Lantern Ghost Grotto is the fifth level of World 2 found in Yoshi's New Island. This level's playable Yoshi is the purple Yoshi, and introduces Lantern Ghosts and Fangs. It also heavily features the purple Yoshi ground-pounding through breakable blocks to access the cave portion, as well as dodging various spinners in the cave portion.
Layout[edit]
Purple Yoshi starts the level in a grassy area with some breakable blocks nearby that he needs to ground pound through, which takes it through a downward tunnel area that has some Lantern Ghosts wandering around. On the way down, there are two paths to choose, one which has Lantern Ghosts while another has coins and Red Coins hidden among them. A left passage with coins contains a hidden Winged Cloud that spawns stars. Purple Yoshi then encounters a locked door, in which it must ground pound breakable blocks to cause it to fall to a nearby door. The key to the door is contained in a crate to the left; Purple Yoshi can access the crate by breaking the breakable blocks above it and then ground pounding the crate. To the right is a solid Rock Block that contains a Lantern Ghost and a Winged Cloud that provides Purple Yoshi with stars when hit.
After entering the door and propelling up with a Spring Ball with some Donut Blocks while avoiding Spinners operated by Boo Guys, Purple Yoshi encounters a Checkpoint Ring. Shortly afterward, there is a hidden Winged Cloud that reveals a locked door, in which Purple Yoshi needs to navigate through the level to obtain a key. After going up Spring Balls, there is an Egg Plant that spawns eggs for Purple Yoshi. To the right is a Spinner with a Winged Cloud that reveals the level's third Smiley Flower and some coins. Near that Smiley Flower is Donut Blocks that can take Purple Yoshi down to a Warp Pipe that leads to a bonus room containing crates and coins. To the far right are Fangs and a Winged Cloud that reveals a key upon activation. To the left of the Egg Plant is a passage that leads to the area's locked door and a hidden Winged Cloud that reveals a Smiley Flower upon getting hit.
The locked door takes Purple Yoshi outside, where it needs to navigate Spring Balls up and down, following trails of coins, ending with the Goal Ring.
Smiley Flowers[edit]
Smiley Flower 1: Just above the Egg Block right at the beginning of the level.
Smiley Flower 2: Hovering over the left area after Purple Yoshi initially ground pounds through. Purple Yoshi can access it by breaking the breakable blocks above it.
Smiley Flower 3: To the left area of a Spinner after the Egg Plant. Purple Yoshi needs to reveal it by hitting a Winged Cloud, then using Donut Blocks to descend and run to collect it while avoiding the spinner.
Smiley Flower 4: In a hidden Winged Cloud above an arrow side to the upper left area of the cave.
Smiley Flower 5: In the last area of the game where Purple Yoshi needs to navigate the level with Spring Balls and descend to collect it.
