after the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island when Mario and Luigi are still babies. In the previous game, Yoshi rescued Baby Mario and Baby Luigi from Kamek and returned peace to Yoshi's Island, that is until a strange castle appeared over the island and babies started being kidnapped from all over the world. From the introductory cutscene (which features a montage of images from Super Mario World 2): "A long time ago, the Yoshis embarked on an adventure to rescue Baby Luigi from the clutches of Kamek, the villainous Magikoopa. They battled villains large and small on their quest. Thanks to the Yoshis' bravery, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and the entire island were saved from danger. Once again, peace reigned on Yoshi's Island. Until one day...(which leads to a cutscene showing the beginning of the game's events)."
